Wise, along with Ethan Cates of Cheyenne Central and Blake Danni of Cheyenne East. All shot 75 to end in a three-way tie for medalists, forcing playoff holes. Dillon parred the first playoff hole, but par was not good as the two Cheyenne golfers both birdied, forcing more playoff holes. Both Cheyenne golfers then birdied the second hole as well, but it got even better...

Not much to report in regard to area high school spring sports happenings, thanks to more winter weather and more cancellations and postponements. The Kimball high golf team did get their first tournament played at Mitchell, and you can catch the results of that in a story in this week’s meager high school sports. The Western Trails track meet, scheduled for this past Saturday at Bayard, was called off due to the snowstorm and was to be double scored in conjunction with the George Calvert Meet held at Mitchell this past Tuesday. Due to d...

  • A Blizzard In The Works

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 11, 2019

The weather cooperated enough to allow our area track and golf athletes a chance to get in some competition this past week, but watch out again this week. Already the Potter-Dix Junior High track meet, held at Kimball, has been cancelled from April 10 and moved to April 24. Boy’s golf at Bridgeport, today, Thursday, April 11 is very doubtful I would say, what with a blizzard in the forecast. The Kimball boy golfers are scheduled to play at Chase County Saturday, and at Morrill next Tuesday. ------------------------------------------------------...

Kimball's Brady Kilgore is still undefeated in the hurdles after winning both hurdle races at last Saturday's Mitchell Invitational Track and Field Meet. I enjoyed taking in the Tri-State Track Meet at Chappell on Monday . . . well kinda. All was good until I experienced a pesky nose-bleed that wouldn’t stop, but a trip to the Chappell Regional West facility where I was greeted and treated, quite well, pretty much solved the problem, at least for the moment. They had to call Kyle Brown, the pleasant young man who burned the inside of my right nostril to stop the flow, from the track meet also. He was there to attend any possible injuries to tracksters. But enough of my medical conditions. M...

  • Kimball Boys Team Champions At Creek Valley Track Invite

    Tom Southard|Apr 4, 2019

A good day on the track, and in the field, for the Kimball High Track Team this past Monday at the Tri-State Track Meet held at the Creek Valley High School in Chappell. The Kimball boys won the Team Championship with 94 points, the Kimball girls finished fifth with 42 points, and Kimball wound up second behind Pine Bluffs in the Combined Team Scores, with 136 points. Weather-wise, it was an on and off type day where at times the sun would shine and it was fairly nice, and at times it was windy...

Seems like I have been discussing the weather in my column about as much as I have been local sporting activities, and I guess the reason for that is because it plays a major role in what is happening, or is going to happen, in our sporting world. The Kimball Track Invite got cancelled this past Saturday because of .... the weather! A quick decision was made by coach Gene Mohr and the Kimball High Administration to send the team to the Morrill Early Bird Invite. Coach Mohr said he took about half the team, and despite the cold and soggy...

The first event on Kimball’s Spring Sport season has come and gone with the Longhorns cancelling out of the Chadron State College Indoor Track and Field Meet this past Saturday because of the weather and road conditions. The event went on as scheduled, but with less than half of the usual contestants according to one report. The next scheduled event is this Saturday for the Kimball High Track Invite, but it is rather doubtful if this will take place either, according to Kimball school officials. Because of the snow and wetness in the jump a...

  • Kimball Boys Will Miss 5 Seniors

    Tom Southard|Mar 21, 2019

The 2018-19 Kimball High Boys Basketball team had a hard time securing wins this past season, ending up with seven wins and 14 losses. It wasn't because of lack of effort as the Longhorns played hard each time out, but oftentimes the shots just didn't fall, and there were too many miscues, especially in the closing minutes of games. Coach Luke Dea offered some of his thoughts on the year. "It was a very trying season, on and off the court," Dea said. "This group overcame a lot of distractions...

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Mar 14, 2019

Welcome to the spring sports season in Western Nebraska! If the bus driver can see the road, and if they have them plowed open by Saturday, the Kimball High track team will head up to Chadron State College for their first meet of the season, which thankfully is an indoor meet. Coach Gene Mohr has 39 tracksters checked out with 21 girls and 18 boys, but may take a limited number to this meet. The outdoor season will open March 23 at the Kimball Invitational. Come on Weather Man ... Give us a break! The Kimball High boys golf team has been...

  • 2018-19 Lady Longhorns: Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

    Tom Southard, Western Nebraska Observer|Mar 14, 2019

The 2018-19 basketball season for the Kimball High girls wound up with 10 wins and 11 losses, but when we consider the opposition the Lady Longhorns faced throughout the season a lot of credit has to be awarded to the Kimball team. They suffered an early season loss to Dundy County-Stratton, which finished 2nd in the State D-1 Tournament and highly ranked. They had a loss to state ranked Class B Sidney, which was a state tournament qualifier. They lost to North Platte St Pats, another State...

  • Record Setting Season For Girls

    Tom Southard, Western Nebraska Observer|Mar 14, 2019

The Kimball High Lady Longhorn Basketball Team ended up with a win-loss season of 10 and 11, but nonetheless they had some school record breaking happenings. As a team, they improved the school mark of fewest points allowed in a game when they held Potter-Dix to just 12, bettering the old mark of 13 to McPherson County in 2014-15. Senior Kate Reader moved her name up in several categories despite not playing her junior season after injuring a knee. In no particular order, she moved into 14th place in points in a season with 271, is now fifth...

Still not a lot to talk about as far as local sports activities. Stephen Bateman was named All Conference by the Western Trails Conference at 285 pounds, and Izaak Rohde was Honorable Mention at 182 pounds. The All Conference awards are given out by performance in the Conference Tournament. The All Conference selections have been made for WTC boys and girls basketball also, but they have asked not to release them until the Bridgeport boys wind up their stay at the State Tournament. Daum Update We can always talk about Mike Daum, and I love to...

  • Longhorn Wrestling Needs Numbers

    Tom Southard|Mar 7, 2019

With just a total of five wrestlers, Kimball High Wrestling coach Wade Brashear is looking for more numbers as he tries to build the program. “We did pretty well for what we had to work with this year, but we need more wrestlers,” Brashear said. “We should have a good group of incoming freshmen next year and I hope for at least 5 to 7 of this year’s 8th graders to join us.” Of the five wrestlers on this year’s team, two will graduate, and they are the two who ended up as state qualifiers. They will be missed for certain. Jordan Cluff close...

  • Dauminator Adding To His Legend

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Feb 28, 2019

And Mike Daum continues to add on to the legend he is building in his illustrious collegiate basketball career at South Dakota State. A pair of big wins came this past week, in which he was the spearhead, as he piles on more points and more rebounds. In a Thursday night 92-83 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, Mike had 38 points and 20 rebounds. He was 4/8 on three point attempts and 8/11 at the line, had three assists, three steals, and a personal career high of five blocked shots. On Saturday...

  • Sub-District Semifinals The End For Longhorns

    Tom Southard, Western Nebraska Observer|Feb 28, 2019

The Kimball High boys saw their basketball season come to a close with a 55-39 loss to top-seeded Bridgeport in semifinal play of the tournament held at the Scottsbluff High School this past week. With the loss, Kimball's season goes into the books at 7 wins and 14 losses. It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams. The Horns gave the highly touted Bulldogs a scare early, but faltered down the stretch. In this final meeting, Kimball trailed 14-10 at the quarter break and were...

I enjoyed being a part of the Kimball boys win over Morrill this past Monday night in a game held at the Scottsbluff gym. Both schools had a good following and tournament atmosphere always adds a bit extra. The Kimball Cheer Team, under the direction of coach Tiffany Dea, put on a great half time performance, and I assume it was one that they used this past weekend where they won two championships in the Nebraska State Cheer competition, held in Grand Island. The Kimball team was the best in Non-Tumbling and Game Day. Congrats, and thanks for...

  • Cluff Adds One More State Win To Resume

    Tom Southard|Feb 21, 2019

Jordan Cluff and Toby McManigal, Kimball High's two state qualifiers for the 2019 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament, failed to make the medal stand at Omaha, but can add the experience to their list of athletic accomplishments at Kimball High. Cluff, a senior, who was making a repeat trip to the big show, garnered one more win but suffered two losses as well, ending his season at 26-11. In his first match Jordan won 11-10 over Reeves of Battle Creek in his 113 pound weight division, then lost...

  • Kimball Boys Advance With 60-49 Win Over Morrill

    Tom Southard|Feb 21, 2019

The Kimball High boys put together one of their better games Monday night in sub-district tournament play to win 60-49 over Morrill, keeping their season alive and advancing them into semi final play against number one seed Bridgeport. It was a hard fought battle with 37 fouls called and 52 free throws shot. Kimball coach Luke Dea went to his bench often and got good play out of all of his Longhorns with eight players total getting into the scoring columns. The two teams battled even in the opening period that ended at 12-12 with five Horns...

  • Kimball Boys Fall At Mitchell, 67-55

    Tom Southard|Feb 21, 2019

The Kimball High boys closed out their regular season with a trip to Mitchell this past Friday evening and suffered a 67-55 loss to the young, but talented, Mitchell club. The Tigers outscored the Horns, and lead every quarter break. Mitchell jumped out to a 14-4 first quarter lead before Brayden Tyan hit a trey and Brendan Walker scored on a rebound shot to close to 14-9 at quarter's end. At half time the Tigers led 30-22, and were on top 49-40 going into the final period. The Horns were led...
