Though she neared 101 years of age on Aug. 21, 2017, Kimball's Maxine James was able to watch a total solar eclipse for the first time. Maxine celebrated her birthday early, she turns 101 on September 11, by watching the "once-in-a-lifetime" event with family. The City of Kimball annual seal coat street improvement project is expected to begin Sept. 11 through Sept. 18 depending on the contractor’s schedule and the weather. Harold Duane Carlson, Jr., age 64 of Kimball, passed away at Great Plains Health on Friday September 1, 2017. Harold was born on Sept. 4, 1952 in North Platte to Harold Duane and Shirley Jean (Beavers) Carlson, Sr. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1971 and served in the US Army from 1971 thru 1974. The Kimball softball and baseball fields are in need and the Kimball Baseball Board is teaming up with the Red Knights to raise the necessary funds with a Poker Run ending at Beer and Loathing. When they bought the house, Don and Sherry Olson had two large old pine trees. Sherry said that when the wind blew one of them out into the street, they had the other removed. They replaced those trees with two different ones, using the tree grant money available in Kimball. Each year they continue improving on their outdoor space, adding borders to the garden beds, finding unique yard art and, just this year, installing automatic underground sprinklers. Kimball Lady Longhorns hosted their first volleyball match of the season this past Thursday night, Aug. 31, when Bridgeport came to town. Bridgeport won sets one and two, and were looking like they would come away with a third, but Kimball took set number three of four to keep the Lady Bulldogs in town for a little longer. The Banner County Lady Wildcats opened their season at home on Friday, Aug.25, against the Cody-Kilgore Cowgirls. Sets began with the junior varsity teams facing off for a quick three sets that ended the JV season opener with a 3-0 loss for the Lady Cats with varsity play immediately following. With a couple very nice days this past week the Lady Longhorn Golfers got into action again but were able to play on their home course this time. A turnout of 18 golfers participated in Sunday’s One-Person Scramble held at the Four Wind Golf Course, and Mitch Brown emerged the winner with his round of 53, using a 100% handicap system for all golfers. Dustin Bowron was runner-up with his round of 54 with Dave Lukassen 3rd with the same score of 54 and Doran Bush was 4th with 55.
