  • Heeg opens golf season with win at Bayard

    Kimball's Henry Heeg opened his senior golf season with an individual win at the Bayard Tournament shooting a 77 to finish one stroke better than Bayard's Trae Blanco and three strokes better than Bayard's Roman Konvicka, both playing on their home course. It was a big win for Heeg as he has had limited time to prepare for the golf season as he was a starter and member of the Kimball High boy's basketball team that made it into the state tournament delaying their start to the spring sports...

  • Kimball High track team wins out at Creek Valley Invite

    The Kimball High Track Team brought home top team honors at last Friday's Tri State Track Meet held in Chappell. The Lady Longhorns won the female division with 149.5 points, well ahead of runnerup Bridgeport with 113 while the Kimball boys finished 4th in the male division with 91 points to give Kimball 240.5 points to win the combined team score division, edging out Bridgeport who finished runnerup with 236 points.     A total of 17 area teams including Kimball, Potter-Dix, and Banner County took part in the Bayard C-D Track Invite this past Saturday and the marks were very good as the athletes enjoyed unusual nice weather for this early season meet. The Kimball High tracksters for the most part showed big improvement with their times on the track over the opening Kimball Invite a week earlier and head coach Gene Mohr and distance coach Jim Reeves, were both quite happy with the results they were charting....

    The wrestling career for Kimball's most decorated wrestler ever is winding down, and what a career it has been. It all started back in Federation wrestling when Shawn was just a little bitty guy, and although he never got real big in stature, his accomplishments certainly did!     Mitchell captured the top team Invitational Track and Field meet took advantage of a fairly decent 10 new meet records. Mitchell claimed 6 of the new meet records including 4 in the girls' division as they edged out Kimball by a mere 9 points to win the team title with 155 points with Kimball runnerup with 146 followed by Pine Bluffs with 74, Hemingford 62, Banner County 47, and Minatare 10.   • Kimball boys equal most wins ever

    The Kimball High boys closed out their 2013-14 basketball season with a repeat trip to the state tournament after winning sub-district and district playoffs and equaled the most wins in a season ever as they went 22-4. The Longhorns were 22-1 in 1995-96, and 22-3 in 2010-11. This year's team also moved into third place for most points scored in a season with 1,520.     It was great to see that Jay Staehr, former outstanding Kimball High athlete, is still having success coaching as he directed his Overton boys into the championship game of the Nebraska state D-l division.     The 2013-14 season for the Kimball High girls' basketball team may not have played out quite like coach Chauncey Pedersen and his girls would have liked, but none the less, it was a winning season with 13 wins and 11 losses.     Kimball's season came to an end with a first round loss in the Nebraska State C-2 boy s' basketball tournament losing 49-46 to Freeman in a hard fought contest. It was a game that saw Kimball get out to a 16-12 lead at the end of the first period of play, all tied at 22-22 at half time, and Freeman on top by 1 point going into the fourth quarter with the score at 37-36 at the end of the third period.     Coaches of the Western Trails Conference have announced their selections for the all conference basketball teams and Kimball senior Mike Daum was named the boys' Most Valuable Player of the year. Senior team mate Jake Reader joins Daum on the all conference first team while juniors Colton Stull and Michael Ferguson were given honorable mention.     The future of the Kimball High Wrestling program is looking brighter and coach Wade Brashear is optimistic about the direction the program is going.     A tough week for the Kimball High girls as they suffered losses in their final two regular season games leaving them with a 12-10 record going into sub-district tournament play. On Friday night, in the final home game of the season, Kimball fell to a scrappy Hemingford club 56-52 after leading almost the entire contest.     Damian Rutledge battled his way to a fourth place finish in the 220 pound weight class at the C-4 District Wrestling Tournament held in Hershey this past weekend and is headed to the State Tournament in Omaha this weekend. They started out with a Tuesday night road win at Mitchell where they had to battle hard to pullout a 55-47 victory, had an easier night at home with Pine Bluffs Friday night coming out on top 78-54, but then lost on the road at Bridgeport Saturday 74-57.
