    Tom Southard|Apr 7, 2016

With a limited squad of just eight individuals, the Banner County High track team struggles to score points but the girls had a good showing in the throws at Bayard. MaKenna Dahlgrin finished second in the shotput at 36'0" and second in the discus at 103' while Abby Russell was third in the shot at 31'6" and the Lady Wildcats tallied 22 points. The Banner County Boys failed to score. The next meet for the Harrisburg tracksters is at Chappell on Monday, April 4....

We finally got the outdoor track season underway this past week and the Kimball Longhorns were put to the test with a meet on Saturday at Bayard and a meet in Chappell on Monday. Both days were pretty nice, especially for Western Nebraska. The Horns have some muscle pulls and some ailments they are fighting through but still some good efforts from the Big Red. Was fun to get to see Potter-Dix and Banner County at Bayard as I don’t get to see them as often as I did in years past. I enjoy talking to the Giffords and to coach Hilpert and his s...

  • Kimball will field a Legion baseball team

    Tom Southard|Mar 31, 2016

Legion Baseball is returning to Kimball, thanks in large part to Luke Dea who will serve the program as Manager and assistant coach. Coach Dea said that Wade Brashear will serve as head coach this summer and after calling for signups earlier, they have 15 young men registered and Kimball will field a Junior Legion Team which is under age 17. Dea said they have been working on the Legion Field and should have it ready to go soon. They plan to start practice this week with their first game of the...

    Tom Southard|Mar 31, 2016

The Kimball High weight room has been getting lots of use this school year according to Coach Nick Kuxhausen who oversees the weight programs for the Longhorns. Coach Kuxhausen did some testing and posting of results this past week and shared them with me to share with you readers. Kuxhausen said “There have been great improvements from many of the students throughout this school year. The students are tested quarterly on four core lifts which are the bench press, squat, power clean, and dead lift. To qualify to make the weight lifting clubs a...

Thanks to some nasty weather no track or golf news to report this week, and it looks like we might have more of Old Man Winter this week so we might have more postponements or cancellations again. The Kimball High Track invite was called off last Thursday (March 24) and as of yet, Kimball Activities Director Ken Smith has not determined if it will be cancelled this year or if he can find a reschedule date that will work. The Longhorns are scheduled to participate in the Bayard C-D Invite this Saturday (April 2) with a start time of 9 a.m. but...

  • Kimball wrestling future looks bright

    Tom Southard|Mar 24, 2016

The Kimball High Wrestling program appears to be on the right track with improvement showed this past season and everyone returning next year. The highlight of the season was sophomore Garrett Pedersen qualifying for the State Tournament and charting a win at the state tourney. Pedersen wound up the year with a record of 16-16 for the team's best win-loss record. Pedersen wrestled at 120 pounds this season. Other records for the year show Jordan Cluff wrestling at 106 ending up at 7-10 and named...

  • Kimball opens track season at Chadron indoor

    Tom Southard|Mar 24, 2016

The track season is off and running for the Kimball High team and the weather was near perfect at Saturday's Chadron State College Indoor Invitational. No wind .... No snow .... No cold. It might be different today (Thursday), for the Kimball Outdoor Invitational. Coach Gene Mohr said the coaches were happy overall with the performances of their Kimball High Tracksters. "We had some pleasant performances for our first time out. We had some young kids that really surprised and I think our...

One track meet in the books with the Chadron State College Indoor held this past Saturday. Number two meet is scheduled for today (Thursday), but the weather is not looking to cooperate and there is a good chance the Kimball Invite will be delayed and moved back to a later date. --------------------- I do have some wrestling results to pass your way as the Federation State Tournament was held in Grand Island this past weekend with four from the Kimball Club qualifying. Proud to report that Britton Culek and Ciena McKenzie both finished second...

South Dakota State University is headed to the Big Show College Basketball Tournament and they can, and have, thanked Kimball’s Mike Daum for his major role in getting them there. We gave you a report last week on the first two games of the Summit League Conference Tournament where Mike was so instrumental in getting the needed wins over Oral Robert University and Denver University. Big Mike stayed right on course in the title game with North Dakota State, scoring 18 points to lead the Jackrabbitts to a 67-59 win. In that championship game M...

  • Kimball boys record 7-14 season

    Tom Southard|Mar 10, 2016

The 2015-16 basketball season for the Kimball High boys was a losing season as far as wins and losses go, but it will be remembered also as a season of aggressive play and all-out effort! The Longhorns ended up with 7 wins and 14 losses. They were hampered by a lack of height and had to make up for it by playing very aggressive on both ends of the court, using pressure defense and fast paced offense, along with some outside shooting which worked fine on nights when the shots were falling, but not so good when they weren’t. Among the h...

  • Local graduate continues to Daum-inate

    Tom Southard|Mar 10, 2016

Mike Daum continues to excel for South Dakota State University. This past week he was named to the All Summit League Team, was selected to the All New Comers Team, was named Freshman of the Year for the Summit League Conference, and was named Summit League Sixth Man of the Year! He accomplished all of this in his first year of Division one basketball as a red-shirt freshman. The Summit League Conference Tournament is underway right now and Daum was the key player for the Jackrabbits in two wins...

Yep, you can always tell when spring sports season has arrived in Western Nebraska by the weather! If we get some snow, rain, cold and wind, spring sports season has arrived. None the less, Kimball High track coach Gene Mohr has a nice turnout this spring with 53 total including 28 boys and 25 girls and this could go up or down by a couple or so I would imagine. Coach Chad Wise also has a good turnout for the boy’s golf team with 11 at the time of this writing and still possible additions here as well. Boy’s golf should be strong this year wit...

  • Kimball girls leave their mark on the 2015-16 season

    Tom Southard|Mar 3, 2016

The 2015-16 basketball season for the Kimball High girls will be remembered as exciting with lots of wins and lots of achievements, but also as disappointing! Coach Chauncey Pedersen and his girls, especially the seniors, had some lofty goals, some of which they attained, and some they didn't attain, thanks to end of season injury to standout senior Danika Daum. It was a year where the Lady Longhorns went up against, and defeated, several state ranked ball clubs. It all started with a 68-63 win...

  • Longhorn boys fall to Chadron in sub-district play

    Tom Southard|Mar 3, 2016

The Kimball High Boys saw their basketball season come to a close with a 56-34 first round loss to Chadron in sub-district Tournament play at Alliance this past week. The Horns were unable to get anything going in one of their worst shooting nights of the season. The Horns shot 13/52 from the field for 25%, going 7/24 on 2 pointers and just 6/28 on 3 point attempts. They shot only 4 free throws on the night making 2. In other team stats, they pulled 20 rebounds with 8 offensive and 12...

I am not sure that spring has sprung but I do know that the Spring Sports practices has begun at our area schools and throughout the state of Nebraska. Coach Gene Mohr had his Kimball High track and field athletes working out, and in, as they ran the halls at the high school and in the gymnasium, starting this past Monday. Coach Chad Wise will get his Kimball High boy’s golf team going this week as well if the weather and the condition of the Four Winds Golf Course allows. The school calendar shows the first track meet the Longhorns will be inv...

  • Kimball boys win over Mitchell 54-43 in final home game

    Tom Southard|Feb 25, 2016

In the final home court appearance for five senior boys, the Kimball High Longhorns finished the regular season play with a 54-43 win over visiting Mitchell Friday night. In fact, it was a complete sweep as the Kimball junior varsity also won 46-32. Coach Luke Dea gave all five of his seniors a starting role in their final home court appearance but it was junior Jordan Greenwood that got the Horns rolling when he checked into the lineup and promptly hit a pair of free throws and followed with a...

  • Garett Pedersen finishes 1-2 at State

    Tom Southard|Feb 25, 2016

Kimball High sophomore, Garrett Pedersen, made his second trip to the Nebraska State High School Wrestling Tournament this past week. Last year he went as a spectator and to cheer on his teammate Clay Keller. This year he went as a contestant after qualifying at the District Tournament! The lanky 106 pounder didn't come home empty handed as he won a match on the big stage and finished 1 and 2 in wins and losses. No medals this season but a lot of good memories and a lot of experience to carry hi...

  • Lady Longhorns fall to Mitchell in sub-district play

    Tom Southard|Feb 25, 2016

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns saw their season come to an end with a 59-47 loss in first round sub-district tournament play at Alliance this past week. With the loss, their hopes and plans for a trip to the state tournament also went out the door. It also brought to a close one of the better seasons for the Kimball High girls in quite a few seasons as they ended up with a win-loss record of 17-7, losing their final four games in a row. In regards to losses, when senior Danika Daum went out with a foot injury in the closing minutes of the...

The winter sports season for our area high schools is fast drawing to a close. The Wrestling season has already been completed for the most part with the state tournament held this past week. The team dual state tournament is still on the agenda I guess. The basketball sub-districts and districts are winding down and the state tournaments are ready to take place. We are hoping to get some of our Western Nebraska Teams down to Lincoln and hoping they bring home some top honors. ------------------------------------------ I am still getting good...

Kimball High sophomore Garrett Pedersen is headed to Omaha and the Nebraska State Wrestling Tournament after placing third at the C-4 District Tournament held at Broken Bow this past weekend! Wrestling in the 106 pound weight class, Garrett drew a bye, then won 12-0 over Treffer of Ravenna, suffered a loss by fall in 1:29 to Ambler of Broken Bow, came...

  • Lady Longhorns fall to Hemingford 64-50

    Tom Southard|Feb 18, 2016

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns stayed close early but wore down later in a 64-50 loss to visiting Hemingford this past Friday night. It was the latest in a 3-game losing streak that has occurred since the injury to Kimball's leading scorer, Danika Daum, who went down with a foot injury in the closing minutes of a semi final win over Mitchell in Western Trails Conference Tournament play. The Lady Horns actually held a 13-12 lead at the first quarter break and was still on top 29-28 at half...

  • Hornets win out in home court games

    Tom Southard|Feb 18, 2016

Fans were treated to some up-tempo and exciting high school basketball with the hosting Pine Bluffs Hornet teams winning out over the visiting Kimball High clubs this past week. Both the girls and boys contests were close with the Lady Hornets winning out 49-46 and the Pine Bluffs boys winning 76-70. Coach Chauncey Pedersen knew his Lady Longhorns were going up against a very good Pine Bluffs club that had only one loss on the season coming into the Tuesday night game. The Lady Horns were also without their top scorer as senior Danika Daum was...
