    Tom Southard|Jan 5, 2017

The Kimball High wrestling team hosted Hershey and Chase County in a double dual wrestling match to close out the pre-Christmas part of the season with Jordan Cluff, a double winner for the home team. Cluff, wrestling at 106 pounds, pinned his Hershey opponent in :55 seconds, then moved up a weight class to 113 and pinned his Chase County opponent in 5:01. Kimball went up against Hershey in their first dual of the night and lost 51-30, but actually won three of the five matches that took place...

Thanks to Mother Nature, no school sports to report on this week. The terrible cold and nasty weather forced most all of the area schools to call off the scheduled activities although most will be re-scheduled for a later date. I do have a date for the Kimball-Hershey basketball games that were post-poned last Friday evening and will now be played on February 11, 2017. The Saturday night game with Bayard that was also called off has not been re-scheduled as of yet. Kimball also chose not to travel to Sidney on Saturday for wrestling, although...

  • Lady Longhorns pick up wins over Perkins County and Morrill

    Tom Southard|Dec 15, 2016

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns ran their season record to 3-1 with wins over Perkins County and Morrill this past weekend. An easy win over the girls from Grant on Friday night in front of the hometown fans as they coasted to a 65-25 victory, and then a key win over a tough Morrill club on the road Saturday 58-51. That's the good news, the negative news is team leader Alex Reader suffered a knee injury that could be devastating news to coach Chauncey Pedersen and the Kimball team. The sharp...

  • Kimball boys improve to 4-0

    Tom Southard|Dec 15, 2016

With weekend wins over Perkins County and Morrill, Kimball High boys are now 4-0 on the young basketball season. The Horns battled to a hard fought 59-54 win over visiting Perkins County Friday evening and won at Morrill Saturday night 77-49. In the win over Perkins County, Jordan Greenwood got the Horns rolling hitting a three ball on his first shot and then converting a layin after stealing a ball from a Grant ball handler and just like that it was 5-0, but almost as quick, the talented...

Two career-best scoring marks were established by Kimball athletes this past week. One at the high school level and one at the Division One College level. Looking first at Kimball High’s Jordan Greenwood who set a career best scoring mark of 35 points in leading his Longhorn team to a 77-49 win over Morrill Saturday evening. The talented senior has been big in scoring all all four of Kimball’s games this year, but the young man is on a mission and so far is enjoying his basketball journey of creating a book of memories. After four games, and...

  • Kimball Junior Varsity results

    Tom Southard|Dec 15, 2016

The Kimball High junior varsity basketball teams got their season underway this past week with some games with Perkins County and Morrill. A tough week for the Kimball girls who lost to Perkins County 15-13 in 2 quarters of play and then lost 32-30 at Morrill in a full 4 quarter game. Against Perkins County Kaylyn Nelson was high for Kimball with 7, Madison Wynne had 4, and Carli Wurdeman 2. Trailing 29-16 in the 4th quarter at Morrill, the Kimball girls staged a strong come back to tie the contest at 30-30 when Carli Wurdeman took a long full...

  • Kimball boys tournament champs

    Tom Southard|Dec 8, 2016

The Kimball High boys got the basketball season off to a great start by winning their own four-school Kimball Invitational Tournament. The Longhorns ran past Morrill 71-39 in their first round pairing and then held off Dundy County-Stratton 77-74 in a thrilling championship game victory. Kimball got off to a slow start in the Morrill contest and trailed 9-2 early before Jordan Greenwood got the lid off the basket and the shots started falling while they were rimming out early despite Kimball...

  • Lady Longhorns runner-up at Kimball Invite

    Tom Southard|Dec 8, 2016

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns made it to the championship of their own Kimball Invitational Tournament, but Dundy County-Stratton emerged as the girl's champion in the season opening action for the four schools involved. Kimball had a battle to get past Morrill in first round play, winning out 56-49 while DCS won over Potter-Dix 56-38 to advance. It was nip and tuck the entire first half of the Kimball contest with Morrill with the Lady Horns taking a 15-14 lead after the first period and was...

  • Injury a blow to Potter-Dix girls

    Tom Southard|Dec 8, 2016

A serious injury to junior starter Audrey Juelfs (see photo below) was a devastating blow to the Potter-Dix girls in the first game of the Kimball Invitation four-school tournament this past Friday afternoon. The clock showed 5:20 left in the opening quarter of the game with Dundy County-Stratton when Juelfs went down hard with the back of her head banging the hardwoods, and with severe pain to her neck as well. Play was halted and the Kimball Emergency personnel was called. A complete delay of...

  • Wrestling season underway for Horns

    Tom Southard|Dec 8, 2016

The Kimball High wrestlers got the season underway this past week taking part in a dual with Bayard and the Akron, Colorado Tournament. At the Bayard Dual coach Wade Brashear said, "We had several kids still working to make their weight plans so only a few wrestled. We only came away with one win, Izaak Glanz at 182, but ended up winning the dual as we had more wrestlers in open weight classes." Glanz got his win at 182 in a 6-2 decision over Steven Tobacco. In other matches on the mats Zavyer...

  • Longhorn Football graduates five seniors

    Tom Southard|Dec 1, 2016

The 2016 Kimball High Football Team look their lumps for certain with only 1 win and 8 losses, but with only five seniors on this year’s roster, and a lot of young players returning with experience, things may improve next season. The five seniors will certainly be missed as all five played key roles. Logan Stahla, a two way performer as a running back and line backer was an all conference selection. Jaden Withrow and Kyle Spicer were both key offensive and defensive starters who played various positions as running back/quarterbacks on o...

  • Kimball's Mike Daum standing tall early

    Tom Southard|Dec 1, 2016

Kimball High grad, Mike Daum, is picking up right where he left off last season, as the key man for the South Dakota State Men’s Basketball Team. Although Big Mike is having a lot of personal success, can’t say the same yet for the SDS Jackrabbits who are 2-6 at the time of this writing which takes us through the past weekend. Way back on November 3 in an exhibition game, Mike led his team to an 85-64 win over South Dakota Mines scoring 27 points in the 21 minutes of court time, hitting 7/15 field goals and 13/14 free throws plus pulling 6 reb...

  • Longhorns fall to state ranked Valentine 40-0

    Tom Southard|Oct 27, 2016

The 2016 football season came to an end Friday evening for the Kimball High Longhorns as they fell to the state ranked Valentine 40-0, but the score doesn't tell the entire story as the young Horns gave a good effort. Kimball played the visiting Badgers pretty even in the first quarter with neither team getting on the score board, and even at half time the Horns trailed just 14-0. "I felt we did a very good job that first half and the kids bought into our game plan, but they (Valentine) made...

This week is all about a SHOUT OUT FOR BRANDON BARKER! What a great job by the Kimball High senior as he closed out his high school cross country career with a 5th place medal winning performance at the Nebraska State Cross Country Meet in Kearney. Congrats to the Kimball boys’s team for qualifying and running well at the State Meet. And congrats to coaches Tiffany Johnson and Laurie Janicek for the role they played in getting these boys to State and for all of their many accomplishments during the season. This group seems to have so much f...

The Kimball High boy's cross country team is headed to Kearney and the State Cross Country Championship Meet! With senior Brandon Barker leading the way, the Longhorns ran to a team third place finish and a qualifying spot as the top 15 individuals and top three teams from each district qualify to advance to the state meet, this Friday, at the Kearney Country Club Golf Course. What a fun day for Mrs. Southard and myself this past Thursday. We travelled to Bayard and took in the D-6 District Cross Country meet and talk about a large turnout of fans on hand to watch the runners. Cars were parked for long distances up and down the county road outside the Bayard golf course. Our trip was even more enjoyable watching the Kimball boys qualify for this Friday’s State Meet by finishing third at Bayard. It was special getting to watch Brandon Barker demolish the field in winning the individual championship well ahead of the r...

This makes him a dual conference champion this year as he also won the SPVA race at Grant two days earlier. ---...

  • Longhorns Fall to Bridgeport 45-20

    Tom Southard|Oct 6, 2016

It was a night of big plays for the Kimball Longhorns but in the end a big and powerful Bridgeport Team prevailed to win 45-20 in the contest played at Keith Staehr Field. Bridgeport got on the score board first with 198 pound senior Jerrod Fedorchik going in form 2 yards out with 10:16 showing on the clock 1st period but the Horns stopped him on the 2 point conversion run. Kimball came right back on their possession following the TD with Jaden Withrow busting for a 64 yard run that carried to...

  • Longhorns fall to state ranked Hershey 25-0

    Tom Southard|Sep 29, 2016

State ranked Hershey shut out visiting Kimball 25-0 this past Friday night leaving the Longhorns looking for that first win and hoping it comes this Friday night when they host a tough Bridgeport Bulldog team. A stingy Hershey defense allowed Kimball a mere 77 yards of offense while attaining 236 total yards of their own. The winners prevailed in almost every category, but give the Horns credit for playing hard and especially for their defensive effort according to coach Nick Kuxhausen....

  • Longhorns fall to Mitchell and Chase County

    Tom Southard|Sep 22, 2016

The Kimball High Football Team is still looking for that first win after dropping games to Mitchell and Chase County the past two weeks. On top of this, the schedule doesn't get any easier as they travel to Hershey this Friday night for a 6:30 Mountain Time contest with a club that has been top ten state ranked. The Horns scored 30 points at Mitchell getting their offense untracked somewhat, but gave up 46 pints to a Tiger Team that averages around 300 pounds up front and equipped with speed...

News from Four Winds Golf Pro Chad Wise is “Come out and enjoy some beautiful Fall golf.” Jeremy Williams and his crew have recently sanded plugged the greens and they are in pretty nice shape again and getting better each and every day. Right now, there are discounted green fees and lots of open golf. This year’s Open Stroke Tournament was not held due to lack of entries, but a new format is in the plans for next year and it is expected to attract more golfers. The Men’s combined year-end scramble will be held this Sunday (September 25), with...
