    Tom Southard|Mar 30, 2017

Two new meet records were established Saturday at the Kimball Invitational Track and Field meet and Potter-Dix senior Alexus Rozelle put her name on both of them. The talented young lady who has signed to play volleyball at McCook Community College next fall, twirled the discus 123 feet to improve the previous record held by 11 feet as the old record of 112 feet was set by Laura Gross of Pine Bluffs in 2012. Jaden Ragsdale of Pine Bluffs saw her record in the shot put also go by the wayside as...

The outdoor track and field season got underway for our immediate area tracksters this past Saturday at the Kimball Invitational. Kimball Activities Director, Ken Smith, waved his magic Baton and gave athletes, fans and officials a wonderful day, weather-wise! The Kimball facilities are in outstanding condition and very attractive. If you haven’t been up to the school lately, you need to give it a look-see. A tip of the hat to Mr. Smith and everyone who helped with the meet on Saturday. A tip of the hat also to Alexus Rozelle of Potter-Dix f...

    Tom Southard|Mar 23, 2017

Kimball High School opened up the track season at the Chadron State College Indoor meet this past Saturday and had some very respective marks in their first outing according to coach Gene Mohr. "We took eleven kids to Chadron and for no more practice than we have had, I was very pleased with how our kids performed," Mohr said. The highlight of the meet for Kimball was a win by Hannah Biesecker in the girl's long jump as she took home the gold medal with her winning leap of 15'11". Considering...

I am sure by now you readers all know that the South Dakota State UniversityJackrabbits lost to number one seed Gonzaga 66-46 to end their season. Our Mike Daum didn't have his best game, but still ended up scoring 17 points against a team that is in the running to win it all. He did a good job against their 7'1" big guy in closing out an awesome season in just his sophomore year of Division One basketball! ------------------------------- We gave you the Western Trails All Conference Basketball...

  • High hopes for Kimball High track team

    Tom Southard|Mar 23, 2017

Coach Gene Mohr has high hopes for his Kimball High track team this spring with 29 boys and 15 girls checked out. The boy's sophomore class has the largest representation with 13 young men on the roster, followed by six juniors, five freshmen and five seniors. The girl's division lists five freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and three seniors. Looking first at the boys, coach Mohr has a returning state champion in senior Jaden Withrow who won the Class C triple jump last year with a...

  • Kimball returns entire state qualifying golf team

    Tom Southard|Mar 23, 2017

With everyone back on the Kimball High Boy's golf team that finished sixth at last year's Nebraska State Tournament, Coach Chad Wise is optimistic for an even higher finish this season. Last season Coach Wise, who also serves as the Four Winds Golf Course Professional, established a motto for the team of "We are here to win." That same motto is in place again this year. The only player who graduated from last year's team is Tyler Magninie, a good athlete who switched from track and field to...

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

Talk of the town, or of the state and maybe of the nation right now in college basketball is none other than our very own Mike Daum of Kimball. The Kimball High grad is really drawing the attention of all the so-called experts who are raving about his abilities and his accomplishments. His latest top achievement was leading his South Dakota State University team to the Summit League Conference Tournament title, which puts the Jack Rabbits back into the Big Dance. I hope you fans got to watch...

  • An injury plays havoc with Kimball girl's season

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

The 2016-17 basketball season started out just like Kimball High girl’s coach Chauncey Pedersen envisioned, with three wins in their first four games, but an injury to a key player helped to shatter those visions. The Lady Longhorns showed lots of promise with a pair of early wins over a very good Morrill ball club and a win over Perkins County in those first four contests, and a lone loss to a Dundy County team that went into the state tournament undefeated. Then, in the second meeting with Morrill, junior Alex Reader went down right at the e...

  • Junior High boys close out basketball season

    Tom Southard|Mar 16, 2017

Coach Dane Wurdeman was kind enough to furnish me with some final junior high boy’s basketball results for the Kimball teams. Not a lot of wins this season but there were some individual highlights and some promising young players will be advancing into the High School program next year. Since our last report, the Kimball eighth grade team played in a Morrill tournament, losing to Morrill 47-22 with Javon Coyle high for Kimball with 14, Jared Barnes had three, Cole Henton and Christian Van Pelt had two each. In the second game at Morrill, Kimba...

  • The real fans show up year after year

    Tom Southard|Mar 9, 2017

High School sports are a large part of what holds small towns together and the fans that show up event after event play such a large part in the success of these programs. You have the Family Fans who take their turn of attending as long as some young member of their claim is active. I speak of the Moms and Dads, Grandmas and Grandpas, Aunts and Uncles, brothers and sisters. Then you have the true call town sports fan who turns out year after year simply to enjoy watching and cheering on the...

Western Nebraska didn’t fare so well at the Nebraska State Girl’s Basketball Tournament, with none of our teams getting past the first round. I am speaking of Mitchell, Sidney and Potter-Dix. Sidney came the closest, losing by just four points, but none-the-less, all of them had excellent seasons and we salute them for getting that far. Now, we turn our attention to this week’s Boy’s State Tournament action and it looks to me like Scottsbluff in Class B has the best chance to advance past that first round contest. ----------...

  • Longhorns edged out by Perkins County in Sub-District final

    Tom Southard|Mar 2, 2017

The Kimball high boys had a good run at winning the C2-12 Sub-District Basketball championship, but came up 4 points shy in the title game with Perkins County. The Horns started out by winning their semi final contest over Bayard 53-45 before falling to Perkins County 56-52 in the championship game. The Kimball boys completed a winning season of 13-10 under the direction of co-head coaches Gene Mohr and Nick Kuxhausen, assisted by Bruce Tjosvold. Kimball had good fan support both nights of...

A salute to the Kimball High boys for a great effort in their sub-district basketball tournament play this past week. Despite a lot of conflicting conditions that depleted their roster, those remaining gave it their all, and played with a lot of heart and sportsmanship, as they nearly got the job done to advance them to the district playoff. For different reasons, this will be a season to remember! --------------------------------- Congrats to the Potter-Dix girls for their district championship advancing them to the Nebraska Girl’s State T...

After winning 63-34 over Bayard in first round play, the Kimball girls lost to Hemingford 63-32 in the title game, leaving them with a record of six wins and 14 losses on the season. The regular season closed out on a losing note for the Kimball High boys as they lost at Mitchell Friday night 64-58. The loss leaves Kimball at 12-9 in the win/loss column heading into this week's sub-district tournament play that began this past Tuesday in Sidney. Behind the ten point scoring of 6'7" senior Joe Pieper, Mitchell jumped out to a 20-8 first quarter lead, but when Pieper picked up two quick fouls and went to the bench, the Horns battled back to outscore the hosting Tigers 21-15...

Mike Daum is making big news again this week and if you haven’t already read, and watched some of the National news stories about his play this past week, you must be hiding out in a cave somewhere. Big Mike, the former Kimball High standout who is now outstanding for South Dakota State University, had a career high of 51 points in the Jackrabbits 97-89 win over Fort Wayne. This is the most points scored by a player in a game this year. He had seven treys and was 16/17 at the foul line. He also puled 15 rebounds and was outstanding enough to be...

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

Hunter Thompson and the Pine Bluffs boys put on a show to behold in winning over Kimball this past week 86-41. The defending state champs, ran their undefeated season record to 18-0 with the win and Thompson, the 6'10" super-star, who is headed to the University of Wyoming after he finishes out his senior year at Pine, gave the fans a look at what a Division One recruit can do. Thompson was 6 for 6 on 3 point attempts in the first quarter alone and made the crowd roar with approval on a couple...

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

A tough weekend for the Kimball High girls suffering losses to Hemingford and Hershey to leave them at 5-13 heading into the sub-district tournament play. On Friday night on the road at Hemingford, they lost 55-29 and in their final home game of the season, with the senior girls and their parents honored, they went down to Hershey 49-37. At Hemingford, Kimball jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the Lady Bobcats came back to score the next 10 points to lead 12-5 at the quarter break. In the second quarter, the same story as Kimball scored the first 6...

  • No state contenders for Kimball wrestlers

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

No state tournament qualifiers this year for the Kimball High wrestling team despite some outstanding efforts by the Longhorn squad, according to coach Wade Brashear. "The NSAA C-4 District Tournament in Valentine turned out to be a great competitive tournament full of excitement and heart break," said Brashear. "Our goal was to wrestle our best matches at the end of the season and in some matches, we did just that, showing vast improvement from the beginning of the year. This district proved on...

  • Lady Longhorns fall to Pine Bluffs 59-36

    Tom Southard|Feb 16, 2017

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns were just the latest team to suffer a loss to the Pine Bluffs Lady Hornets as the defending Wyoming State Champions remained unbeaten to run their season record to 18-0 in the 59-36 win at Kimball on a Tuesday evening. The Kimball girls had a very good first half of play, trailing 19-14 at the quarter break with Justine Heeg nailing a pair of treys and Jannel Fiehtner hitting yet another, and Kate Reader scoring 5 points. The 2nd period was where Kimball really...

This leaves Kimball with a 12-8 record going into their final regular season contest Mitchell tomorrow (Friday) night. WOW! Hunter Thompson gave basketball fans a look at how a Division One recruit can play the game when his Pine Bluffs boy’s team invaded Kimball this past week and took home an 86-41 victory. It was their 42nd consecutive win by the way, as the Hornets remain undefeated this season at 18-0. The Pine team is fast closing in on the state record for the most consecutive wins in a row. Back to Mr. Thompson, the 6’10” senior who has signed to play at the University of Wyoming, and who had earlier committed to Creighton. In the first quarter alone...

  • Withrow brothers to compete for the same team once again

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

Kimball senior, Jaden Withrow, signed his letter of intent this past week to play football for the Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers. This means there will be two Withrow brothers on the Tiger roster as Jaden joins once again with his brother Jonathan, who just completed his second season at DWU. Jaden is one of two recruits who were signed strictly as athletes, meaning they could be looked at for various positions and various roles in the program. When questioned about the possibility of...
