  • Wildcats win latest battle with 59-51 victory over the Coyotes

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 15, 2016

After two tough losses to begin the season, the Banner County Wildcats walked away with their first win over the Potter-Dix Coyotes on Friday, Sept. 9. "The game was a good battle, both teams played. In the end, I thought we made enough plays to come out ahead," head coach Charles Jones said. "It was good for our team to be in a situation to win a game, it has been a long time and I thought our kids handled that well. We still need to work on things on defense to improve on that side of the ball...

  • Potter-Dix struggles to overcome inexperience

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 15, 2016

Bouncing back from two tough weeks of opening play, the Potter-Dix football team put up a fight against neighboring Banner County in league play. Athletes have been working on pursuit and tackling fundamentals in practice this season, according to head coach Dale Frerichs. “Offensive execution was much better and defense had moments that looked good too,” Frerichs said. “Practice and having a game under our belts certainly helped. There is only one way to get experience and that is to play the games.” Potter, which has just 10 players on its ro...

In the first competition, against Mitchell, the Horns lost the first set 19-25 and followed with a disappointing 15-25...

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Sep 15, 2016

Starting off with a bit of golf today, be sure and call the Pro Shop at the Four Winds before heading out as they have been sanding and plugging the greens and you might find limited holes in use. Four Winds Pro Chad Wise said there will be open golf this weekend for certain. -----------------------------Thanks to some back problems and other health issues I haven’t caught any Kimball High sports events yet but I think I am on the mend now and actually got down to Lincoln this past weekend for the Nebraska-Wyoming football game. I like to t...

  • This calf is special, and that's no bull

Susan Braden for the Western Nebraska Observer|Sep 8, 2016

Cowboy isn't just your average calf. From the very beginning, he was destined for great things. "I was cow sitting for a friend of mine while he went on vacation," said Cowboy's owner Kurt Brower of Kimball, Neb. "During this time there was a calf that had been abandoned by his mother, who also was being picked on by other cattle in the herd. He was just born in January, so he needed to be bottle fed to survive, so I started spending quite a bit of time getting to know him." It didn't take long...

  • Where are they now: Brent Bussinger

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 8, 2016

5 Kimball High School graduate Brent Bussinger has a lot to talk about since leaving Kimball just four years ago but he really doesn't have a lot of time to chit chat. "Medical school is already crazy, as they have a mountain of information piled onto us," Bussinger said. "We were always told that medical school is like drinking out of an open fire hydrant and I can honestly say that the analogy is not far off." Bussinger attended Chadron State College following high school graduation, as...

  • Wildcats prepare to face Coyotes

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 8, 2016

Banner County head coach Charles Jones will continue focusing on fundamentals in practice following the Wildcats 91-13 loss against the Arthur County Wolves. The young Banner County team will work on finishing plays during practices as well, according to Jones, and he is already seeing improvement...

  • Lady Cats

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 8, 2016

The Wildcat Volleyball team opened their season at the Minatare Triangular on Thursday, Sept. 1 with the Minatare Indians and the Creek Valley Storm. The Wildcats suffered two close losses at the tournament, with a 2-0 loss first to their hosts followed by a 2-0 loss to Creek Valley. "I wouldn't say that the teams we've played so far have been especially tough, but it is also harder to tell as everyone has the first game jitters. The unpredictability at the beginning of a season always throws...

Each golfer was allowed to play two balls, on each shot, from the tee box until the ball was holed thus giving each golfer a mulligan on every shot! Each golfer was also given 60% of their handicap. Don Trofholz won the 2nd flight...

The Kimball cross country runners started their season on Friday, Sept. 2 with a 5K run for high school athletes and a 3K for junior high runners. "For our first meet out we felt that all of our athletes ran really well. It is always good to get the first meet out of the way and it allows the runners to see where they are at and what we need to focus on more in practice," head coach Tiffany Johnson said. "The first meet also sets that bar for them in trying to improve their time each week. We...

There are four junior high runners who were also pleased with their times, runni...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Kevin Moeser

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 1, 2016

Sometimes you just need a nudge. Kevin Moeser, who just celebrated one year as an EMT, would not be where he is today if he had not received that nudge from Clean Harbors co-workers Brad Reader and Kevin Sherman, who is also an EMT. In addition to celebrating his first anniversary, Moeser has completed the first two levels in his leadership academy training and will attend levels three and four in November. "In each level there are certain protocols you can do," he explained. "This will add...

  • City budget planning nears its completion Unexpected expenses must be anticipated

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 1, 2016

In the final budget workshop prior to setting the 2016-17 budget, the Kimball City Council balanced five departments' budgets without planned shortfalls, leaving those departments with little wiggle room. Often a budget will appear to be made specifically to go into the negative, but, council members have explained in the past that if money is needed for something the expenditure must already be in the expense budget. The trash department worksheet shows a total revenue of $188,800 with no tax...

  • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 1, 2016

After searching high and low for months for “pink camo” seat covers, my mom had all but given up. She searched at all of the Big Box stores; she hunted at the name-brand outdoor store, she even had me search online at every outlet imaginable. In the (almost) end, it became clear that unless she wanted to spend $300+ for custom made seat covers, she was just not going to find what she wanted. Mom has never been one to give up easily (she is as stubborn as the day is long), and I could tell many stories of her determination (read stubborn). In...

  • Kimball High School offers alternative education for students

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 1, 2016

Since the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, students at Kimball Jr. Sr. High School have had an alternative solution for graduation. VALTS, the Valley Alternative Learning Transitioning School, located at the Harms Center in Scottsbluff, is that alternative. “A traditional school setting is not always the best learning environment for all students and VALTS caters to those students. It helps students that might be at risk to drop out and/or not obtain graduation requirements and keeps them on track towards obtaining a high school d...

    Tonia Copeland|Sep 1, 2016

Head coach Nick Kuxhausen said that among the few offensive positives was a long pass from Jaden Withrow to Kyle Spicer in the third quarter for the first touchdown of the game. The second note-worthy play was in the final quarter when the Horns made their last offensive drive of the game, which ended up being the most productive in terms of...
