    The Kimball High girls saw their basketball season come to an end with a first round loss in sub-district tournament play, losing 58-53 to Bayard, a team they had defeated twice earlier. It was a back and fourth contest with the lead exchanged multiple times, and close from start to finish. Bayard had a narrow one point lead after one quarter of play with the score board showing 12-11. Kimball sophomore Megan Spicer had the hot hand early and scored seven first quarter points.     An interesting and exciting week of area High School sports. I, and all of you fans, were treated to some unusual scores and other happenings. Pine Bluffs came to Kimball on a Tuesday evening and once again both their girls and boys are having great success on the basketball courts. The boys have only 1 loss and that was to Laramie, one of the state’s largest programs, and the girls came to Kimball with only 2 losses.     Kimball will have two wrestlers involved in this year's Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament being held this weekend at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha that starts today (Thursday). Jordan Cluff, a senior, who was also a state qualifier last year as a junior and won two matches at the big show a year ago, will be joined this year by senior teammate Toby McManigal who is making his first state appearance.     The Pine Bluffs boys came to Kimball this past week boasting an enviable win-loss record of 14-1 and went back home with one more win giving the fans a view of just how talented they are. The Hornets came out on top 78-51 in a display of long range shooting skills as they netted 15 treys on the evening led by Justus Golding with 6 treys and a game high 20 points.     The Kimball boys put 4 quarters of basketball together and finished out the 4th quarter in securing a 66-56 win at Hemingford this past Friday night. The Longhorns got it rolling with 20 points in the opening period while holding the hosting Bobcats to 15.     The Western Trails Conference Basketball Tournament of 2019 is in the books and it played out just like it was supposed to with the number one seeded teams winning it all.     Stephen Bateman, Kimball heavyweight, took 3rd place at the combined Western Trails and SPVA Conference Wrestling Tournaments held in Bridgeport this past week. Bateman had a good day in taking 3rd place honors at 285 pounds winning 3 matches and losing only 1. All 3 of his wins were by pin including a :37 second fall over Jones of Bayard.     The Kimball High boys failed to get past the first round in Western Trails Conference Tournament play this past week, losing at Bayard 40-31. With the first round loss, the Longhorns were eliminated from advancing to additional play at Cougar Palace. Bayard suffered a 79-46 loss to Mitchell in semifinal play and lost to Hemingford 78-75 in the consolation finals to end up 4th.     Kimball’s Mike Daum had another big week of basketball as he led his South Dakota State team to wins over North Dakota State and the Omaha Mavericks. His Jackrabbitts won over North Dakota State, 87-69, and Mike had 30 points, shooting 11/15 from the field and 4/6 on 3 pointers, plus 4/5 at the foul line, and he had 17 rebounds.     A split weekend for the Kimball High girls as they won big at Sutherland on Friday night, but lost like every other team has done to North Platte St. Pats on Saturday.
