Imagine the excitement of opening night at the Goodhand Theatre in Kimball, May 1954, a night some may well remember – the smell of popcorn and the excited voices of the crowds waiting in line for tickets to see “Money from Home,” starring Dean Martin, Marjie Millar and Jerry Lewis. This scene may soon be repeated, like a favorite rerun, right here in Kimball. More than 60 years later the Goodhand Theatre is scheduled to re-open with the same movie, showing on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. “We enco...

I had the opportunity to attend a conference last week in Denver and I must be honest, I knew I would learn a lot, but I didn’t expect to have any fun (well, except for the shopping, the food, and the people-watching). With a conference name like Innovation and knowing so many of our extended team (specifically our own Patrick Cossel), I should have known that it would be anything but boring! Little did I know, however, that I would be meeting with some of the brightest, most creative and all-around greatest people in the industry. They are p...

When landscape artist Deb Salopek moved to Santa Fe, N.M., from Potter last fall, her little downtown Potter art studio sat empty. The empty space owned by the Potter Historical Foundation had been vastly renovated and used as a studio for five years. Though more work is needed to complete the renovations, the Foundation didn't want the room to remain empty. Enter Thomas, Potter-Dix's K-12 art teacher for the past 25 years. Because the school offers art classes and local youth have many options...

Imagine graduating high school having already earned college credits or high school credits in German, psychology, economics or medical terminology. That is a possibility at Kimball High School, according to Guidance Counselor Chauncey Pedersen. A variety of courses are offered locally, through distance learning, for which Kimball has no certificated teacher from high schools across Nebraska. This program allows students to take high school courses of interest during any regular school, but the system does not come without disadvantages....

An early childhood filled with music inspired one former Kimball graduate to make a career of singing and when you do what you love it really doesn't seem so much like work. Katie Warner, nee Hansen, said she has been singing as long as she can remember, first at home with her family all singing along. "I started piano lessons in the first grade and found that I loved learning about music as well," Warner said. "I also sang in the church choir for many years." As her passion for music grew, she...
The Last Supper Pageant will once again be presented during Holy Week and the Trinity United Methodist Church. Written by Ernest K. Emurieian, the play depicts the scene of the Last Supper painting by Leonardo da Vinci done in 1491 in a convent in Milan, Italy. I did follow up on a lead for a foreign language teacher. For jus...
Following graduation I had the opportunity to move to several cities in Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, Minnesota and Nevada. These moves happened every few months, and in preparation I would call the local Chamber of Commerce to learn as much as possible about the next town we would be calling home. The Chamber gave me information on rentals, hotels, trailer parks, businesses, and the general feel of the community. I was able to make contact with some of the most active and involved people in the town before I ever entered it, and that enabled me...

Until this past week, one should not have been able to find a hoof print, let alone a horseshoe, on Kimball’s Horseshoe Hill, as it was zoned R-2, for residential use only.
