  • Dillon Wise Shoots 63 For Course Record

    Tom Southard, The Observer|May 7, 2020

Dillon Wise, the young man who excelled for four years as a Kimball High golfer, is still improving his game and on May 1 established a new Four Winds Golf Course record with his round of 31-32=63! While playing his record setting round with Grant Hickman, Dillon scored six birdies, eagled both the number 8 and number 13 holes, and had but one bogey on hole number 2, when he hit his drive into the trees and had to work his way out. Of note, with his new course record he erased the old record of...

  • Hanks And Hoops

    Tom Southard, The Observer|May 7, 2020

Beau Hanks has accepted a scholarship offer from Iowa Central Community College, located in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to continue playing basketball while working towards a college degree in business administration. The 6'5" Kimball High senior will follow in the footsteps of his father Eugene "Mo" Hanks, who played football at Iowa Central some 40 years ago, and Beau said this was part of the reason he chose to start his career in the same location his dad did. "I really liked the coach and the way he...

  • Muneio Goes From Running To Parachuting

    Tom Southard, The Observer|May 7, 2020

Ryan Muneio was a top runner for the Kimball High track and cross country teams a few years back and went on to run, after receiving college scholarship offers, at Midland University in Fremont and then Doane College. Ryan was a 2015 Kimball High grad who loved to run, excelling in distance events, but he also had the speed to run the short races too. He was a state qualifier in cross country all four years and really came on strong in track his senior season. At the district meet, Ryan ran seco...

  • Linn Aces No. 3; Daum On All-Decade Team

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 30, 2020

STEVE LINN and his hole-in-one at the Four Winds this past week is my lead story this week. Steve got his first ace on April 22 on hole number 3 using a 7 iron from the blue tees while playing in a three-some with Pat O’Brien and Dennis Hoffman. An added bit of excitement for myself was I got to witness the hole-in-one as I was waiting for my turn to tee off on number 4. I watched the ball go by the pin about 2 feet and then back up and roll back down into the hole. Congrats to you, Steve! After this accomplishment, of course, the conversation...

  • Missing Our Spring Sports

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 30, 2020

With all of the spring sports canceled, I thought maybe we could take a look back at last year by repeating a story I wrote when our Kimball boys golf team won its fourth consecutive District Golf Title. Enjoy the memory! The Kimball High Boys Golf Team took care of business one more time in winning its fourth straight District Championship Monday at the Cross Creek Golf Links in Cambridge. The three senior varsity golfers on the team have been a part of those four District titles, and all...

  • Getting Physical

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 23, 2020

While almost all of the nation has pretty much shut down all active sporting events, Kimball's Ireland Olsen can advise you on how you can stay active ... JOIN THE ARMY! The 2016 Kimball High grad, daughter of Rick and Shelly Olson of Kimball, stayed active while a member of Kimball County High, participating in basketball, volleyball, and track. Although she was never a standout as a high school athlete, she has climbed to the top after enlisting in the Army back in September of 2018....

  • Catching Up With Some Good Sports

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 23, 2020

All Nebraska sporting events are still in shutdown because of the COVID-19, but everyone can still stay active on their own by walking, running, riding their bikes, and even golfing, but you must stay the advised 6 feet apart. Nebraska is better off than our neighbor Colorado as there is no golf allowed at all down their way. When the weather allows, the Kimball Four Winds Golf Course is busy, and the course is in very good condition thanks to superintendent Jeremy Williams and his staff. You...

  • While I Have My Record Sheets Out ...

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 16, 2020

The only local and area sporting activities that are taking place, as far as I know of at least, is open golf at the Four Winds Golf Course. By direction of Nebraska State officials, there will be no organized golf, which includes league play and tournaments, until at least June 1, and at that time it could be given the OK, or maybe not. It could be worse as Colorado has closed all their golf courses to any kind of play. What Might Have Been I was looking back to see what our Kimball High...

  • This Week's Sports Rewind: April 14, 1968

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 16, 2020

Looking back 52 years ago, this is a story I read on my KIMB Radio Sports show. It concerns my coverage of the Sidney Invitational Track and Field meet. The names of Pat O’Brien and Barry Frederick should be recognized to even you newcomers to the Kimball area as they are both still residents and quite active in our community, but I can guarantee they are not as fast now as they were back in their glory days! Local News (Sports) April 14, 1968 Darrell Brown shone for the Longhorns in the Sidney Invitation track and field meet held yesterday in...

  • Longhorn Girls Basketball Gets Its Coach: Jaclyn Burks

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Apr 9, 2020

Jaclyn Burks will assume the position of Head Coach for the Kimball High Girls Basketball program, according to a release from Kimball Activities Director Ken Smith. A lot of you fans will recognize her name as she was an outstanding player in her own right for Kimball High back in the days when she played under the direction of Coach Ken Smith. Jaclyn graduated in the class 2009. This past season she served as a volunteer assistant for coach Chauncey Pedersen. Interesting to note that Tiffany Johnson was Jaclyn’s coach also as she was an a...

  • KIMB Radio Sports Is Back

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 9, 2020

Here we have the "KIMB SPORTS ... by Tom Southard" report from the April 10, 1967, KIMB-AM 1260 newsletter. Tom, once the former station's sports director and an Observer sports writing legend, pulled this report from his personal collection. In the Alliance Invitational track and field meet at Alliance Saturday, Kimball set two new school records and tied one. Bob McCarty ran a 15.3 flight of 120 yard high hurdles to erase his old record of 15.5, and was good enough for second place in the...

  • Jock Talk: Sports? Yes, There's Still Some To Talk About

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 2, 2020

All of the sanctioned season sports still on hold so not much to watch, and or, write about, but golf is being played at our Four Winds Golf Course and despite rather cool weather, a few hardy souls have been out getting some very fresh air. I have a hole-in-one to report this week as Tom Rooney of Cheyenne got an ace on March 25 on hole number 12 at the Four Winds using a nine iron on the 152 yard hole and playing partner Jim Mitchell witnessed the season’s first hole-in-one. SPVA Honorable Mention For Kimball Girls I have also received w...

  • Big Mike In Spain

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Apr 2, 2020

Mike Daum is another outstanding Kimball High grad who, like Adam Bohac (see "Jock Talk" in this week's paper), set many Kimball High School records and excelled in the game of basketball. He went on to set many South Dakota State University scoring records and is now playing professionally in Spain, or should I be saying, was? Basketball is shut down in Spain because of the coronavirus scare, and Big Mike is sitting it out in his apartment waiting to see if the League is going to try and...

  • End Of An Era

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 26, 2020

The senior class of the 2019-20 Kimball High boys basketball team will be remembered for its strong play, and unselfish team play, despite finishing with a win-loss record of 11-12. With a total of 8 seniors on the team, including foreign exchange student Arthur Laveran, their graduation will leave the program with but a couple of returning squad members. A new coaching staff will also be in the works as Coach Mo Hanks is moving on to accept the top administration position at Crawford, and...

  • Jock Talk: Virus Precautions Put Spring Sports On Hold

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 19, 2020

Sports are on hold! Thanks to the Coronavirus scare, the National, Collegiate and area High School sports are on hold, with lots of them cancelled for the balance of the season! Kimball High, along with all of the Panhandle schools, are closed completely – thus meaning no track people are allowed to even work out on the school track facilities. Hopefully, you tracksters are working out on your own out on the streets and roads to keep in condition. At the time of this writing, I guess you boy golfers can still practice, on your own, at the F...

  • Low On Numbers, Big On Results

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 19, 2020

For certain there were highs and lows for the Kimball High wrestlers in the 2019-20 season and let's start with junior Connor Cluff setting a new Kimball High School record in escapes improving the record from 35 to 45! Another high was Kimball qualifying 4 wrestlers for the State Tournament! Coach Wade Brashear had 5 wrestlers this season, at least who finished this season, and to have 4 qualifying for the state tournament is exceptional! Those 4 include senior Stephen Bateman, junior Connor...

  • Several Longhorns Make All-WTC Teams

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 12, 2020

The selections for the Western Trails All Conference basketball and wrestling teams have been released after vote by the conference coaches. Kimball High senior Carli Wurdeman was given All Conference honors for her senior and final season, and juniors Megan Spicer and Samantha Bemis were given Honorable Mention. Ilycia Guerue of Morrill was named MVP for the WTC All Conference girls. Kimball had two boys make the All Conference team, seniors Beau Hanks and Samuel Cajero. Kimball also had two members of its boys teams given Honorable Mention,...

  • Jock Talk: Wrestlers, Coach Bohac, Breckyn Kiefer All Impress

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 12, 2020

The NEUSA District 1 Wrestling Tournament was held this past weekend in Scottsbluff and the Kimball Wrestling Club had several wrestlers do very well. In the PreK-K division at 32-36 pounds, Decker Culek won both of his matches with pin times of :08 and :36 seconds for 1st place, scoring 9 team points. In the PreK-K 37-40 pound weight class, Brayson Atkins also placed 1st, scoring 24 team points winning all 3 of his matches with 2 pins and 1 decision. In the PreK-K 38-42 weight class, Shayson Howington’s place was unknown with his record of 0...

  • A Bit Short, But Some Positives

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 12, 2020

The 2019-20 season for the Kimball High girls basketball team shows 8 wins and 13 losses, a bit short of what Coach Chauncey Pedersen was hoping for, but in all fairness, it was a season where it seemed on a weekly basis he was short a player or two due to injuries. The lack of experienced height also hurt the cause, but like most years, there were some positive stats. The Lady Longhorns will graduate only two seniors off this year's club, so there is experience returning for next season, but...

  • Jock Talk: Uncertain Future For Longhorns Basketball

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Mar 5, 2020

The basketball season from Kimball High came to an end this past Thursday at the boys subdistrict finals and, sorry to report, Kimball lost to Bridgeport 45-43 in overtime. Happy to report, however, it was an exciting and well-played game and the Longhorns gave great effort once again. The six seniors on this team who have been together all four years, and dating back into their elementary days even, have been a tight group through their playing days and they have been a group that played well together. You saw very little selfish play as...

  • Jock Talk: Turnover Coming For Kimball Sports

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Feb 27, 2020

The Kimball High boys basketball team had its final home game this past Friday highlighted by the honoring of the senior players and their parents prior to tip off. With 8 senior boys on the 12 member roster, I think it is safe in saying that next season may be the biggest rebuilding year ever at Kimball High! The Kimball boys lost this final home game to a very strong Mitchell team, but they entertained the crowd like they have done all four years with some good effort and good team play. They seem to enjoy each other and for the most part,...

  • Longhorns Cruise Past Morrill, Advance To Final

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Feb 27, 2020

The Kimball Longhorns advanced Tuesday night, Feb. 25, to the Subdistrict championship game with a convincing 57-41 victory over rival Morrill in Gering. Next up is a showdown with No. 1 seed Bridgeport. Game time is 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, back in Gering. Longhorn Nation is invited! Tuesday's impressive victory for the Horns came in clash pitting underdog No. 3 seed Kimball against No. 2 seed Morrill. Senior Brendan Walker stepped it up in the big moment, leading Kimball with 22 points. See...

  • Lady Longhorns Fall In Subdistrict Final, Season Ends

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Feb 27, 2020

The Kimball High Girls Basketball season came to an end this past week in the sub-district finals losing to South Platte 45-17. The Lady Longhorns had advanced to the championship game by virtue of their first round win over Perkins County, 46-31. The season concluded for the Kimball ladies with a record of 8 wins and 13 losses. KIMBALL 46, PERKINS COUNTY 31 Kimball got out to an early lead over Perkins County and were on top 12-4 after one quarter of play and never trailed as they picked up their first round victory over the Lady Plainswomen...

  • Bad Break For Bateman At State Wrestling

    Tom Southard, The Observer|Feb 27, 2020

No medals for the four wrestlers who represented Kimball High at the 2020 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament, but a lot of experience, and a lot of memories, some good and some bad, for the young men who made the trip. For senior Stephen Bateman, it was a painful experience, and he will have a painful memory of the experience of wrestling in his first state tournament. Stephen wrestled Marcus Cave of Weeping Water in his first and only match at Omaha and was doing a good job against the...

  • Kimball Goes Big To The Big Show

    Tom Southard, Jock Talk|Feb 20, 2020

This is the weekend of the 2020 Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament held in Omaha and Kimball has FOUR STATE QUALIFIERS! It has been a long time since the Longhorns have sent this many young men to the BIG SHOW down east. Congrats to Coaches Wade Brashear and Bob Culek and to the four young men who will represent Kimball High. They are, Stephen Bateman, Connor Cluff, Trey Schindler and Matthew Johnson. Enjoy the experience! Talkin’ Basketball The basketball season is closing out also with sub-district tournaments taking place. The Kimball girls...
