The Kimball High Basketball Teams faced some very strong competition this past week and they have more of the same this week. The Kimball boys had to start off the new year facing Sidney on the road and Sidney is ranked number 3 in the State Class B rankings. They ran past Kimball with 11 players getting into the scoring act and 5 in double figures as they whipped the Horns 82-46. The Red Raiders are good! They proved it the next night by beating number 9 ranked Gering 59-44. Tomorrow night (Friday) the Kimball boys host Bridgeport, ranked 5th...

    Tom Southard|Jan 14, 2016

The Kimball Junior Varsity Basketball Teams had a busy week just like the varsity but not a lot of high lights. The boy’s JV started out at Sidney and got chewed up pretty good by the larger school losing 72-31. Brandon Barker scored 12 points with 2 treys, Izaak Reuter had 8, Kale Bush 5, Brady Kilgore 5, and Colton Mielke 3. The Kimball boys had a big night at Mitchell, winning 48-31. • Daum earns national praise

    Tom Southard|Jan 7, 2016

Kimball's Mike Daum is drawing national praise from several national sports sources for his basketball playing abilities as a red-shirt freshman at South Dakota State University. The 6'9" former Kimball High standout signed at South Dakota State University after weighing his other options, feeling it was the right fit for him after visits and working out with members of the Jackrabbit team following his graduation at Kimball High where he set several new school records. After sitting out his...

  • Ferguson a leader for Hastings College

    Tom Southard|Jan 7, 2016

Kimball’s Kendall Ferguson is proving to be a leader and a mainstay for the Hastings College Men’s Basketball Team. Although he is listed as a senior and a starter, the 6’5” former Kimball High standout is actually more like a red-shirt freshman, as far as his collegiate basketball goes. Ferguson went to Hastings on a football scholarship, recruited as a quarterback prospect. He spent his first year trying to get playing time at that position. The following year he moved to an end position just wanting to get on the field and get playing time....

With our local high school teams idle this past week, and longer, the local sports scene has been quiet for our athletes, coaches, and fans. Not the case for a couple of our former Kimball High basketball standouts however and I enjoyed catching up on their games this past week and writing about their illustrious accomplishments. Be sure and read about Kendall Ferguson and Mike Daum in separate stories this week. These two are performing at phenomenal standards! ---------------------------------- The local sports scene gets busy this week, and...

  • Longhorns 3 - 3 at break

    Tom Southard|Dec 31, 2015

The Kimball High boys are adapting to the fast paced style of basketball that coach Luke Dea and his staff are wanting them to play, and despite a lack of height, the Horns are 3-and 3 at the Christmas break. Almost every time out they are facing teams with more height, but they make up for it by playing a pressure type defense, moving the ball fast on offense, and taking their shots, with a bevy of good shooters. The Horns have scored 357 points and are averaging 59.5 points per game. They...

Coach Chauncey Pedersen saw one of his Christmas wishes come true as his Kimball High girls are 6-0 at the Holiday Break! Now,after an extended break, the Lady Horns returned to practice this week getting ready for a tough return with three games in a row beginning January 7-8-9. The January 7 game is at Sidney against a strong Class B school, then a road trip to face a very good Mitchell team the next night and finally a home game on January 9 with Chase County coming to town. Good bye 2015 and Hello 2016. You sports fans have had a short break, along with all of our area high school coaches and athletes, but now it is time to usher in the new year and get back to work. All Nebraska high school athletes were to have an NSAA Moratorium where they would not practice for five days from December 23 to December 28. This means that our local programs got back to practicing this past Monday and they will return to action January 7. The Kimball High wrestlers will be on the home mats hosting the Western Trails Conference Tou...

  • An emotional moment - two communities bonded

    Tom Southard|Dec 24, 2015

An emotional event took place following the Kimball and Hershey girl's basketball game in Hershey this past Friday evening. Following the game, which Kimball won 44-38, Hershey coach and Activities Director, Jeremy Thomas, with microphone in hand went to mid-court and asked the fans if they would please remain seated. He then asked members of both teams to join him at mid-court, along with the coaches, and a special invite to Kimball teacher Jeri Ferguson. This event all relates back to one...

  • Kimball boys 3-3 at holiday break

    Tom Southard|Dec 24, 2015

A split weekend for the Kimball High boys with a loss at Hershey and a win at Bayard leaving them at 3-3 going into the Holiday break. The Horns were up against some large and stocky young men at Hershey and had a hard time competing on the boards resulting in a 69-52 loss to the Panthers, but came back strong Saturday at Bayard to secure their third win of the season with a final score board reading of 54-41. Coach Dustin Jorgenson’s Hershey boys were 0-4 coming into the Kimball game but he said “We could easily be 4-0. We lost some close gam...

  • Kimball girls perfect 6-0 at break

    Tom Southard|Dec 24, 2015

Two more wins for the Kimball High girls over the weekend leaving them at 6-0 going into the Christmas break. With wins at Hershey on Friday night, and at Bayard on Saturday, the Lady Longhorns and coach Chauncey Pedersen have attained their first short term goal of being 6-0 at the break. On a night when the shots were not falling at Hershey, the Kimball ladies still found a way to win, coming out on top 44-38 against a solid Hershey Panther club, but the Horns had to come from behind to...

  • Cluff fourth at Bridgeport

    Tom Southard|Dec 24, 2015

The Kimball High Wrestling Team took part in the Bridgeport/Sidney Tournament this past Saturday in yet another very strong, and talented gathering of the best that Western Nebraska has to offer. Kimball freshman, Jordan Cluff, at 106 pounds was the lone Longhorn grappler to place, finishing fourth in his weight class. Cluff won his match over Dillman of Mitchell by fall, and lost 3 matches including his match for third place. Garrett Pedersen at 113 pounds was 2-3 on the day winning his two...

A special salute to Kimball High senior Danika Daum this week as she continues to re-write the Kimball High girl’s basketball record book. After setting a new school record of 40 points in a single game a week back, this past week she reached yet another milestone for herself of going over the 1,000 career point mark. Her 15 points at Hershey left her right at 1,000 points and the following night at Bayard she poured in another 25. She now sits in third place on the school charts with Kayli Rageth holding the record of 1386 points set in 2...

  • DAUM SETS SCORING RECORD

  • Kimball girls rack up two more wins

    Tom Southard|Dec 17, 2015

The Kimball High girls remain undefeated at 4-0 after racking up two more wins this past week. The Lady Longhorns ran past Perkins County at Grant Friday evening 57-17 and handled visiting Morrill Saturday evening 70-48. A great weekend for the Kimball ladies, but especially for senior Danika Daum who set a new single game scoring record for Kimball with her 40 points against Morrill, taking over the top spot from Alisa Mueller who tallied 38 in the 1996-97 season. It was no contest at Grant Friday evening with the Kimball players, and fans,...

  • Kimball High wrestlers continue to battle

    Tom Southard|Dec 17, 2015

The Kimball High Wrestlers took part in the 50th annual Banner County Tournament this past Saturday but were missing three of their wrestlers for various reasons. Trevor Ryschon, at 126 pounds, finished fourth for the Longhorns top placing. Coach Wade Brashear commenting on the tournament said, "In the first round we didn't wrestle very well. We are hindered by youth and inexperience which gives us tough first round draws in the seeding. However, we continued to battle, picking up wins through...

Top story of the week is a new Kimball high single game scoring record by Danika Daum! The talented senior scored 40 points in leading her Lady Longhorn team to a win over Morrill, and now holds the new record after bettering Alisa Mueller's previous record of 38 set in the 1996-97 season. Of note, she was 18 of 22 at the foul line! Free throws will win ball games and help you set new scoring records as well! Also of interest, Danika's brother Mike, who is having an outstanding season of his...

  • Kimball boys win over Morrill

    Tom Southard|Dec 17, 2015

The Kimball High boys played Perkins County close on the road Friday night, losing 64-59, but came back strong Saturday on the home court to defeat Morrill 78-31. It was a good weekend for coach Luke Dea's Longhorns as they are showing improvement each time out as they adapt to the style of play the Kimball coaches are stressing this season. "We want to play an aggressive, fast pace style of basketball, on both offense and defense. With our lack of height, we need to really push the ball on offe...

Coach Wade Brashear's young and inexperienced...

  • KIMBALL BOYS FALL TO DUNDY COUNTY IN TITLE GAME

    Tom Southard|Dec 10, 2015

The Kimball High boys swept past McPherson County 68-20 in first round play of the Kimball Invitational Tournament this past weekend but fell to a scrappy Dundy County-Stratton team 67-48 in the championship game. The Dundy County-Stratton team had defeated Morrill 58-37 in their first round pairing. Coach Luke Dea was able to use everyone he suited giving his bench plenty of court time in the win over McPherson County. He got scoring out of ten players led by Jordan Greenwood with 16 as the junior hit 7/15 from the field including a pair of...

"Our young men wrestled the best they have this year. They went out and were very aggressive and tried some things we have been working on in practice. Zavyer White had his best tournament and won his bracket," Schnell said. Along with White's win, Todd Hunsaker was also 1st, Ethan Ratzlaff and Steve Bateman were 2nd, Scott Hunsaker was 2nd,...

    Tom Southard|Dec 3, 2015

The Kimball High girl's opened the basketball season with an impressive win over a very good Class B Scottsbluff team, coming out on top 68-63 in a very entertaining and close contest in the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame Exhibition Game played at the Kimball gymnasium this past Monday evening. Nebraska High Schools are allowed an exhibition game with the proceeds going to the Hall of Fame committee but this year the Kimball boys elected not to play a game with Scottsbluff. If the Lady Horns...
