  • Review the original opening night movie at The Goodhand

    Tonia Copeland|Apr 28, 2016

Imagine the excitement of opening night at the Goodhand Theatre in Kimball, May 1954, a night some may well remember – the smell of popcorn and the excited voices of the crowds waiting in line for tickets to see “Money from Home,” starring Dean Martin, Marjie Millar and Jerry Lewis. This scene may soon be repeated, like a favorite rerun, right here in Kimball. More than 60 years later the Goodhand Theatre is scheduled to re-open with the same movie, showing on Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday. “We enco...

    Tonia Copeland|Apr 28, 2016

Prunty added that he had fielded a complaint about kenneling dogs, as well and broached the subject of licensing dog kennel businesses within city limits. The current ordinance limits the n...

  • Friends and Neighbors: Roger Gillming

    Dawn Fossand|Apr 28, 2016

Roger Gillming is a nonconformist when it comes to his role as retired after spending a total of forty years in homiletics, the study of composing and delivering a sermon, and helping with the American Red Cross. Once serving as the pastor for both Methodist churches, here and in Bushnell for more than a decade, Gillming thought he would like to have more free time with his wife, Schatzie, and their two grandsons, Aaron and Kip, who live in close proximity to the couple. Real retirement didn't...

  • Kimball FFA is in the house - the greenhouse, that is

    Dawn Fossand|Apr 28, 2016

Audrey Hepburn once said, "To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow." That very sentiment is echoed in the FFA Creed, "I believe in the future of agriculture," and enacted in the Kimball High School's Ag Greenhouse. This greenhouse enclosure was purchased in 2004 from Stuppy Manufacturing, according to Kimball's previous Ag Instructor, Alan Held, for around $38,000. It was then erected by local contractors in 2005, at an approximate cost of $26,000. Currently, as it was when first built, is...

  • Helen T. Selover Grubb

    Apr 28, 2016

Helen Theodora Selover Grubb was 17 when she scored 99 points to win the honor of Healthiest Girl in Kimball County and went on to compete in the state contest. Little did she know that she'd be around to tell the story 86 years later! She was always a leader and a teacher, teaching kindergarten through eighth grade students (often one student in each grade) for several years in rural Districts 28, 16 and 24--when she was right out of high school herself. Her students included her own sisters...

  • LTTE: Regarding the Kimball County Ambulance

    Daria Andersen-Faden|Apr 28, 2016

Patience is encouraged as fact finding on the ambulance precedes any action. Arriving at a hasty and poorly researched decision is not in the best interest of the residents of the county. Please be assured that I will pursue a well thought out approach to arrive at a solution that will be most beneficial tothe people of Kimball County. • Randomly Tonia

    Tonia Copeland|Apr 28, 2016

I had the opportunity to attend a conference last week in Denver and I must be honest, I knew I would learn a lot, but I didn’t expect to have any fun (well, except for the shopping, the food, and the people-watching). With a conference name like Innovation and knowing so many of our extended team (specifically our own Patrick Cossel), I should have known that it would be anything but boring! Little did I know, however, that I would be meeting with some of the brightest, most creative and all-around greatest people in the industry. They are p...

The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. Soon after graduating high school, Paula Stevens (Paula) was interested in doing something different, something exciting, and something like being away. She was in Lawrence, MA. She had an aunt that she respected and looked up to. The aunt liked the Navy and Paula thought she would like it as well....

  • Jock Talk

    Tom Southard|Apr 28, 2016

What a difference a day makes when it comes to weather and spring sports in Western Nebraska. Our Kimball golfers had a cold and dreary day at Grant this past week, then had a near perfect day at Scottsbluff on Monday. Didn’t matter as the Longhorns won both times out and now have three wins and two runner up finishes on the season. Our track team has had meets cancelled, rescheduled, and even had some good days. It was a good day this past Saturday at Morrill, but now they have to wait and see if the SPVA Meet in Imperial will go on as s...
