  • Thefts trending down; sheriff warns citizens to remain 'vigilant'

    Since the beginning of April, the Kimball County Sheriff's Office dispatch has received more than 20 reports of prowlers, suspicious vehicles or suspicious people. Calls concerning incidents inside city limits were referred to the Kimball Police Department. Six reporting parties called regarding suspicious people and vehicles, while theft was reported nine times and several callers followed up with additional concerns and information.   • Council declines planning commission recommendation, zones heavy industrial

    Despite the unanimous recommendation of the city’s planning commission on March 16, the Kimball City Council voted to zone a tract of land at 4351 E. Highway 30 for heavy industry at its meeting last week. The council zoned the property heavy industrial, with council member James Shields as the lone dissenting vote. The land was originally purchased by Don Gregory and the late Bruce Evertson, located east of Kimball along Highway 30 and north of what was once Castronics.     The Kimball City Council was presented with an updated policy regarding the Kimball Police Department canine program at its regularly scheduled meeting held April 7. Police Captain Andy Bremer presented the updated policy to the council in Chief Darren Huff’s absence.     The Kimball Board of Education voted unanimously to hire a third kindergarten teacher for the upcoming school year during its regularly scheduled meeting Monday night. After hearing from five educators on staff currently, the board agreed that the rising number of youngsters in class warranted the extra staff.     Both the Kimball and Banner County FFA had strong showings at the state competition held last week in Lincoln. The Kimball livestock evaluation team won a purple ribbon by finishing fourth overall among all teams at state.     A short-handed Banner County squad competed in the Chappell track meet held last Friday. Banner was without many of its team due to the state FFA conference, which was held last Wednesday through Friday in Lincoln.
