Kimball County 4-H'er Giacomo Varra works on his entomology project along with Nathan Rice, UNL Extension educator. First Giacomo "invented" a new insect. He detailed how big it would be and how many would live in a colony – and he imagined that they lived in a rain forest. After he collected bugs and froze them, he studied the specimens to determine what family of insects they belonged in. Giacomo is in the process of pinning them in the collection box and will create identification labels f...
As many area residents know, there is a campaign to build a new hospital. There have been several public information sessions to keep citizens in the loop, providing time to ask questions and prevent misunderstandings. There are project statistics on the website kimballhealth.org and handouts available for the asking. At the informational meetings, many of the statistics were presented. Some have been printed in previous issues of the Observer. The panel during a recent informational meeting at...
The Friends of the Kimball Library Book Sale was very popular this year and many, many books and puzzles went out the door. Thank you all who came and purchased books. Book sales are appreciated by the public and also help the library by clearing out books and making money for the Friends to fund the library for extra programing and supplies and the annual swimming pool party. The Teen Library Advisory Board held a bake sale and the baked items flew out the door. They planned to have the sale...
The weather didn't look too promising, but eight children and two adults participated Saturday in the Farmer's Day and Kimball Community Trail bike race. Jon Heidemann desigmed the 5-mile and 3-mile routes, helping organize the small races and accompanying the adults around the trail. Parents and volunteers also helped watch the street corners, stood at the railroad crossing and timed the events. Gavin Williams did the 10-mile race, and his time was a little under 1 hour. Getting an absolute acc...

The Kimball Public Library is gaining momentum toward the purchase of new carpet, and could use your help to reach that final goal. The library’s carpet fund has approximately $11,000 on hand and will need at least $20,000 to recarpet all of the library floors. The library recently received word that it will be able to receive help through the Howard and Peggy Atkins Fund in the form of a matching grant. For every $2 raised by individuals, the fund will donate $1 to the library toward the purchase of carpet, up to a total of $3,000. If that t...

He has another book coming out in June and working on two more. He wants to come back in a year or so. There are 49 entries in the HighPoint ShutterBug photography contest and they are all great photos. Now the photos...

It seems like January is still the month to reorganize and plan for the year. The Oral History Project that was done in years past is being re-energized. There will be more on this topic in the paper. Some classes are being planned for February and March–more computer classes if there is a demand, and still hoping to get some crafting classes scheduled. April will bring a Microsoft Word class and an Ebay class, so watch for those. Since the non-fiction part of the library has been thoroughly revamped and organized, we are collecting more h...
