  • Spelling Bee Jan. 26; County Commissioners Meeting Jan. 31

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 19, 2023

Hello! Here we are smack dab in the middle of January. Man is time ever flying, sometimes in a winter mode and sometimes not so much. There has been more ice and my driveway is still blocked. More moisture would be great and to my way of thinking if the ice would melt we would have more moisture! As you know the Dinner Theater and One Act Play was cancelled due to bad weather in December. However, they performed for the entire school one day last week, and if you were able to attend you know...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Jan 12, 2023

Good morning and here we are in the first month of a New Year. A New Year coming with challenges and changes, some of those which began here last week with the swearing in of newly elected county officials. An estimated 50 plus Banner County residents attended the ceremony and reception which also included a short meeting and district court. We all know that it will take a while for the new officials to get their feet on the ground. However, I for one know that it will happen, and we will be...

  • New Commissioners Take Office Jan. 5

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 29, 2022

Good morning, saying Goodbye to 2022 and Welcoming 2023. Wishing a Happy New Year to your house from me. This past year has seemed to fly by, especially the past three months. I have spoken with several people who feel this same way. Maybe this year life will settle down a little bit and calm down. That would be OK with me. However, at this point who knows? For all of you who wanted a white Christmas, we sure had that! I still am driving through a tunnel of snow in order to get to the house. During Christmas break one of the kids was riding a...

  • Blizzard Put A Stop To Everything, Everywhere

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 22, 2022

Good morning! This snow storm that we were hit with this final couple of weeks in 2022 sure put a stop to everything. I mean everything everywhere. We were completely snowed in from Tuesday morning through Saturday afternoon. Thanks to a good and helpful neighbor, we were finally able to get out late through the pasture. My driveway was full of snow the full length and width with drifts as high as the trees, and I have some pretty tall trees. Thankfully again, the county came to make a path...

Good morning, and a chilly one it is! Here in the Burg that is an appropriate comment for sure. Then on Tuesday the 13th of December the Entrepreneur Extravaganza...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Dec 1, 2022

Good morning Banner County. Here is hoping that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, survived Black Friday, and are ready for some much colder weather. Leftovers are always a plus. I don't do Black Friday, and I don't believe that I will ever be ready for cold weather no matter what season. So now we are getting ready for Christmas, guess I am OK with that. There were three Christmas parades this past weekend, and I missed them all. The plan was to go to one on Friday, but the plan was derailed....

  • Gearing Up For Election, Closing In On September

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 22, 2022

Good morning. While we are busy planting and working the fields, fighting fires and gearing up for the upcoming election we find ourselves closing in on September. I was in one of the stores in the Bluffs recently and as the aisles progressed from the front to the back we literally went through four seasons/holidays. Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Honestly, it is a bit overwhelming. Way too soon and working toward a burn out by the time for a particular season/holiday to get here. For now, I will just stick to what is going on in...

  • Remembering 9/11; Banner County Candidates Event Scheduled

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Sep 15, 2022

Good morning. Here we are in the middle of September with Labor Day and 9/11 behind us. Over this past weekend I heard a short remembrance speech about that awful day, September 11, 2001. I know we all remember exactly what we were doing at the moment we first heard the news. I had flashbacks of the 9/11 Memorial in Washington that we visited a few years ago and other destinations of destruction on that awful day. Does not seem that long ago. Movie wise, going back even further to 1986 Tom Cruise starred in “Top Gun .” Recently, after 36 yea...

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 18, 2022

Good morning, Banner County. With a little rain over the weekend, Monday morning started out cloudy and cool. Kimball received over an inch and since it was fair time that came as no surprise to me. Seemed to happen on schedule when our kids were all involved. Speaking of kids, school starts here – Today, Thursday, August 18th! Grades K-12 will be loading up and some will be walking, so be aware. Bands on Bordeaux will still take place that evening in Chardon from 6-9 p.m. at Railroad Park, but I think Bands on Broadway is finished for the seas...

  • Grateful For Volunteers Fighting Wildfires

    Barb Cross, The Observer|Aug 4, 2022

Good morning, back here in a heat wave. Still not as hot as it was, and people in Texas or Missouri have the heat plus the humidity, so there is that. With a few rain showers that are hit and miss, it was really no surprise that the lightning carrying on Saturday evening started quite a fire just north of us once again. Several small fires, really. At this time (July 31), it is still going and I do not know the full extent of the damages. However, I sympathize with those who have suffered loss of any kind and want to express our gratitude to...
