  • It's Time To Watch The Flowers Grow-Banner County

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 25, 2021

Well good morning Banner County, friends and neighbors! Much better looking out this window this week. We still have snow but the the extreme cold has moved on and early Monday morning the March winds were helping to finish off the month of February. Did that month seem to fly for anyone but me? Can’t say that I am sorry since I am ready for spring! Ready to say “Goodbye winter, so long snow, it’s time to watch the flowers grow!” We are not quite there, but getting closer. The Westco Storm baseball tryouts will take place February 26-28th...

  • I Cannot Tell A Lie About The Cold in Banner County

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 18, 2021

Good morning ! Baby it’s cold outside! The weather is definitely of the utmost importance to most all of us right now. As well as it should be. I don’t know if anyone has started calving yet, but I sure hope not, as it is supposed to gradually start warming up. Not 50/60 degrees like a few weeks ago, but no single digits either. Monday we saw the wind join the cold and more than one road was blocked due to drifting. Our school had no school scheduled, which was a good thing and there were many others with a late start or cancellation. Oth...

  • Add Love, Subtract Hate

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 11, 2021

Good morning, and what a cold one it is! While we have, it is nothing compared to some areas surrounding us. Just the cold. The kids up here at the school will be doing a little traveling in it, too. Today, Thursday February 11th, the junior high basketball boys MAC tournament gets under way at Creek Valley and will continue on Saturday the 13th if they qualify. Also on the 11th the elementary kids will be having Valentine’s parties, which will begin at 3 p.m. The real parties will begin on Friday the 12th because there is NO School! No school...

  • Lots Of Cancellations, But Banner Students Plenty Busy

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 28, 2021

Good morning friends and neighbors! Little snow this past weekend to finish off January, I guess. Sure was cold at the beginning of this week. There are more event cancellations than there are events. One that is hanging in there is the dog wash that is conducted by vet students at EWC in Torrington. That is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 30th from 8 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.. Your fur babies must have current rabies shots and you may go to the north entrance of the Veterinary Technology building for services. For more information p...

  • Banner County Students Will Leave You Spellbound (Jan. 28)

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 21, 2021

Good morning Banner County! Did half of Wyoming blow your way this past week? We sure did have a few days (and nights ) of nonstop high winds didn’t we? It was just extra cold and a big annoyance at our house, but I know there was a lot of serious, costly damage in some areas. This week the weather looks much better. Looking on the calendar, most everything is either canceled at this point on the social scale. However the sports schedule at Banner County School is still on track and here it is: Friday, January 22nd the high school wrestling t...

However, for our students traveling for sports or other school competitions, it has been especially nice. As usual, they are on the move. Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 7, 2021

Well here we go again, hopefully a better New Year! School here resumed Tuesday, January 5th. For myself it was nice to have the days a little bit more scheduled for our senior, but not quite as nice for the husband that went off of vacation. As far as school goes I feel like we are on the downside slide now, hallelujah! School resumed here Tuesday, January 5th, and they will be in regular session this Friday, the 8th. The high school wrestlers will travel to Garden County Saturday, January 9th for matches beginning at 9 a.m. Safe travel and...

  • Banner County Writer Says The Grinch Influences My Sister & Was Spotted On Street Corner

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 10, 2020

Good morning Banner County! You know how some days or weeks seem to drag and at other times they seem to fly by? Well this week was a fly-by one for me. It seemed like I went from Monday to Saturday. Boom. I am thinking that this one is going to be pretty much the same. All that hustle and bustle that this season brings. My one sister is having a hard time not being a grinch this year. Says with no snow she just can’t get in the mood. I felt that way last year, but in spite of the beautiful weather that we are having, I have been ready for t...

  • Banner County Residents Expecting Changes This Holiday Season

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 3, 2020

Good morning Banner County, neighbors near and far. Here we are in December, and I am wondering after spending months and months and many holiday celebrations in very uncustomary ways how many December customs will be altered or cancelled. Christmas is at our doorstep! There will be changes and restrictions I am pretty sure. But if we look at what we have in our lives we will have more than if we look at what we don’t have in our lives and never have enough. I am trying really hard to remember that as we finish this year. Here is what is h...

  • Big Fine For Killing Big Horn Sheep

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Nov 26, 2020

Good morning. Here is hoping that you all will be stuffed with turkey and all sorts of goodies over the Thanksgiving weekend! The weather is decent and thankfully we still are able to move about at a fairly normal pace. More and more restrictions are being put into place and I am wondering how this year is going to end. Still no officially elected President. However, we will hang in there! Many area schools have gone ahead and closed school for all of this week, giving two more days for recuperation for those in need. Our churches here are...

  • Time For Some Food, Folks, Fun in Banner County... And Especially Thanks

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Nov 19, 2020

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far. Here is a little bit of news, a few notes, and a little nonsense. Pretty slow around here. Tomorrow, Friday, November 20th, is the deadline for applications for the Conservation Stewardship program. You need to call your local NRCS offices for more information. • Impact Of COVID Felt In Banner, Surrounding Counties

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Nov 12, 2020

Good morning Banner County! Here is hoping that you all have been enjoying this great weather. I sure have, crunchy leaves underfoot and all! There was a little bit of a setback Monday morning waking up to snow, however, not much to grumble about considering this is November. November typically means the annual Fall Harvest Supper at the Harrisburg Community Church and this past Sunday folks who attended had a great time with fellowship coupled with great food and entertainment. Grant Robbins entertained us with fantastic banjo music...

  • Not Time Yet To Comment On Banner County Elections

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Nov 5, 2020

Good morning, beautiful this week. Quite an important week for all of us, elections! This little letter will come to you before I know any election results, so I must refrain from any comments until later. Not everyone can be happy whatever those results may be. However, I hope that we all have voted and that we persevere. We do have several cases of COVID in the school system, not necessarily in the county. It seems to be more local this time, here and surrounding counties. Halloween came and went and we had the most beautiful full moon that...

  • Greetings From Banner County Winter Wonderland

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 29, 2020

Good morning Banner County! I don’t care what part of the county you live in, I am betting that you awoke to a winter wonderland on Monday morning! We had at least a foot here. All I can say is that I am thankful for the moisture and that the smell of wood burning is great. Chicken and noodles, chili, and vegetable soup. The spooktacular planned for this past Sunday was cancelled as were many other expected events. Some schools had a late start while here we had school cancelled for Monday. If you haven’t heard we have a student tested pos...

  • What!? 10 Fridays Till Christmas!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 22, 2020

Good morning! Here we are in the last week of October! My how the time is flying, rather we are having fun or not. Someone said “only 10 more Fridays until Christmas “and I thought, hold on wait a minute, did I miss Halloween and Thanksgiving? Time is moving fast enough, let’s not move it any faster! There is very little going on here in the Burg this week. However, there will be state cross country competition on the 23rd, Friday, and on that same date HS JV volleyball at home verses Sioux County at 5 p.m. and football at 7 p.m. Friday will...

  • Wind Blows Through, Life Carries On In Banner County

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 15, 2020

Good Morning and Happy Fall y’all! I have had my doubts as to what season we were in here this past month or so, but it blew in this past weekend for sure. Wow, the wind we had here this past Sunday was outrageous. Needless to say the horseshoe tournament with the Harrisburg Community Church was postponed until another time. Thank goodness it died down that evening and the sun shined bright and beautiful Monday morning. In the valley the Spooktacular continues out at the Riverside Discovery Center and they are planning on moving Smokey and B...

  • Banner County Homecoming This Friday

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Oct 8, 2020

Good morning everyone! Beautiful time of the year that is for sure. I love the fall season, but not the Halloween stuff quite so much. However, to each their own, right? Here at the school house there will be NO School ... one day only! That would be Friday, October 9th, the day after parent-teacher conferences. However, there will be a high school football game on that evening here at home beginning at 7 p.m. and against South Platte. Homecoming activities will take place on the field at 9 p.m. On the following day, Saturday, October 10th,...

  • Annual Banner School Book Fair Oct. 5-12

    Barb Cross, Observer Columnist|Oct 1, 2020

Good morning, Banner County friends near and far. Beautiful today, and for the first time in many days we have clear skies, no smoke! We are having a few cool days here and there, but the lawn mower and the pumpkins are still competing for first place in the scheme of life. Farmers markets are still open in a few places.Today, the 1st of October, they are in Torrington and on the 3rd & the 6th in Morrill. Other than that I think they are beginning to shut down. The 8th Harvest Moon festival in Chadron will take place all day at the Dawes County...

  • What? Christmas Items Being Sold In September!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 24, 2020

Hello there and good morning! Here is hoping that everyone had a great week and is ready for another one. While I am expecting the weather to change here before to long I find myself still mowing and watering the yard. Corn harvest has not started as of yet as far as I know, but the leaves are starting to change. I was over town one day last week and in one store there were fall/Halloween decorations like on two aisles and behind there were aisles with Christmas decorations. Ugh. Love Christmas, but not in September. Farmer’s Day is this w...

  • Banner County Looks At Farmer's Day Events In Kimball

    Barb Cross, Observer Columnist|Sep 17, 2020

Good morning! Beautiful summer day in store for us today. Maybe not tomorrow! I found this quote the other day: “ The leaves fall, the wind blows, and the farm country slowly changes from summer cottons into its winter wool.” – by Henry Beston. Says it all, right? One day at a time weather wise right now and football season! The Wildcats will play in Wauneta at 2 p.m. this Friday, September 18th at 2 p.m. Good luck and safe travel to everyone. The Farmers to Families program will also be available on the 18th at 8 a.m. Farmers markets will...

  • Seems Like Mother Nature Is Having A 2020 Year, Too in Banner County

    Barb Cross|Sep 10, 2020

Good morning everyone, friends near and far. Here is hoping that you all had a great weekend and that the cold front that moved in for a few days is not going to be our “new normal” for a while yet. I love the fall but hate the cold weather. I love to look at the snow but hate to be in it. I read the other day that so far September temperatures have reached and topped previous record highs. I believe it and 15/20 degrees cooler would be okay but this ole stuff of dropping almost 50 degrees from one day to the next is way too much. Seems lik...

  • Fighting Fire Was A Team Effort in Banner County

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 3, 2020

Good morning, Banner County! Wow, what a week. As you are aware many acres in the northeastern part of the county were on fire this past weekend. The fire south of Terry Brown and way too close to Floyd Hein burned about 4,000 acres at least. The fire is still under investigation. Many, many thanks to the local Banner County Fire Department volunteers who responded and to every other fire department that also came to help. There were many. Also thanks to the National Guard and the planes, which...
