The Kimball School Board met in a special session on Tuesday, May 30, to accept the resignation of business teacher Ty Neill. Neill in his resignation letter wrote, “I appreciate the opportunity to teach in the district as a provisional teacher. Throughout the semester, I questioned whether or not this job would lead to a career. A solemn ceremony honoring those who died in the service of their country was held Monday, Memorial Day, at the Kimball Cemetery. About 125 people attended the event, which began with 2023 graduate Emma Patterson singing the national anthem, Mayor John Morrison saying a few words of welcome, and Randy Bohac providing the beginning prayer and benediction. In a special meeting on Wednesday, May 24, the Kimball City Council unanimously approved the mayor’s appointment of Jose Ruiz as police chief. According to the Mayor John Morrison, Ruiz is in the process of purchasing a house and will be moving to Kimball in the near future. Educational Service Unit 13, which serves the Panhandle, would like to find some children and young adults in Kimball County to participate in its Title 1C Education Program. Title 1C helps students – who work in agriculture or fishing –with supplemental educational programs to catch them up to regular schoolwork. The Kimball City Council on Tuesday, May 16, spent a significant amount of meeting time on presentations and reports from Olsson Engineering on preliminary expansion and upgrades to the sewer and water systems in Kimball. The United States is familiar to Tamsett; he attended college at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas, on a golf scholarship. Legal issues continue to follow Stoney Vance as the City of Kimball has filed a complaint against Vance individually and his Cuisine Caravan, L.L.C. in Kimball County Court. Vance was the former CEO/manager of Arrow Medical in Kimball. In March, Vance was charged with felony theft-receiving stolen property from a Kimball EMS ambulance. Kimball's Memorial Day observance will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at the Kimball Cemetery. The VFW also will serve burgers and fixings at their hall at 227 South Chestnut. Every couple of weeks, Rose Curless stops by the Kimball Public Library to get some parsley, lettuce and tomatoes. The tomatoes are for her husband. Potter-Dix School graduated 15 seniors at a commencement that began at 2 p.m. and was conducted in front of a large crowd of family, relatives, and friends. After introductions and singing the national anthem, the seniors were awarded their scholarships by guidance counselor Sarah Deeds. Then speeches followed. On Monday, Kyler Lusche placed ninth at the C5 district golf tournament in Kimball on May 15 at the Four Winds Golf Course. After missing most of the season with a back injury, Lusche shot a 39/42 for an 81 to earn a trip to the state meet in Columbus on May 23 and 24. William Serrano was sentenced May 2 on four charges, including involuntary manslaughter, two counts of terrorist threats, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. In March, a Kimball County jury of five women and seven men found Serrano guilty of the shooting death of his girlfriend, Tessa Ghering. The shooting occurred at their Kimball home on Jan. 3, 2022. An affidavit the Kimball Policeman Andrew Lawson shared with the Observer details the arrest and confiscation of suspected heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and marijuana in the parking lot of Kwik Stop. The Dix Road – Road 59 – will receive a double chip seal this summer. Bids for the double chip seal project were approved by the Kimball County Commissioners at the Tuesday, May 2, meeting. Top Coat, Inc. received the chip seal bid for $279,879.52. The project is scheduled to start mid-July.
