  • A look back at the Kimball High wrestling season

    Tom Southard|Mar 22, 2018

You could term the 2017-18 Kimball High Wrestling season as being one of short on numbers, but long on effort. Coach Wade Brashear had only 6 wrestlers for most of the season, before Toby McManigal joined the team late after recovering from health problems. There were highlights, of course, along with the disappointments. The top highlight of the year has to be junior, Jordan Cluff, qualifying for the State Tournament, and then winning a couple of matches at the Big Show in Omaha. Wrestling at 113 pounds, Cluff ended up with a record of 26...

  • A tough year for Longhorn boys

    Tom Southard|Mar 15, 2018

The wins were few and far between this past season for the Kimball High Boy's Basketball Team. In fact, the Longhorns ended up with just 4 wins and 16 losses, but the future looks brighter for Coach Luke Dea and the Horns as they graduate only 1 senior and return a lot of players with varsity experience. Kole Bush is the lone senior who will graduate from the program and the part-time starter scored 76 points, but that means that 823 of this year's scoring returns. Bush also charted 41...

Mike Daum did it again. Our Kimball man led his South Dakota State Jackrabbits to a championship win over rival South Dakota in the Summit Conference Tournament, and, once again, they are headed to the Big Show. In his three years with the program, the Jacks have accomplished this feat. And, once again, Mike was named MVP of the tournament. He has also been named, once again, as the Summit League Player of the Year. He has been winning so many honors, it is hard to keep up with all of them, including making some early All America lists. Did I...

  • Injuries play havoc with Lady Longhorns season

    Tom Southard|Mar 8, 2018

After a good summer of camps and league play, the excitement and expectations for the 2017-18 Kimball High Girls Basketball hit a snag and thanks to some very key injuries. With Alex Reader back for her senior year and with sister, Kate Reader, ready to go for her junior season and with a pretty solid supportive cast, Coach Chauncey Pedersen had thoughts of post season honors. Alex Reader had missed most all of her junior season thanks to a serious knee injury that required major surgery, so she...

  • Adam Bohac still winning

    Tom Southard|Mar 8, 2018

Adam Bohac was a stand-out athlete and student a few years back for Kimball High School, and then went on to play his college basketball for the University of Nebraska, where he won more honors and was thought highly of by his coaches and fellow teammates. His name and his achievements are still listed in the record books at Kimball high as he excelled in all three of his sports including, football, track and field and, of course, basketball. After graduating from UNL, he went right into...

Kimball’s Mike Daum continues to reap honors as he leads his South Dakota State Jackrabbits to victories, including, winning the Summit Conference regular season outright. His individual honors are amazing, but us fans are becoming accustomed to reading and hearing about all of his many accomplishments. Again this year, he has been named 1st Team All Summit Conference and Player of the Year, a repeat of both honors he was rewarded with last season. At the time of this writing, he had already been named Player of the week 7 times. Among some o...

  • Longhorns end Season with Sub-District loss to Bridgeport

    Tom Southard|Mar 1, 2018

The season ended for the Kimball High boy's basketball team with a 57-46 loss to Bridgeport in sub-district tournament play, closing out their year with a record of 4 wins and 16 losses. Bridgeport advanced to the district playoff by virtue of a win over Bayard in the sub-district finals and then lost a heart-breaker, 43-42, to Perkins County in the District playoff. Kimball opened the game with a three pointer by Colton Mielke, but had a poor night shooting after that opening trey. They...

  • Junior High boys short on numbers

    Tom Southard|Mar 1, 2018

The Junior High boy’s basketball program is short on numbers and thus, resulted in short on wins this past season. “We take 13 players combined to the games,” said Coach Dane Wurdeman. “The 7th graders are having a hard time scoring and taking care of the ball. Lack of experience is showing, but they got better through the season,” Wurdeman said. Wurdeman praised the play of Thomas Muldoon. “Thomas is the leader on the team at point guard. He passes the ball well and gets the team into our offense. Azael Floes has also been a standout fo...

  • Lady Longhorns close out regular season with win over Hemingford

    Tom Southard|Feb 22, 2018

A big win for the Kimball High Lady Longhorns in their final regular season game and they got that win over visiting Hemingford in front of their home court fans, winning out 57-50. It was also Senior Parent’s Night for the two remaining seniors capable of playing and they closed it out in fine fashion. Hanna Biesecker led Kimball with 23 points and Justine Heeg hit double figures with 11, as they led their team to victory. The visiting Lady Bobcats were in control the opening half, leading 14-11 at the quarter break and 29-25 at half-time, but...

  • Kimball boys lose to Mitchell 60-49

    Tom Southard|Feb 22, 2018

The Kimball boys looked like they were gong to win their final regular season game in front of the home crowd this past Friday night, but, once again, faltered in the second half and came up short, losing 60-49 to the visiting Mitchell Tigers. It was Senior Parent’s Night and with only one senior on the roster, it was Kole Bush Night, as he and his parents were honored at mid-court prior to the start of the game. Kimball took an 11-7 lead, but trailed 12-11 at the end of the opening period of play. The Horns outscored Mitchell 12-8 in the s...

  • Jordan Cluff registers two wins at State Wrestling

    Tom Southard|Feb 22, 2018

Kimball's Jordan Cluff represented himself, his team, his school and his community, in fine fashion by winning two matches at the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament held this past weekend in Omaha. The talented young Longhorn junior earned his berth in the State Tournament with a third place finish in the 113 pound weight class at the District Tournament, where the top four places in all districts advance. Earning a trip to State is a very high honor in itself, but winning a match, and in this...

  • Kimball Girls fall to Bayard in Sub-district 1st Round

    Tom Southard|Feb 22, 2018

The Kimball girls saw their basketball season come to an end with a 44-32 loss to Bayard in first round play of the C2-12 sub-district tournament. Kimball had scored two victories over Bayard during the season, but the third time is the charm theory that came into play for Bayard as they pulled a mild upset over the Lady Longhorns. With the loss, Kimball closed out a somewhat disappointing season, with a final record of 6 wins and 16 losses. Injuries to key players also upset the plans of Coach Chauncey Pedersen and his girls who were thinking...

The Kimball Junior Varsity Boys Basketball Team closed out their season with a 50-47 win over Mitchell Friday night and with the win ended up with a winning season of 10 wins and 4 losses. The JV boys entertained the crowd, like they have been doing all season, with some spirited play and good team work. There is some basketball talent in this group of sophomores and freshmen, and they play well together. After getting out to a 10-4 lead after one quarter of play, they kept it up to outscore the visitors 15-8 in the second quarter to lead...

Lots of positive happenings concerning Kimball High School activities this week. Let’s start off with Jordan Cluff wrestling at the Nebraska State Tournament. It is quite an honor to qualify for the State Tournament, but even more of an honor, to win a match at state. Jordan, a junior, won two matches! He ended up going 2 and 2 and just missed earning a state medal, but he can go back next year and meet that goal. See the story on his state wrestling in this week’s sports. ------------------------------- I got to see pictures of Jordan and vid...

  • Kimball wrestlers perform well at SPVA Tournament

    Tom Southard|Feb 15, 2018

A good showing by the Kimball High Wrestling Team at last week's SPVA Tournament held in Grant. Garrett Pedersen brought home the gold medal by winning the 126 pound weight class and appears to be primed for this weekend's District Tournament to be held at Bridgeport. The lanky senior had a major decision of 19-8 over Lantis of Sutherland, a technical fall of 16-0 in 4:47 of Biesecker of Chase County, pinned Waitley of Perkins County in 3:48 and pinned Bruns of Hershey in 2:28 to go 4-0 on the...

  • Jordan Cluff State Qualifier

    Tom Southard|Feb 15, 2018

Jordan Cluff is headed to Omaha and the 2018 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament! He earned his medal and qualifying spot in the 113 pound weight class. This will be his first trip to state competition. Jordan had 1 bye, won 3 matches and lost only 1 in district action. In the quarter finals, he pinned Edwards of Loomis-Bertrand in 1:51, lost...

  • Kimball Boys Lose to Pine Bluffs and Hemingford

    Tom Southard|Feb 15, 2018

The Kimball boys suffered a pair of losses this past week, losing on the road to a very powerful Pine Bluffs team 74-40, and coming up short on the home court Friday night, 72-61 to leave them 4-14 on the season. No surprise in the loss at Pine Bluffs as the talented Hornet club has only 1 loss on the season while racking up a reported 16 wins! They have height, along with their overall talent, and have only 2 seniors on their roster. The host team jumped out to a 7-0 lead and had doubled the...

  • Lady Longhorns Lose to Pine Bluffs… Win Over Hemingford

    Tom Southard|Feb 15, 2018

A split week for the Kimball Lady Longhorns as they suffered a loss at Pine Bluffs, with the Lady Hornets winning 63-38, but coming back Friday night on the home court to win 57-50 over Hemingford. The Lady Longhorns were up against a lot of height when they travelled to Pine Bluffs for a Tuesday evening contest, as the Lady Hornets have 5 players on the roster at 6 foot or taller and start 3 of those 5! Pine is both tall and young as they start 3 juniors and 2 sophomores and have only 2 seniors on the roster. A good first quarter for Kimball...

The win thus advanced them into weekend play at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff, while all first round losers were done. The Lady Longhorns had an almost flawless start at Bayard and raced out to a 12-2 lead with 5 girls getting into the scoring act. After the first...

The Kimball High boys were the number 7 seed in this past week’s WTC Conference Basketball Tournament and went on the road to Bridgeport to battle number 2 seeded Bulldogs on their home court and lost 43-35, but not before giving the host school a scare. In a low scoring first half, Kimball held a 19-17 lead at intermission after trailing the Dogs 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, and then outscoring Bridgeport 8-5 in the second period. A good night for Izaac Reuter, who took game scoring honors with 18, as he had 10 points at h...

Jaden Mohr and Garrett Pedersen were honored at the recent Kimball High Senior Parent's Night as the two senior members of this year's Kimball High Wrestling Team. Mohr, on the left, and Pedersen, on the right, have proven to be, not only good performers on the mat for the Longhorns, but also as good leaders to the rest of the squad.
