The Western Nebraska Observer, an award-winning powerhouse decades ago, has rejoined the state’s elite weekly newspapers. The Observer won seven awards – including first place statewide for General Excellence in its class – in the Nebraska Press Association’s 2021 Better Newspaper Contest. The Beard family trio of Dan, wife Dana and daughter Allison figured it was time to head west on a 1,500 mile genealogy road trip. Their destination was Kimball, Nebraska. Dan Beard described the adventure. "We have visited Indiana twice on genealogy road trips, and after a COVID break for a year, now we are on our first trip back," he said. The annual Potter CarBowl returns this weekend with a loaded “Friday Night Rev Up” lineup and nonstop, morning-to-evening events on the big Saturday schedule. Kimball County 4-H member Allie Cook, 8, center, entered her market hog and market goat in the annual FFA Alumni Progress Show this past week. Good morning Banner County! We started this week out with a better attitude, at least around our house, due mostly to a couple of cooler days and some much needed rain. We had close to an inch of rain Sunday evening with a little small hail. The latest Yard of the Week award goes to Betty Burback. In 1975, 46 years ago, the Burbacks moved to their location just north of Kimball. When they moved into the farmhouse, the only thing there was prairie, so Betty created the yard complete with trees, bushes (Dwarf Alberta Spruce), loads of beautiful flowering peonies and a gazebo. Shirley Ann (Dickerson) Adels passed away on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at her home in Arkansas with her family present. Shirley was born August 18, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska and lived on a family farm in Auburn until she was in the 3rd grade. From there they moved to California for a year, before settling in Kimball, Nebraska where she went to school from 5th grade through her graduation in 1952 from Kimball County High School. Melba J. Hendee, who lived most of her life in Potter, Sidney and Scottsbluff, Nebraska, died June 16, 2020. She was 89. Cremation has been held. A memorial service and celebration of Melba’s life will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, June 25, 2021 at the Prairie West Church in Potter, NE with Pastor Warren Cico officiating. Greg Robinson's team not only won the Father's Day tournament at Four Winds Golf Course, but according to Greg, it is the "best weekend of the year when I get to play with the boys." The Championship Flight of the annual Father's Day Golf Tournament at Four Winds Golf Course was a tight finish as local teams dominated the top three spots. Nora Robinson grabbed all the lows during Week 1 of the Kimball Women’s Golf Association League play. She had low gross with a 46, low net with a 30, and even had low putts with only 16 total. Shellon Anderson also had just 16 putts, which tied her with Nora. Sally Plover scored a birdie on the sixth hole.
