  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Nov 10, 2016

When I was in high school we had a career fair of sorts. Recruiters from colleges and all branches of the military came to speak with us about our future plans. I was drawn to the Air Force, a dream fueled by fierce patriotism and the movie Top Gun (I know it is a Navy movie) and the dream of flying a fighter jet. After talking with the recruiter, who told me that women were NOT allowed to be fighter pilots (I hope that has changed by now), we engaged in a fairly short but heated conversation. Shortly, this recruiter determined that I did not...

    Tonia Copeland|Nov 10, 2016

Following a one-year hiatus, the St. Hilda’s Episcopal Church parish will once again sell holiday wreaths, according to longtime coordinator, Wilma Gilliland. St. Hilda’s Episcopal Church has raised funds for decades through these annual wreath sales. Though the small congregation now sells solely to repeat, and very satisfied customers, they once made enough money to furnish the parish hall at the church and complete one very large project – Kimball’s first tennis court. But, as Wilma said, first things first. In the beginning, the idea was th...

That is how acting Kimball Police Chief Andy Bremer feels about the recent agreement made between his department and the Kimball County Sheriff’s Office. A working agreement has been reached between the two entities that provides relief for the local police department when needed and continued KPD backup for the Sheriff’s Office, as they have always done. “Its basically going back to the way, I think, it was at one time,” Bremer said. “If he (Sheriff...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Oct 27, 2016

As a youngster I was able to participate in 4-H for a short time. Though I don’t remember why I didn’t continue along the 4-H path, I do clearly remember the positive impact the program had on me. I joined a sewing club and my sister joined a cooking club. She made these delicious little treats and I put together a pretty darn good pin cushion (that I still have today). Each of us spent time with our mom working on projects, trying until we got something just right. Those moments are some of my favorite memories. I think back to seeing my pro...

    Tonia Copeland|Oct 27, 2016

After dodging fellow VFW member Walt Witt for years, a family request put Kimball's Joe Hernandez on the path to receive another commendation. "I have been a member since 1954 or '55 – 67 years or so," Hernandez said. "For years I dodged Walt Witt, but when a cousin of mine passed away the kids wanted me to be involved in the honor guard." Seeing an opportunity, Witt was able to convince Hernandez to help and once he got involved, Hernandez saw that there was a real need for active members. "The...

The 2016 football season came to an end Friday evening for the Kimball High Longhorns as they fell to the state ranked Valentine 40-0, but the score doesn't tell the entire story as the young Horns gave a good effort. Kimball played the visiting Badgers pretty even in the first quarter with neither team getting on the score board, and even at half time the Horns trailed just 14-0. "I felt we did a very good job that first half and the kids bought into our game plan, but they (Valentine) made...

Can you imagine Kimball County without a fair? That is the question asked by Kimball Ag Society board member Doug Lukassen as he began talking about the ag society’s mill levy request, on ballots again this November, for the third time in four years. The third time may be a charm, or so the board hopes. The first time the ag society asked for a mill levy was in the primary election in May 2012 when the same ballot had requests from the proposed High Point Speedway issue, the Historical Society and the Fire Department. According to Lukassen, t...
