MITCHELL - Despite stepping up three classes, the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes proved they were every bit the equal of their opponents at a Mitchell Triangular Thursday night. The Lady Coyotes first challenged Class C1 Mitchell (1-3) and recovered from a first-set loss to win 2-1. Potter-Dix upended the Lady Tigers 23-25, 25-18 and 25-16. Against Kimball (4-1), which also hails from Class C1, the Coyotes had to bounce back after dropping the opening set again. While the Class D2 Lady Coyotes (3-1)...
After a solid 2014 season, which ended with a playoff berth, the Coyotes again hope to find the right touch despite the loss of several key players. "I think we have a good core of kids coming back so I don't think there will be much of a drop off," said head coach Dale Frerichs. "We'll be different though, because the seniors we lost provided certain things and the returning guys will provide something a little different." Potter-Dix finished the regular season in District D2-10 with a mark of...
Though the Potter-Dix volleyball team enters this season going from Class D1 to D2, not much else will look different to Lady Coyotes' fans. After going 17-13 over the last campaign and winning the D1-12 subdistrict tournament, there is plenty of reason for optimism. Potter-Dix returns all of its starters and should prove very tough against its district opponents. By switching to Class D2-12, the Lady Coyotes' new rivals will include South Platte, Garden County, Banner County and Minatare....
OMAHA, Neb. – About a year ago, somewhere along the road between Omaha and Potter, four recently adorned NSAA track and field medalists began to dream of greater achievement. They didn't so much talk about how good it would feel to be a state champion. They talked more about what it would take to get there. But once Jake Johnson, Sam Bogert, Cameron Purcell and Cooper Hicks, in that order, ran themselves to a state championship on Friday in the 3,200-meter relay, they couldn't help but think a...
OGALLALA – Though the Potter-Dix High Lady Coyotes made a furious comeback attempt in the fourth quarter of their D1-12 semifinal game at the Auditorium in Ogallala last Tuesday night, their season came to an abrupt end in a 39-36 setback to the Sutherland Lady Sailors. While the Lady Coyotes trailed throughout much of the game, they managed to tie the score late in the final period at 36 after an 11-2 surge. A late layup by the Sailors' Kaley Stokey, however, was the final field goal of the g...
SIDNEY – For the top-seeded Leyton Lady Warriors, it was mission accomplished in their first postseason game of 2015. The Warriors (10-11) found little resistance in their 40-21 win over the No. 4 Banner County Lady Wildcats in the semifinals of the D2-11 subdistrict tournament at the Cabela's Athletic Facility in Sidney last Tuesday night. Leyton moved on to the championship game last Thursday to top South Platte, 40-37. They now take on Crawford this Friday in the district title game. Once t...
POTTER – Though it may not have ended as smoothly as they would have liked, the Peetz High Bulldogs' withstood a tenacious late-comeback attempt by the Potter-Dix Coyotes to edge their cross-state rivals 61-57 last Tuesday. While perhaps deserving of a better fate after displaying a never-say-die attitude in their home gym, the Coyotes record fell to 5-13 while the Bulldogs advanced to 11-5. With the two big men, Trevor Harms of Potter-Dix and Garrin Cox of Peetz, both playing well in a g...
POTTER – When Jodi Schumacher of Peetz High School nailed a 3-pointer late in the final quarter last Tuesday night, a big smile suddenly overwhelmed her face. Though Schumacher didn't have her best night shooting, she hit the two most significant shots of the game as the Lady Bulldogs turned back the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes 41-40 in a cross-state thriller. The Coyotes lost for only the fourth time this season (14-4) while the Bulldogs evened their mark at 8-8. When Schumacher's fourth-quarter t...
POTTER – With a talented sophomore center getting much of the attention for the Pine Bluffs High boys' basketball squad, the Potter-Dix Coyotes found out the Hornets are more than a team with just one stinger. Though they managed to stay toe to toe with the Hornets throughout several portions of the game, a dominating second quarter doomed the Coyotes chances in a 73-51 loss in a non-district contest at Potter on Tuesday night. The Hornets improved to 11-1, while the Coyotes slipped to 5-10. T...
POTTER – After a busy week that culminated in a MAC championship last Saturday, the Potter-Dix Lady Coyotes just might be dog tired. Despite their busy schedule of late, the Lady Coyotes found enough wind to fight a talented Pine Bluffs (Wyo.) Hornets team to the bitter end Tuesday night before dropping just their third game of the season (12-3). The Hornets (11-1) turned back the Lady Coyotes 44-38 in a non-district matchup in Potter last Tuesday night. With a pressure defense that forced t...
Though the top prize had already escaped their grasps, the Leyton Warriors and Potter-Dix Coyotes still had a long-standing rivalry to settle. Though the Warriors couldn’t defend their MAC title of a year ago, they took the upper hand in their long-standing rivalry with the Coyotes with a 59-50 triumph in the boys’ consolation game Saturday at Sidney Middle School. The Coyotes (6-8) gave their rivals all they could handle throughout much of the contest before the Warriors (7-7) began to pull away in the second half. After 16 minutes of pla...
The Coyotes could not stop, could not contain Garden County running back Tristen Jackson Friday night. He carried for 203 yards and two touchdowns, leading a backfield that rushed for more than 300 yards against the usually stingy Potter-Dix defense. "We didn't play to our potential," said Bryant Knigge. "We got crushed." The Eagles jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead, eventually claiming a 58-12 victory in Oshkosh. In the wake of Friday night's loss, Potter-Dix coaches and players spoke of mental breakdowns and unforced errors. Turnovers...
There are 144 American Legion senior teams in Nebraska and Sidney found itself among the final few in its chase for a state championship. This perspective notwithstanding, Post 17’s season came to halt yesterday afternoon as it suffered its second loss in the state’s double-elimination tournament at Gering’s Oregon Trail Park. The end came after 28 wins, heartstopping victories, miraculous comebacks and even a few dissapointing losses. But only one team gets to call itself a Class B state champi...
