The Kimball Longhorn cross county team was in action at the Ogallala Invite on Sept. 23. In the varsity girls division, Chantel Malson competed against the Ogallala, Cozad, Gothenburg, McCook and Chadron girls. She ran in 26th place with a time of 22:44. Participating in the varsity boys division and leading the Kimball team was Braylon Miller in 69th place against some tough competition. Miller ran in 20:51. The winning time was 16:54. Kimball Health Services officials and Andy Forney, vice president and public finance banker for D.A. Davidson & Co., met Tuesday with the Kimball County Commissioners at their regular bimonthly board meeting where they approved the issuance of limited tax bonds for the county not to exceed $6.5 million. Have you ever wondered how the area fires receive their names? It is not alphabetical like hurricanes. According to Ron Leal, director of Region 21 Emergency Management, the naming of the fire is up to the incident commander. Leal said all larger wild land fires are named, usually named using the closest landmark. An excited 14-year-old Ella Kearney-Turner from Colorado rode in her first 25-mile bike race, the Antelope Stampede. Her brother finished first in the 25-mile race, and she finished just behind him on Saturday morning in Kimball. The 25-mile race was the most popular, with a few riders going 50 miles and two individuals riding 100 miles. The Kimball Planning Commission met prior to the City Council meeting last week for public hearings on rezoning and re-plating four different properties in Kimball. The first public hearing dealt with re-plating property currently owned by Kenneth W. Adrian, but under contract to KIM5, LLC. Adrian applied for subdivision to change the current zoning from C-5 Heavy Commercial to C-2 Light Commercial. Kimball School Board held two meetings before their regular meeting on Monday evening. The 2021-22 budget was the topic for both meetings, with a budget presentation by Superintendent Trevor Anderson highlighting the past five budget years of valuations, property tax rates, and property tax requests. On Tuesday, Sept. 14, the Kimball County Commissioners met for public comments for or against the proposed 2021-22 county budget. With no comments at that point, the commissioners opened the hearing for setting the budget. The final tax request for 2021-22 is $3,249,327, a 3.32% increase from 2020-21, which would increase the levy from .449691 to .459842. As an official from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and the state deputy sheriff watch, a section of Banner County hemp farmer Steven Schulte's crop was destroyed Monday morning. Schulte has endured hail, drought conditions and wind throughout the spring and summer, but the destruction of the 300 plants resulted from lab testing that showed excessive THC. The first annual P2P Antelope Stampede will occur on Sept. 18. The Antelope Stampede is an open event bike race on mostly gravel roads. For the next month, crews from Hennings Construction will be working on the water loop project that will improve the freshwater supply system for the city. The 2020 census figures have been released, and the population of the city of Kimball from 2010 to 2020 decreased from 2,496 to 2,290, a loss of 8.3% of the total population. Bushnell Day 2021 reappeared after almost a decade of nonexistence. With cost-share federal funds eliminated from the USDA Wildlife Specialists budget, Kimball County and other area counties are looking at a price increase or the loss of the wildlife specialist.
