The Kimball High wrestling team closed out the regular season this past week and head to District this weekend in Valentine. The Longhorns had two tournaments this past week, including hosting the 2017 SPVA Tournament on Jan. 31, and then participating in the Chimney Rock Invite at Bayard on Feb. 2. Bridgeport won the team championship at the SPVA Tourney with 168.5 points with Chase County runner-up with 133. • Kimball boys suffer pair of losses at WTC Tourney

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

The Kimball High boys received the number one seed and a first round bye into the 2017 Western Trails Conference basketball tournament, but along the way they stumbled and suffered a pair of back-to-back defeats to finish a disappointing fourth. In Friday night semi-final play, they went up against Hemingford, a 62-31 winner over Morrill in a first round pairing. The Horns lost 54-46. They played like they were sick, because they were sick. A good share of the Kimball players were battling illness, and it showed. Shots simply were not falling...

  • Lady Longhorns lost to Gordon-Rushville in first round play

    Tom Southard|Feb 9, 2017

The Kimball Lady Longhorns lost to Gordon-Rushville 65-49 in first round play of the Western Trails Conference 2017 Basketball Tournament and failed to advance into additional play at Cougar Palace. The Kimball ladies were the lower seeded team and had to make the long road trip to Gordon in unfavorable weather and road conditions this past Thursday evening, and had to settle for just one game of competition this past week. The hosting Lady Mustangs came out strong, out scoring Kimball 23-6 in the opening period, and after the slow start, the...

Other than the fact the Kimball boys were sick, and played sick, at the WTC Conference Tournament this past weekend, I enjoyed a lot of good, and exciting, basketball Friday and Saturday at Cougar Palace in Scottsbluff. I like the atmosphere of Cougar Palace and Mrs. Southard and I took in all four games each day. The Mitchell girls the number one seed, won the championship as expected, but they had to battle hard both nights to do so. In the semi-final game, they slipped past Gordon-Rushville 50-48, and in the title game they won over a good...

  • Lulf sets school record in win over Bayard

    Tom Southard|Feb 2, 2017

Kimball High senior, Alexis Lulf, set a new school record for 3 point field goals in a game with eight as she scored 28 points and led the Lady Longhorns to a 71-57 win over Bayard this past Monday night. The way Lulf was lighting up the score board, it was like viewing the strip in Las Vegas! Kimball's long shot artist nailed her first trey in the opening quarter, added four more in the second period, and closed out the night with three more in the final period. She eclipsed Danielle Perry and...

  • Lady Longhorns fall to Sutherland and St. Pats

    Tom Southard|Feb 2, 2017

Coach Chauncey Pedersen got some good play out of his Kimball High Lady Longhorns over the weekend, but no enough to register a win as the Kimball ladies suffered losses to Sutherland on the road Friday night, and to North Platte St. Pats at home Saturday. The Lady Horns are now 4-9 on the season that is fast drawing to a close. Kimball had a solid first half of play at Sutherland, leading 27-23 at intermission, but was outscored 18-1 in the third period to seal their doom as the host school...

  • Longhorns down Bayard 74-63

    Tom Southard|Feb 2, 2017

In a long awaited make-up game that was postponed from Dec. 17 due to weather, the Kimball High boys won over Bayard Monday night 74-63 in front of the hometown fans. The latest win leaves Kimball at 12-3 on the season heading into this week’s Western Trails Conference Tournament, where they Horns are the number one seed with a first round bye. The visiting Tigers scored the first two baskets on the night before Jordan Greenwood struck back with a 3 pointer followed by a steal and a layin to go ahead 6-5. Greenwood continued to shine in the ope...

    Tom Southard|Feb 2, 2017

Kimball had two medal winners at the tough Mitchell Invitational Wrestling Tournament held this past Saturday. Torrington was the team champion with 160.5 points with Bridgeport runner-up with 139. Kimball finished 11th team wise with 21 points. “The Mitchell Invitational was a tough tournament for us. We ended with two placers in Jordan Cluff 3rd at 113 and Jaden our 4th at 132,” said coach Wade Brashear. “As a team we wrestled decent, but we also lost matches we should have won. At times we showed some good quality wrestling, but we lost too...

A very good day on the mats for the Kimball High wrestling team this past weekend as they had five wrestlers place and brought home two first place medals. Winning championship status were Jordan Cluff at 106 and Eric Escajeda at 285, while Jaden Mohr at 132 and Izaac Glanz at 170 both finished fourth, and Stephen Bateman was fifth at 182. A couple of long road trips to North Platte this past week to cover the SPVA Conference Tournament. Had some fog to battle on the trip home on Thursday but the roads were alright. I saw a lot of good basketball and talked to a lot of old friends. I am proud to report that both the Kimball girls and boys represented our school and our town in great fashion. As I have reported several times, the Kimball girl’s team is hurting with the loss of their leading scorer, Alex Reader, who will have major knee surgery this week, but they have r...

The Kimball High boys went on the road this past weekend and picked up two more wins at Bridgeport and Gordon running their season record to 7-2. No problem at Bridgeport on Friday night with the Horns winning 69-46 but had to battle hard to win at Gordon Saturday night 58-53. Coach Nick Kuxhausen had lots of praise for the play of his team over the weekend stressing the defense. "Our defensive play as a team is what made our wins possible this past weekend," said Kuxhausen. "The transition...

It’s SPVA week for the Kimball High basketball team and Kimball fans lucked out in that they didn’t have to travel for first round play as both the Kimball girls and boys were first round hosts. There was a delay in the boy’s game which was supposed to have been played this past Monday night, but due to the ice storms east of us, their game with Chase County was moved back one day, to Tuesday, the same night the Kimball girls hosted Bridgeport. There you go, a double header at home. After the first round play, all the remaining contests will...

After a 4-0 start the Kimball High boys basketball team suffered back-to-back losses this past week losing to Sidney at home on Thursday evening 62-21 and losing on the road to Chase County Saturday 65-33. In the loss to class B Sidney, it was a case of the Raiders getting off to a big start as their shots were falling while the Horns could not get a shot to fall. The Raiders broke out to a 15-0 start, led 22-4 at the quarter break, was up 44-9 by half time and cruised to the easy victory....

  • Lady Longhorns suffer losses to Sidney and Chase County

    Tom Southard|Jan 12, 2017

The loss of their leading scorer certainly played a part in a pair of losses this past week for the Kimball High Lady Longhorns. Alex Reader suffered what appears to be a season ending knee injury in the closing seconds of play at Morrill in the final game before the Christmas break, and was scheduled to confer with a surgeon this past Monday. With the talented junior sharp shooter side-lined, the Kimball girls fell to Sidney 65-25, and lost to Chase County 71-22 this past week. Thanks to a...

A tough weekend of basketball for the Kimball High girls and boys with losses to Sidney and Chase County. Both of these schools have talented teams and will be hard to beat by anyone on their schedules. In looking for excuses as to why the Horns were demolished to such extreme, the Kimball girls have lost their leading scorer and top play maker as junior Alex Reader is done for the season and will be undergoing knee surgery this month. The boys were without a couple of key players due to illness and injury. And, the Horns had an extended...
