    Tom Southard|Mar 23, 2017

With everyone back on the Kimball High Boy's golf team that finished sixth at last year's Nebraska State Tournament, Coach Chad Wise is optimistic for an even higher finish this season. Last season Coach Wise, who also serves as the Four Winds Golf Course Professional, established a motto for the team of "We are here to win." That same motto is in place again this year. The only player who graduated from last year's team is Tyler Magninie, a good athlete who switched from track and field to...

Sophomore Nathan Robinson joins junior Dylan Nielsen on the course this year, a first for both athletes, though they have competed for the Potter-Dix Coyotes on the football field and the basketball court. Though both boys are just learning the game, they have been doing so quickly according to Mumm. "The boys have been working really hard to improve and learn the game,"...

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 23, 2017

With only three athletes returning out of the eight on the roster this season, the Banner County Track team will be concentrating on individual improvements for the upcoming season, and though her team is small they bring a mighty positive attitude, according to Banner County head track coach Kari Gifford. Gifford, along with assistant coaches Bill Gifford and Priscilla Bastian, will return state qualifier MaKenna Dahlgrin, who placed eighth in the state in shot put, and fellow returning letter...

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

Talk of the town, or of the state and maybe of the nation right now in college basketball is none other than our very own Mike Daum of Kimball. The Kimball High grad is really drawing the attention of all the so-called experts who are raving about his abilities and his accomplishments. His latest top achievement was leading his South Dakota State University team to the Summit League Conference Tournament title, which puts the Jack Rabbits back into the Big Dance. I hope you fans got to watch...

  • Banner County considers four day school schedule

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 16, 2017

With more rural schools in the tri-state area opting to move to a four-day school week, the Banner County School Board hosted a community meeting on Thursday, March 9, to examine the potential benefits and pitfalls of the same, though this decision solely falls on the school board, as a vote is not required. “I would like to thank you all for coming. We appreciate your time,” board president Charity May said. “I would like to remind you that we are simply here to listen; we don’t have the answers.” Dozens of residents showed up for the meeti...

Williams, who prefers the term Peer Navigator, uses her own life experiences to assist others. While this is a newer concept here in the Nebraska Panhandle, peer specialists have long been used for military veterans and those in support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Tonia Copeland|Mar 16, 2017

During the Feb. 21 City Council meeting, council heard a request for Keno funds from the Kimball Police Department for the purchase of a police vehicle. “Our fleet is pretty worn out,” Kimball Police Chief Andy Bremer said, “We have three Crown Victorias that are in various stages of disrepair. • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 16, 2017

Positivity is a word that is not recognized by my spell check. Weird, right?! It is, however, in the dictionary, and it means exactly what we would think: 1.the practice of being or tendency to be positive or optimistic in attitude The tendency to be positive, or optimistic in attitude. Well, that suggests that it is almost innate, really. A tendency is something one leans towards or tends to be. That makes it easy! It is easy to be positive when surrounded by people behaving in a generally positive way. It isn’t hard at all to be positive w...

  • Potter-Dix and the "President"

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 16, 2017

Third grade teacher at Potter-Dix Elementary school, Kristen Kasten, paired with Potter-Dix High School social studies teacher, Ryan Coffey to present youngsters with a lesson in the Legislature that they won't soon forget. When thinking of third-grade appropriate lessons on American government, one might question how much is too much, but these two teachers taught just such a lesson easily, by enacting the branches of government. According to Kasten, the third grade students were the...

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 16, 2017

The City of Kimball plans to hire a Community Service Officer to assist the Kimball Police Department with tasks such as abatement processes and stray dog calls. “We are going to ramp up our abatement processes,” Kimball Mayor Keith Prunty said. “This officer will be responsible for making abatement letters and tracking them.” The CSO will be a part-time position, according to Kimball City Administrator Dan Dean. The force, with four full-time and three part-time officers, finds that much of their time is needed for higher priority calls....

  • An injury plays havoc with Kimball girl's season

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

The 2016-17 basketball season started out just like Kimball High girl’s coach Chauncey Pedersen envisioned, with three wins in their first four games, but an injury to a key player helped to shatter those visions. The Lady Longhorns showed lots of promise with a pair of early wins over a very good Morrill ball club and a win over Perkins County in those first four contests, and a lone loss to a Dundy County team that went into the state tournament undefeated. Then, in the second meeting with Morrill, junior Alex Reader went down right at the e...

  • Junior High boys close out basketball season

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

Coach Dane Wurdeman was kind enough to furnish me with some final junior high boy’s basketball results for the Kimball teams. Not a lot of wins this season but there were some individual highlights and some promising young players will be advancing into the High School program next year. Since our last report, the Kimball eighth grade team played in a Morrill tournament, losing to Morrill 47-22 with Javon Coyle high for Kimball with 14, Jared Barnes had three, Cole Henton and Christian Van Pelt had two each. In the second game at Morrill, Kimba...

  • Farming the wind

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 9, 2017

Kimball's wind farm, located just northwest of the city, will soon be decommissioned and replaced with 12 new turbines. 2017 marks 15 years of operation for the local wind farm, the first utility-scale project of its kind in the state, according to a recent news release. Increasing maintenance requirements for the aging turbines, and the associated cost of repairs, led the Municipal Energy Alliance of Nebraska (MEAN) to begin looking for green alternatives. The project, scheduled to begin this...

  • City owned properties reviewed at recent meeting

    Tonia Copeland|Mar 9, 2017

Kimball City Council members reviewed the status of six properties owned by the City of Kimball during the recent Kimball City Council meeting, on Feb. 21. Each of these properties have been used in the past for a variety of purposes and may be used or sold in a variety of ways. Since 1996 the Community Gardens area, located on East 7th Street, were once used as a place for several families to use to grow vegetable gardens. This worked well for many reasons, but in recent years, participation has dwindled. Pictured below. Potential reasons for...

  • The real fans show up year after year

    Tom Southard|Mar 9, 2017

High School sports are a large part of what holds small towns together and the fans that show up event after event play such a large part in the success of these programs. You have the Family Fans who take their turn of attending as long as some young member of their claim is active. I speak of the Moms and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts and Uncles, brothers and sisters. Then you have the true call town sports fan who turns out year after year simply to enjoy watching and cheering on the...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Mar 9, 2017

Western Nebraska didn’t fare so well at the Nebraska State Girl’s Basketball Tournament, with none of our teams getting past the first round. I am speaking of Mitchell, Sidney and Potter-Dix. Sidney came the closest, losing by just four points, but none-the-less, all of them had excellent seasons and we salute them for getting that far. Now, we turn our attention to this week’s Boy’s State Tournament action and it looks to me like Scottsbluff in Class B has the best chance to advance past that first round contest. ----------...

  • Longhorns edged out by Perkins County in Sub-District final

    Tom Southard|Mar 2, 2017

The Kimball high boys had a good run at winning the C2-12 Sub-District Basketball championship, but came up 4 points shy in the title game with Perkins County. The Horns started out by winning their semi final contest over Bayard 53-45 before falling to Perkins County 56-52 in the championship game. The Kimball boys completed a winning season of 13-10 under the direction of co-head coaches Gene Mohr and Nick Kuxhausen, assisted by Bruce Tjosvold. Kimball had good fan support both nights of...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Mar 2, 2017

A salute to the Kimball High boys for a great effort in their sub-district basketball tournament play this past week. Despite a lot of conflicting conditions that depleted their roster, those remaining gave it their all, and played with a lot of heart and sportsmanship, as they nearly got the job done to advance them to the district playoff. For different reasons, this will be a season to remember! --------------------------------- Congrats to the Potter-Dix girls for their district championship advancing them to the Nebraska Girl’s State T...

  • Kimball's annual Spelling Bee winners

    Tonia Copeland|Feb 23, 2017

It takes awhile to narrow down the top 30 spellers in grades four through eight at Kimball schools, but the annual Kimball Spelling Bee finally did just that. Each of the five grades were represented by the six top spellers who gathered on stage in the Harry E. McNees Auditorium on Thursday, Feb. 16 immediately following classes. All of these students made it through the first round of the Bee and the competition became increasingly difficult as enunciator Kathleen O'Brien moved down the spellin...
