  • Kimball Banner County Fair, New School Year Right Around The Corner

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 3, 2023

Holy Cow, August is here! The summer is sure flying for someone who is not having that much fun. Wheat harvest here in Banner County has looked pretty good, and in Scotts Bluff County, and Kimball, it has looked good at least in places. I recently road on a combine for a while and it sure was different than the last time I climbed those steps. There was no buddy seat and you had to drive. The cutting continues. Here at home, school starts soon, and the staff is due to be back on the 14th. So soon. There is a school board meeting on Monday, the...

  • Combines & Crews Try To Beat The Weather

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 27, 2023

Good morning! Harvest is getting underway, so please no more rain for just a little while. Although we all are so thankful for the rain, it sure would be nice to get a few of those crops in! More to follow soon, right? Combines and the crews with them have been putting in many long hours trying to beat the weather. Beginning this week, Thursday, July 27th three bands out of Colorado will play at the 18th Street Plaza between 6 - 9 p.m. Cory Pearman and Loop Story are both soft rock bands, and Float Like A Buffalo is a funk horn band. Not sure a... Full story

  • Trombonist Isaac Olsen Performs In Europe; Wyatt Reichenberg A Champ

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 20, 2023

Good morning! Well summer is definitely here and isn’t it grand? Hot weather, weeds and all, I sure would rather have the heat to complain about instead of the cold! One of my very best friends would not agree with me at all and I understand, but for now I am happy with the heat, maybe in a month or so I will not be so much! Before we get into all of the things going on this next week I would like to congratulate Isaac Olsen on his recent experience with the Nebraska Ambassadors of Music Band and Choir. This group of 185 band members and 150 c... Full story

  • Going Away BBQ For Pastor Bob On July 8

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jul 6, 2023

Good morning and here is hoping you had a blast on the 4th, celebrating our great country! I was with friends at the rodeo, something that my family has done for over 40 years, seldom missing an attendance on one night or the other. Many have been "doing" fireworks for several days and now that is over for another year, I am OK with that. We start off this week with lots of music in lots of different local areas. In Scottsbluff at the 18th Street Plaza the New Wave Machine and Loaded Dice will p...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jun 29, 2023

Good morning Banner County, friends near and far! As we all are aware, our weather situation has been pretty violent with destructive rain, wind hail and tornadoes. Several times all at once. (Editor's note: As it turned out, parts of this area endured a tornado watch and hail Monday night.) There are a lot of things in the works for Thursday, June 29th, so lets hope...

  • Circle June 3 On Your Calender For Historical Day

    Barb Cross, The Observer|May 25, 2023

Good morning! beautiful weather and lots of green, thanks to the rain. Here today I am sending off the last little news letter for the month of May and I can’t hardly believe it. Time is going way too fast when at the same time some days seem to go on forever. Anyway, school is out and baseball season is getting underway. I am trying to get my yard up to par and have transplanted a few trees and bushes. I will be potting more flowers because every year I get all excited and do it too early and they die before it really decides to stay warm. S... Full story

  • Getting Ready For Easter In The Burg

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Apr 6, 2023

Well, this week we are experiencing winter, spring, and quite possibly summer. Time will tell. I really have the urge to rake the yard and plant some tulips. Even the grass is trying to “green-up,” but there is still winter kill and snow. Bummer. Not much is going on in the Burg this week because we are getting ready for Easter. Last week, Palm Sunday services were conducted in many churches throughout our area, with Easter this week. The Harrisburg Community Church will have breakfast in place of Sunday school this week followed by Easter Sun...

  • Don't Know If Mother Nature Got The Memo, But It's Spring!

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 23, 2023

Good morning. I hope this finds you all doing well. St. Paddy’s Day is over and the first day of Spring was officially the 20th of March, a few short days ago. I don’t know if Mother Nature got the memo, so we will just leave it at that. The wind has been living up to its reputation for the month of March and kite flying – and making some of those beautiful days quite uncomfortable. There are a few events in the area that seem to be season related. The folks at the Knight Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance will be hosting a book signi... Full story

  • An Irish Prayer And More For St. Paddy's Day

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Mar 16, 2023

Good morning, here we are talking about the middle of March, seems unreal. Maybe at least in part because of the lingering snow. I am seeing some green grass and spots of green in the fields, so yeah!! Speaking of green, Happy St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th, tomorrow, Friday. Last week in my reminder of the upcoming commissioners meeting I had the right day but the wrong date and was told about it. So just to be sure, I’ll say it again: St. Paddy’s Day is this Friday, March 17th! In celebration of that day, the Leid Public Library in Scott...

  • Yep, We Have Mud & That Ole Groundhog, But We Will Carry On

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Feb 9, 2023

Good morning ! With sky high snow drifts in many areas and thankfully some melting snow and ice we have ... mud. Yep, we do. However I would rather have mud than drought, so I am trying to remember that. We just need to be careful and not get stuck or slide into the ditch, I know of several who have those issues just getting out of their yards. Well, the ole groundhog has predicted six more weeks of winter and that doesn’t surprise me, how about you? Through it all we will carry on. On Saturday night, February 11th, the Golden Halo Foundation w...
