    Tom Southard, The Observer|Nov 21, 2019

The 2019 Nebraska Firearm Deer Season opened up this past weekend and area hunters were finding the deer population plentiful as they filled their permits. Lisa Wangler at Sportsman's Liquor Store has been providing her establishment as a check-in site for many years and was busy once again this year helping to check in deer. As of early Monday morning, she had already checked in 134 deer from both local hunters and many from outside the area – including out-of-state hunters who journeyed to W...

  • The Senior Circuit

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Nov 21, 2019

Kimball golfer Bob Kellner stole the spotlight this past week to take senior golf honors with his play at the Four Winds Golf Course. Smooth swinging Bob, who is 86 years young, fired a round of 41-40=81 on a very cool Nov. 14 when the high temperature of the day was 50 degrees. What is more amazing, he shot 5 strokes under his age while wearing a nice winter coat and wearing gloves! His outstanding play wasn't over as he came back the very next day and shot 41-43=84 to once again shoot under...

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Nov 14, 2019

We are at a lull in the area school athletic happenings, but we do have some junior high sports taking place, and the high school sports practice officially begins Monday, Nov. 18, for the winter sports, which includes boys and girls basketball and wrestling. • Winter Sports Open With Promising Young Wrestlers

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Nov 7, 2019

The Winter Sports Season has begun, at least on the Kimball Junior High level. The junior high wrestling team opened the season at the Banner County Tournament in Harrisburg this past Saturday and then hosted their own tournament this past Tuesday. I have talked with Coach Wade Brashear and he hasn’t been able to gather all the results with his very busy schedule, but we will have those for you readers next week. I can tell you that Coach Brashear is excited for the season of both his junior high kids and with his High School squad. He has 1... Full story

  • Where Have All The Students Gone?

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Nov 7, 2019

While sitting in a medical center in Fort Collins this past week while my wife was getting her eyes checked, I picked up a magazine and found myself reading a very interesting article about how the number of high school kids who are involved in athletics and sporting activities are drastically decreasing – both at the national level and in the Fort Collins area. This also got me thinking about our own situation here at the local level. Some of the figures I will give you were put together by t...

  • One Win Season For Kimball High Football

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Nov 7, 2019

The 2019 Kimball High Football season did not turn out like it was forecast as the Longhorns won only 1 game and lost 7, due in large part to injuries to key personnel and lack of numbers. The Horns won over Southwest on the road in their second game of the season 42-0, but were outscored badly in the other 7 losses and ended up getting outscored 424 to 180 overall while averaging 22.5 points to the opponents 53 a game. As can be expected, they were dominated in almost all categories of both offense and defense. In a look back at the season,...

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Oct 31, 2019

Kimball High sophomore Chantel Malson had the honor of running in her second State Cross Country meet this past week and despite finishing farther down the list than she wanted, her running career is certainly of high caliber. In a huge field of 146 runners at the NSAA Class D State Cross Country race held at the Kearney Country Club golf course, Malson finished 109th with her time 24:14.8 over the hilly 5,000 meter course. Coach Tiffany Johnson said, "State definitely did not go the way... Full story

The 2019 football season for the Kimball Longhorns came to an end Friday night with the Horns losing to Bayard 61-24 at Keith Staehr Field. With the loss, Kimball ended up with a record of 1 win and 7 losses, in a season that will be remembered in large part for all the injuries that took a toll, and Friday night brought more of the same. The visiting Morrill Lions were simply too much for a battered up Kimball Longhorn football squad in Friday night action at Keith Staehr Field with a final score of 48-6. With the loss, Kimball falls to 1 and 5 on the season with two games remaining on the schedule. Tom Southard, The Observer|Oct 17, 2019

After back-to-back conference races this past week, the Kimball High Cross Country Team heads to Bridgeport today for their District race with a start time of 3 p.m.. The District meet is the race that determines what teams, and which individuals, advance to the State competition. A smart move by conference officials saw them move their schedule meets up to avoid the weather that moved through the area last week and the runners were rewarded by some good running conditions. On Tuesday, the...

  • Cross Country Team Travels 193 Miles To Canceled Meet

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Oct 10, 2019

No cross country to report this week thanks to lack of communication from Gothenburg to Kimball. Coach Tiffany Johnson took her cross country team all the way to Gothenburg this past Thursday afternoon (193 miles) only to arrive and be told the meet had been cancelled! Anyway, you can read about the running of the Farmer’s Day Fun Run in this week’s sports. A change in advance of the cross country meets scheduled for this week as officials have wisely moved them ahead of the bad weather we are forecast to get. The Western Trails meet at Bay...

Kimball will have two golfers in next week's girls state golf tournament at Lake Maloney Golf Course in North Platte as Payton Wise and Katie Heeg both earned top 10 finishes at the district tournament in McCook this past Tuesday. Heeg finished eighth with her round of 117, and the sophomore teammates will both move on to state play....

  • Kimball Golfers Prepare For District

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Oct 3, 2019

The Kimball High girls golf team played in their final two tournaments this past week as they have only their District Tournament play remaining and hopefully a qualification for the State Tournament. In their final two warm up, and regular season tournaments, they had a sad appearance, and then another very good showing. The not-so-good showing was at the Ogallala Tournament on a Tuesday where the Kimball ladies failed to place a single golfer in the top medal group. It took a round of 92 to... Full story

The talented young sophomore ran 10th in the field of 114 varsity girl runners and her time of 21:49.4 moved her up into 2nd all time in the Kimball High School sophomore records for the 5K distance. Malson's personal best was just one of the personal best times ran by a Kimball girl as Raven Johnson duplicated that feat with her time of 26:41.09 to finish 74th. Brandi Councilman ran a season best...

  • Football Longhorns Suffer 52-12 Loss At Hemingford

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Oct 3, 2019

The Kimball High football team saw their record fall to 1 and 3 following a 55-12 loss on the road to Hemingford Friday night. The Horns have suffered some injuries that hurt their cause, and they have faced three very strong 8-man football teams already. Christian Allen-VanPelt, a hard nosed junior, was pushed into a new role Friday with senior quarterback Brendan Walker sidelined with injury problems and did an admirable job for Kimball but the posing game hurt to some degree. VanPelt gave Kimball a short lived lead with his 23 yard...

  • Local Sports In Full Swing, Including Junior High

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Sep 26, 2019

The local school sports scene is in full swing and this includes junior high activities for Kimball. It’s hard to get to all of these activities, but thank you coach Dane Wurdeman for sending some football results this week. On September 10 the Kimball Junior High football team played Hemingford and took the young Bobcats right to the final minutes before losing a close nail-biter, 22-20. Kimball came out and took their opening drive for a touchdown with Derek Kohffman and Shay Heim running the ball tough inside. It used up about 10 to 12 p... Full story
