Third party appraisals, protests and refunds dominated the conversation at the June 7 Kimball County Board of Equalization meeting. At a previous BOE meeting, Kimball County Assessor Sherry Winstrom had requested the Board’s consideration to seek a proposal from Standard Appraisal for an independent, county-wide, third party assessment, at a cost of slightly under $100,000 as her duties were to set new cost tables for the county. The cost would cover assessments of all residential, commercial and agricultural building sites and properties. “As...
With no new resignations or retirements, the Kimball Public School District is now fully staffed following the approval of the board to hire Jordon Sukup for Kindergarten. “Currently we are full for 2016-2017 school year,” Kimball Superintendent of schools, Marshall Lewis, said. “No vacancies!” This after Lewis’s announcement during a previous board meeting that it could be a tough hiring year for the district. Kimball Public Schools business manager Harold Farrar is currently composing a list of new hires for the district. That informati...
Kim Sharples came to Kimball after her son moved his family here. With three grandchildren and a fourth on the way, Sharples stays active with her growing family, as well as her business, Earth Blessings Photography, and she has been a much-sought-after local volunteer since her arrival. "I have done a lot of volunteer work here," she said. "I've done stuff with the 4-H group and I was president of the Kimball Business Boosters for a year. I love to volunteer and help others." She has served on...
The Gotte Park was the venue last Saturday, June 4, for the inaugural Kimball Mountain Plover Festival. "Gotte Park was a great location for the event this year. The weather was ideal for this year's event," said Alie Mayes of the Rocky Mountain Bird Conservancy. "We had a turn out of around 40 participants and partners included Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Riverside Discovery Center, and Agate Fossil Bed National Monument." Included on the schedule for the day were tours to view the Moun...
As area youth begin preparing for the 4-H fair, a dozen attended a 4-H Livestock and Companion Animal Care, Grooming and Showing Clinic at the Kimball-Banner County Fairgrounds on June 1. We wanted to express our great appreciation for the services offered at the Information Center on Interstate 80 and we would like to have the people in your area know what a gem your community has in the Nebraska Visitor Center but also in the outstanding person that you have as the “face of your community”. We recently had the opportunity to be traveling through and were able to stop and visit with Jo Caskey at the Information Center. We had planned on stopping only a few minutes but we had to pull ourselves away and could very well have sta...
The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war. David C. Sundberg (Dave), from Red Wing, Minnesota, was recruited as a football player for the University of Nebraska. He came to Lincoln, NE to take advantage of that offer/scholarship. Within the first year, he was injured. The University of...

The Hole-in-one is one of the ultimate goals of all golfers, and according to the stat people, very few ever achieve this goal. Thanks to Greg Robinson, who gathered up a lot of information on the hole-in-one concerning the local Four Winds Golf Course, we are going to give you a few of our own stats, as well as some national figures, we thought you might find interesting. Way back when the Four Winds Course opened at it’s current location, the Western Nebraska Observer, owned by Bob Pinkerton at the time, started the tradition of having a...
Kimball’s Madison Biesecker has been a busy young lady last week and again this week as she participates in All Star athletic events she was honored to be selected to perform in. This past weekend she was at North Platte Mid Plains College on Thursday and Friday to play in their All Star Basketball game. As the players rotated in and out she got about 14 minutes of court time, scored 2 points on two free throws, and played some solid defense and ball handling. She missed out on the Friday practice sessions for the Panhandle Prep All Star G...
