    Kimball's Jaden Withrow proved once again he is the Best of the Best, at the Best in the West, in the worst of the worst! For the third consecutive year, Withrow brought home the gold medal from the Best in the West track meet, held at the Scottsbluff Bearcat Stadium on, perhaps, the worst evening ever, weather wise, proving he is the Best of the Best in the triple jump event.     Cold and winter type weather has played havoc with our area sports schedules once again so not a lot to report this meet that was held on a very nasty afternoon/evening. The junior high track at Pine Bluffs this past week has been cancelled. The SPVA high school track at Hershey was postponed and moved back from last Friday to this past Tuesday.     The Local Emergency Planning Commission met for the first time since Kimball County recently rejoined Region 21 Emergency Management. Kevin Sherman was named chairperson, with Wayne Elliot as vice-chair, Laura Bateman as secretary and Ron Leal as the information coordinator. The committee discussed meeting dates, once each quarter in February, May, August and November, and reviewed the local hazardous material emergency plan and the bylaws.     After two public information meetings, and with input from dozens of interested citizens, the South Platte Natural Resources District chose to indefinitely postpone action on the Oliver Reservoir streamflow Enhancement Project. At their April 11 meeting the SPNRD board reviewed the purpose of the project, to maintain an adequate water level in the local reservoir for sufficient recreation.     Six new members were inducted into the National Honor Society during Kimball's annual NHS Induction ceremony – a momentous occasion for four sophomores, one junior, and one senior. Member Madison Wynne said, "It has been an honor to be inducted into NHS. I am very happy that I was nominated and being recognized for all of the hard work that we students have put in.     As one Kimball teacher battles ovarian cancer, another sets out to prove that no one fights alone. Kathleen O’Brien, longtime Kimball teacher, has been fighting cancer but Jeri Ferguson and her high school civics class, in a show of support, have planned a fundraiser for her.     Braxton Miller and Shay Heim of Kimball competed in the 2017 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships on Saturday, April 1. Their journey began on Feb. 12 when each of the young men won their age bracket in the local contest. Miller and Heim then competed and won at the district level on Feb. 18. Miller, age nine, scored 21/25 free throws at the district level. They followed up with wins at the regional contest in Alliance on March 18.     The Kimball High boy's golf team had the best round ever while setting a new school record at the Morrill Tournament this past week. April 18 will go into the record books as the date the Kimball boys scored a team round of 298 to better the previous round of 302 shot a few years back by the team consisting of Kendall Ferguson, Jeff Greenwood, Henry Heeg, Landon Smith and Todd O'Hare.     The Kimball High boy's golf team kept their wining streak alive with a victory at the Scottsbluff Tournament Monday. No problem for the Longhorns as they captured Division Two at the Scottsbluff Country Club with a 319 score, 54 strokes better than runner-up Chadron, with their 373 total.     The Kimball Junior High track invite held this past week attracted 11 schools with Burns winning the girl's team title and Mitchell taking home the boy's team title. In the female division, Burns scored 94 points with Kimball runner-up with 68, Mitchell had 51, Pine Bluffs 40, Morrill 37, Bayard 36, Bridgeport 32, St. Agnes 23, Perkins County 21, Hemingford 18 and Prairie 14.     With support building for the project and a partnership between the City of Kimball and Kimball County, it appears that the long-awaited local walking trail may become a reality, though City Administrator Dan Dean said it really is still more of an idea than a plan. Just this past week sophomore Brady Kilgore broke a 31-year-old Kimball High record when he won the 110 meter high hurdles at the Western Trails Conference track met in Mitchell.
