    The elected offices in Kimball and Kimball County had a multitude of candidates filing prior to the deadline on Monday, March 2. The primary election will be May 12 and the general election Nov. 3. A full slate of individuals filed for the three seats that will be open on the Kimball School Board. Those recently filing are Chauncey G. Pedersen, Tom O’Brien, Albert Hargreaves, Maggie Laughlin, Jennifer Griebel, Lanny Little and Laura Perry. Previously filing were incumbents Carrie M.   • Child Abuse Trial Continues

    Day 2 of the child abuse trial continued this week in Kimball County District Court. Alexander Romero, 24, is charged with felony child abuse that was committed intentionally and resulted in death. Romero’s 7-month-old daughter died in April 2019. She was in the care of Romero when she became unresponsive and was taken to Kimball Health Services. The child was then transported to Children’s Hospital in Denver for treatment.     The Kimball Hospital Foundation’s second annual Casino Night at the Kimball Event Center drew about 180 people to support the foundation’s fundraising efforts to purchase a new heart defibrillator/monitor for use in the hospital emergency room. The event raised about $8,000 after expenses. Games offered by 16 total casino staff included blackjack roulette, craps and poker.     Dix residents celebrated the Re-Grand Opening of the Dix Post Office this past week with cookies and coffee. Post Office employees on hand included retailer Judy Petersen, Postmaster Karen Miller and Todd Case, manager of post office operations for the Central Plains District.     Interviews were conducted Tuesday for the new Kimball Junior/Senior High School principal. The position will be vacated in June by Mo Hanks.     The new alert system Panhandle Alert is up and running as of March 1, according to Linda Williams of the Kimball County Sheriff’s Office. The website boasts “Panhandle Alert is the official emergency notification system used to communicate with community residents during emergencies.” Williams said this alert system is significantly cheaper, faster and better than the last one.
