    Tom Southard|Feb 18, 2016

The Kimball High boys were no match for visiting Hemingford Friday evening coming up on the short end of the score board in a 67-43 loss. A combination of poor shooting and being out rebounded 49 to 18 played a big part in the Kimball loss to their Western Trails Conference opponent. Kimball got off to a good start and led 20-18 at the quarter break as senior Tyler Magninie tallied 9 1st period points and Creg Barker making some key plays and contributing 4 points. From this point on,...

    Tom Southard|Feb 11, 2016

The Kimball High Lady Longhorns suffered two major losses at this year's Western Trails Conference Tournament canceling out their goal of winning two conference tournament titles this season. The first loss came Friday night when senior Danika Daum suffered a foot injury that kept her from participating in the championship game on Saturday. This of course, hurt the chances of winning Saturday's title game with Gordon-Rushville as the Lady Mustangs, the number 5 seed, surprised by winning it all...

The 2015-16 Western Trails Conference Basketball Tournament was a strange, and upsetting, affair! It turned out to be a lot of fun for Gordon-Rushville as they won both the girl’s and boy’s team championships. There should be dancing in the streets back in Gordon and Rushville in celebration of the way their respective teams performed this past weekend. Take the girls team first. The Lady Mustangs came into tournament play seeded number 5. They simply demolished their opponents. In first round play they won 62-46 over 4 seed Morrill, then bla...

A strong showing by the Kimball High boys this past weekend including a surprising upset win over North Platte St Pats. Coach Luke Dea praised the play of his team both nights. “We played very good both nights, but just didn’t finish out on Friday against Sutherland” Dea said. “We got outstanding effort by all of...

Lots of area sports activities this past week but the snowy weather has cancelled or postponed some of the scheduled events at the start of this week. The Kimball girl’s win over Mitchell was big, but their loss to North Platte St Pats was disappointing. The Kimball boys made up for the girl’s loss however by upsetting the St Pats boys. The Kimball girls had moved into the Omaha World Herald’s C-l top 10 prior to the Mitchell game, but after their win over the then ranked Lady Tigers holding the number 8 spot, Kimball is now 9th and Mitch...

Congrats and a toast to the Kimball High girls and their coaches for winning the SPVA Conference Tournament this past week, and what a crazy and exciting championship game with the Lady Longhorns upsetting the number one seed North Platte St Pats Irish 54-53! Crazy because Kimball played poorly the first half in what coach Chauncey Pedersen said “It may have been our worst half of basketball this season” and Kimball was trailing 28-14 at half time. After getting the score doubled on them in first half play, they came out to go on a 13 poi...

    Tom Southard|Jan 28, 2016

The Kimball High Wrestling Team had one of their best showings of the year at the two-day Tournament in Lingle this past weekend with four Longhorns ending up placing. Coach Wade Brashear said "This tournament turned out to be one of our best showings. We have shown quite a bit of improvement and I was happy with our results. After the first day, all but one of our wrestlers were still in the competition. Jake Jenkins at 120 injury defaulted out of the tournament. We finished with four placers,...

No problem either night for the Kimball girls as they went past the 70 point mark both evenings. They had a slow start with Bridgeport falling behind 14-9 but ended up on top at the quarter 15-14. They got things rolling in the second period out scoring the visitors 23-10 to take a...

  • Kimball boys fall

    Tom Southard|Jan 21, 2016

The Kimball High boys suffered losses to Bridgeport and Gordon-Rushville the past weekend in their final tuneup for the SPVA Conference Tournament that takes place this week. The Longhorns fell to state ranked Bridgeport 66-52 on Friday evening and lost 56-44 to Gordon-Rushville on Saturday. Bridgeport is big, by any class, with only 3 players less than 6'1" on their 15-member varsity roster, which includes four players at 6'6". Once again, Kimball's smaller lineup played hard and aggressive...

  • Kimball picks up win at Potter

    Tom Southard|Jan 21, 2016

Kimball picked up wins at Potter-Dix this past week in contests featuring the neighboring communities. The stands were full and were treated to some good high school basketball as the Class D-2 Coyotes gave a good accounting of themselves against the larger C-l Kimball. The Potter-Dix girls came into the contest ranked number 7 in the state C-2 rankings, but got off to a very slow start trailing 17-3 at the quarter break, and were down 28-12 at half time. They got their game going in the third...

I covered a lot of basketball this past week, 11 games total, before getting back in the saddle again Monday for the start of the SPVA Conference Tournament play. I enjoyed getting to take in a game at Potter once again after limiting my writing to mostly just Kimball activities a few years back as I try in vain to simply retire from the business of writing sport stories. Trust me, it is going to happen. The games between Potter-Dix and Kimball were very competitive for both the girls and boys and Class D-2 Coyotes have a lot of talent for...

Madison Biesecker accounted f...

  • Longhorns win at Mitchell

    Tom Southard|Jan 14, 2016

The Kimball boys put it all together at Mitchell Saturday night to secure a 70-55 win over the taller Tigers. This was certainly the highlight of the week for the Longhorns as they also suffered losses to Sidney (82-46), and Chase County (58-40). The Horns returned to action at Sidney Thursday evening following a three week layoff from competition and the Class B number three ranked Red Raiders are all they were publicized. They have height, talent, and depth! Kimball did what they do almost...

    Tom Southard|Jan 14, 2016

A tough week for the Kimball High girl's basketball team. After a three week layoff for the Christmas Holiday break, the Lady Horns returned to action with a three night consecutive schedule facing some of their strongest competition of the season. They returned to play with a road trip to Sidney to face the state ranked Lady Raiders who are rated number 10 in Class B by the Omaha World Herald and gave the larger school all they could handle before losing 52-47. The following night, yet another...
