  • Remembering Bill Nelson, His Stories & His Horseshoe Playing

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 25, 2022

Good morning, here we are in the last week of August. Boy has the summer flown by. We still have some great weather in store for us, but school and schedules sometimes are a bummer. Besides regular school, Flowerfield will be beginning in a few short weeks. However, here is a little bit of what is happening in our neighborhood. This afternoon, Thursday, August 25th. at 1:30 p.m., the Lied Library in Scottsbluff is hosting a book signing and discussion over Nebraska author Jonis Agee’s award winning book “The Bones of Paradise.” This is about...

  • It's Opening Day At Banner County School

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 18, 2022

Good morning, Banner County. With a little rain over the weekend, Monday morning started out cloudy and cool. Kimball received over an inch and since it was fair time that came as no surprise to me. Seemed to happen on schedule when our kids were all involved. Speaking of kids, school starts here – Today, Thursday, August 18th! Grades K-12 will be loading up and some will be walking, so be aware. Bands on Bordeaux will still take place that evening in Chardon from 6-9 p.m. at Railroad Park, but I think Bands on Broadway is finished for the seas...

  • Here's To A Week Of County Fairs

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 11, 2022

Good morning! And here is to a week of county fairs and balloons in the air! Hot again, but not quite into the three digits. The Old West Balloon Fest started yesterday, August 10th, with a night glow out at WNCC and they continue Friday and Saturday with mass ascension events both days, 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Mitchell airfield. On the 13th there will also be a craft fair and cornhole tournament in downtown Mitchell. The evening of the 13th the ballooners will finish up with a night glow at...

  • Grateful For Volunteers Fighting Wildfires

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 4, 2022

Good morning, back here in a heat wave. Still not as hot as it was, and people in Texas or Missouri have the heat plus the humidity, so there is that. With a few rain showers that are hit and miss, it was really no surprise that the lightning carrying on Saturday evening started quite a fire just north of us once again. Several small fires, really. At this time (July 31), it is still going and I do not know the full extent of the damages. However, I sympathize with those who have suffered loss of any kind and want to express our gratitude to...

  • 'Tis The Season For Christmas Music?

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 28, 2022

Good morning! here we are at the end of July. Wow, with only August left it sees like this summer has simply flown by. I want it to last for about three more months, but know that won’t happen. We still have time for the lake, barbecues, gardens and music in the streets. Bands on Broadway will feature “Avid Discord” and Kris Lager tonight, July 28th, in the 18th Street Plaza from 6-9 p.m., while at Chadron they will have Bands on Bordeaux, same time, in the Railroad Park. The Western Arts Center will have a new show with the opening of the 2...

  • Hotter Than A Hootchie-Cootchie

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 21, 2022

Good morning, sure is hotter than a hootchie-cootchie, right?! Take care out there. Tonight, July 21st, Bands on Broadway are at the 18th Street Plaza from 6-9 p.m., and in Chadron Bands on Bordeaux will be there at the same time frame at Railroad Park. Tomorrow there will be another presentation of the "Emigrant Experience" out at the Scottsbluff National Monument. The ranger will be on hand from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Not long ago we had the pleasure of taking our grandson on a hike down...

  • The Heat Is On; Harvest Is Happening

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 14, 2022

Good morning, wheat harvest is happening in Banner and Kimball counties, and others I am sure. Still green in places but it won’t be long. I heard on the radio that over the weekend the weather temperature highs were well into the three digits with 111 degrees reported in McCook. As much as I love the hot weather I do have to admit, that is too much for me! It was cooler on Monday, but then it’s back up into the 90s for quite some time to come. Good harvest weather. We start this week with music. The Bands on Broadway series will present the...

  • Summer Heating Up & Flying By

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 7, 2022

Good morning, here is hoping you had a great 4th of July. Sure was hot enough. We will start this week off with the Bands on Broadway series featuring Gabriel the Brute, and the 43rd Army Band. • Before The Harvest, Time For Some June & July Fun

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 30, 2022

Good morning, and here we are in the last week of June. The summer season has just arrived and is slipping away way to fast. I know of some harvest crews that are moving in around the Kimball area, so here before long we will see them here. The wheat close by is really green, so it may be awhile. In the valley, finishing out the month of June on Thursday the 30th, the Free movie which is offered by the Midwest Theater is "Puss N Boots" at 1:30 p.m. and the doors open at 12:45 p.m. That evening Bands on Broadway will take place at the 18th...

  • These Are The Days For Wind, Summer Fun

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 23, 2022

Good morning! Well, wind is the word of the day. Took one of our stock tanks and folded it up like a taco shell. Not to mention sucking all moisture out of everything. So, let’s have a calmer week! Today, June 23rd, if you or anyone you know might be interested in gaining information about any military service or academy and the opportunities they have, there will be an informative session from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the Third District Service Academy Open House at the Leid Library in Scottsbluff. If you have more questions, please call Congr...

  • Looking At Memorial Day Weekend

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 26, 2022

Good morning, Harrisburg, friends and family near and far. May is going out the door and June is slipping in. I sure don’t know where the time has gone. I know for certain that for me it is not because I am having a good time. We are looking at Memorial Day this weekend. Our loved ones will be remembered, specifically missed every day. However there will also be picnics, BBQs, and special family/friend gatherings, so safe travel to all. Remember this quote by Helen Keller “ Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.” The River...

  • School's Out For Summer, Starting Today

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 19, 2022

Good morning ! Here we are well into the end of May. School is Out for the summer, whoo-hoo. Our school year will end today. The class of 2022 graduated last Saturday and I think there were 10 classmates. As always though there are a few loose ends to tie up, one of those is state track which will take place on the 19th & 20th. Plus that, some music students will head to Denver for the annual trip to Elitches on Saturday, May 21st. Finally, about four students are scheduled to attend the HPP...

  • Graduation Time & More In The Burg

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 5, 2022

Well here we are in in Merry Month of May, Happy May Day to you! Time is sure flying and I for one am not having that much fun. On a personal level it is sometimes a steep climb, and there is a lot of confusion and disappointment in our daily lives brought on by the continuing dysfunction of the world we live in. Soon summer will be here and I am hoping to see more sun, literally. School is drawing to a close for this year for us here in Harrisburg. Graduation for the pre-K and kindergarten class (the future class of 2035, if I counted right)...

  • Boy, Do We Need Some Rain

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 14, 2022

Good morning Harrisburg, friends and family near and far. Here we are in the middle of April already, and boy do we need some rain. We faced many local fires all past summer and our fire department has currently been helping at the Arapahoe fire. It is so dry everywhere and these winds aren’t helping any either as I know you all are aware. Here in the Burg at the schoolhouse, track is in full swing with the high school teams heading to Burns today, April 14th. The meet begins at 9 a.m. There is NO school today for the students, other than those...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 31, 2022

Good morning, Banner County. Here we are on the last day of March, and where did it go? Heaven sure knows that the time is flying, but I for one am not having that much fun. However, life marches on. Pardon the pun. I don't know if any of you were able to attend the Dairyland Donkey Ball game last Monday evening, but it was great entertainment and I thank the Kimball Ranch Rodeo and the participates and sponsors. The Banner County Wrecking Crew gave it their best but lost their first match so...

  • Here Comes The Banner County Wrecking Crew!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 24, 2022

Well good morning Banner County, friends near and far. I hope this morning finds you somewhere nice, warm and windless. After a lifetime in Nebraska I am accustomed to the ups and downs of our weather, but I still don’t like it. Last weekend two important events happened that I completely forgot about. Not to mention my not mentioning the time change recently. Anyway, last Sunday, the 20th of March was the Spring Equinox and then the 21-22nd was Maslenitsa or Komodety- the day of the vernal equinox (when the day and night are equal in time ). D...

  • It's Time, Daylight Time, For Some Banner County News

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 17, 2022

Happy St. Paddys Day and good morning Banner County! Here is hoping that you all are in the right time zone this morning. I would have sent a reminder in last week’s paper but I forgot, so there you go. If it wasn’t for someone else mentioning it late Saturday night, I am pretty sure I would not have remembered until Sunday morning when I was late and off kilter. This change doesn’t come easy either, it will take me several weeks to adjust. Hope it works out better for you. You also need to be wearing that “green” today, and there will prob...

  • Hoping For A Fire-Free Week

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 23, 2021

Good morning! I sincerely hope this week is fire-free. The fire that was in Scottsbluff County last week caused more damage and more smokey air for us to breathe. We are several miles away and yet Thursday evening from our deck we could see a huge orange glow that didn’t seem all that far away. Our thanks to our local firefighters that is for sure, plus many others. They sure have been busy this summer. This coming weekend will be a busy one, too. Here at home the annual Farmers Day celebration in Kimball will be held the 24-26. This year is t...

  • Wrapping Things Up Before Winter Sets In

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 16, 2021

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Well here we are in the middle of September and still some mighty hot days. Beans are being harvested though, so it won’t be long before it will be time for corn and beets. Wrapping things up before winter sets in. We have a few more weeks of activity before the holiday seasons are upon us, although Christmas trees and decorations are out already in some stores. Personally, I am in summer mode for as long as possible! Saturday, September 18th is a busy day with the farmers market in full s...
