At that time, Sheriff Harry Gillway said, "We believe the suspects are driving the second vehicle stolen from Dix. We did...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Feb 23, 2017

Mike Daum is making big news again this week and if you haven’t already read, and watched some of the National news stories about his play this past week, you must be hiding out in a cave somewhere. Big Mike, the former Kimball High standout who is now outstanding for South Dakota State University, had a career high of 51 points in the Jackrabbits 97-89 win over Fort Wayne. This is the most points scored by a player in a game this year. He had seven treys and was 16/17 at the foul line. He also puled 15 rebounds and was outstanding enough to be...

  • Unlawful dumping = big costs

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 16, 2017

Disposing of unwanted items alongside county roads is a growing concern, is considered littering and is unlawful by Nebraska revised state statute 28-523. With hundreds of miles of county roads in Kimball County, unlawful dumping of debris along those roads can become a big problem. Anyone found guilty of this offense the first time will be found guilty of a Class III misdemeanor, punishable by up to three months in jail or a fine of up to $500, or both. A second offense will be a Class II...

At Hemingford, Kimball jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the Lady Bobcats came back to score the next 10 points to lead 12-5 at the quarter break. In the second quarter, the same story as Kimball scored the first 6...

  • No state contenders for Kimball wrestlers

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

No state tournament qualifiers this year for the Kimball High wrestling team despite some outstanding efforts by the Longhorn squad, according to coach Wade Brashear. "The NSAA C-4 District Tournament in Valentine turned out to be a great competitive tournament full of excitement and heart break," said Brashear. "Our goal was to wrestle our best matches at the end of the season and in some matches, we did just that, showing vast improvement from the beginning of the year. This district proved on...

The Kimball girls had a very good first half of play, trailing 19-14 at the quarter break with Justine Heeg nailing a pair of treys and Jannel Fiehtner hitting yet another, and Kate Reader scoring 5 points. • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

WOW! Hunter Thompson gave basketball fans a look at how a Division One recruit can play the game when his Pine Bluffs boy’s team invaded Kimball this past week and took home an 86-41 victory. It was their 42nd consecutive win by the way, as the Hornets remain undefeated this season at 18-0. The Pine team is fast closing in on the state record for the most consecutive wins in a row. Back to Mr. Thompson, the 6’10” senior who has signed to play at the University of Wyoming, and who had earlier committed to Creighton. In the first quarter alone...

  • MRSA - It's a big deal but it doesn't have to be

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 9, 2017

Though Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is serious, it doesn’t have to cause panic. In fact, the bacterial infection is not more contagious than others, it is simply resistant to many antibiotics, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Anyone can contract the highly resistant infection, but it is most commonly seen in those who are most often in group settings, such as patients in medical facilities, nursing homes, military barracks and even students and athletes. The infection can be spread from c...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Dan Dean

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 9, 2017

Just one short week on the job and Kimball's new City Administrator, Dan Dean, has jumped in feet first and with a broad smile described his first day, Wednesday, Feb. 1, as full of meetings. "I got right into the middle of things with some very long meetings for much of the day," he said. "That's just fine, just get right in and figure out what is going on." But don't expect to find him stuck behind his desk all the time, as Dean plans to be involved in community events and civic organizations...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 9, 2017

Just a few mornings ago I woke up still tired and groggy, sure that it was at least an hour before my usual wake up time. As I sat up in bed the tell-tale ache in my head and the stiffness in my neck screamed that my night was anything but restful. I swung my feet over the side of the bed and began slowly stretching my neck – touching chin to chest and circling it first one way, then the other. Then I saw it. My alarm clock. 6 a.m. I’m late! Understand, as an early riser, 6 a.m. is late for me, and it meant that I could not enjoy a cup of cof...

  • Withrow brothers to compete for the same team once again

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

Kimball senior, Jaden Withrow, signed his letter of intent this past week to play football for the Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers. This means there will be two Withrow brothers on the Tiger roster as Jaden joins once again with his brother Jonathan, who just completed his second season at DWU. Jaden is one of two recruits who were signed strictly as athletes, meaning they could be looked at for various positions and various roles in the program. When questioned about the possibility of...

  • Kimball wrestlers ready for District

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

The Longhorns had two tournaments this past week, including hosting the 2017 SPVA Tournament on Jan. 31, and then participating in the Chimney Rock Invite at Bayard on Feb. 2. Bridgeport won the team championship at the SPVA Tourney with 168.5 points with Chase County runner-up with 133. Behind the top two came Sutherland with 87, North Platte St. Pats 80, Hershey 77, Kimball 39.5 and Perkins County 33. Coach Wade...

  • Kimball boys suffer pair of losses at WTC Tourney

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

The Kimball High boys received the number one seed and a first round bye into the 2017 Western Trails Conference basketball tournament, but along the way they stumbled and suffered a pair of back-to-back defeats to finish a disappointing fourth. In Friday night semi-final play, they went up against Hemingford, a 62-31 winner over Morrill in a first round pairing. The Horns lost 54-46. They played like they were sick, because they were sick. A good share of the Kimball players were battling illness, and it showed. Shots simply were not falling...

  • Lady Longhorns lost to Gordon-Rushville in first round play

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

The Kimball Lady Longhorns lost to Gordon-Rushville 65-49 in first round play of the Western Trails Conference 2017 Basketball Tournament and failed to advance into additional play at Cougar Palace. The Kimball ladies were the lower seeded team and had to make the long road trip to Gordon in unfavorable weather and road conditions this past Thursday evening, and had to settle for just one game of competition this past week. The hosting Lady Mustangs came out strong, out scoring Kimball 23-6 in the opening period, and after the slow start, the...

The Kimball Junior High boy’s basketball season is underway, and coach Dane Wurdeman says, “Our numbers are low this season but we like the group of young men we are working with.” Kimball opened with Burns on Jan. 17 with the eighth grade boys wining 23-17. Javin Coyle had 16 points, Christian Allen-Van Pelt three, Cole Henton and Ethan Ratzlaff two each. The Kimball seventh grade lost 20-6 with Thomas Muldoon scoring four and Damien Wolven two. In a combined B-game, Burns won 17-14. Zander Hottell and Jesse Heidi had four each, Cole Heim,...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

Other than the fact the Kimball boys were sick, and played sick, at the WTC Conference Tournament this past weekend, I enjoyed a lot of good, and exciting, basketball Friday and Saturday at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff. I like the atmosphere of Cougar Palace and Mrs. Southard and I took in all four games each day. The Mitchell girls the number one seed, won the championship as expected, but they had to battle hard both nights to do so. In the semi-final game, they slipped past Gordon-Rushville 50-48, and in the title game they won over a good...

  • Kimball Event Center headed in the right direction

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 2, 2017

The Kimball Event Center was put up for bids following a special Kimball City Council meeting on Nov. 8, 2016, with the caveat that it be used in a similar fashion to its current use – as an event venue and community center. “The price was set to encourage a buyer (at $10,000). They would receive almost everything in the building, such as kitchen equipment, dishes, tables, chairs, and fitness equipment,” council member Christy Warner said. “That makes it a good deal but the buyer would have a true investment in making the Event Center succeed...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Kaden Adrian

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 2, 2017

If given a choice, Kimball junior Kaden Adrian would choose to perform over just about anything else, and recently he was given that very option, with an exciting twist. Adrian, and his trumpet, will travel this summer to Europe for 16 days of performances as an Ambassador of Music through Voyageurs International Ltd. Chosen, with several other students, by Kimball band instructor Kristi Hiles-Smith, Adrian was the only Longhorn to jump on this opportunity. "Mrs. Hiles-Smith chooses the...

  • Lulf sets school record in win over Bayard

    Tom Southard|Feb 2, 2017

Kimball High senior, Alexis Lulf, set a new school record for 3 point field goals in a game with eight as she scored 28 points and led the Lady Longhorns to a 71-57 win over Bayard this past Monday night. The way Lulf was lighting up the score board, it was like viewing the strip in Las Vegas! Kimball's long shot artist nailed her first trey in the opening quarter, added four more in the second period, and closed out the night with three more in the final period. She eclipsed Danielle Perry and...
