    The Smithsonian Institute, in cooperation with Humanities Nebraska, is sponsoring the exhibit "Crossroads: Change in Rural America." The Plains Historical Society of Kimball County was selected, from among many applicants, to be the first community in the Nebraska to host this exhibit.     The Flowerfield School experience has been a right of passage for Panhandle fourth-graders since 1987. Flowerfield School is part of the Banner County Museum complex located in Harrisburg, just 25 miles north of Kimball. Although the daily scheduling and organization are done by ESU #13 in Scottsbluff, about 30 schools participate in the annual experience.     The first Kimball County Commissioners board meeting of September on Tuesday addressed public hearings, roads, budgets and inventories for the county. County Zoning Administrator Sheila Newell briefly explained that the Kimball County Planning Commission met and recommended approval for the conditional permit application of Dale Critchfield of Real Western Wings.     On Aug. 31, Judge Derek Weimer of Sidney was invited to sit with the Nebraska Supreme Court. Judge Weimer is the district judge of the 12th District, which includes Kimball, Cheyenne and Banner counties, and nine other Panhandle counties. There are seven justices on the Nebraska Supreme, including Chief Justice Mike Heavican and six associate justices.     Melvin C. Fornstrom, 87, of Pine Bluffs died at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Pine Bluffs with Father Kevin Koch officiating. Burial was in the Pine Bluffs Cemetery.     Longhorns cross country returns to Four Winds Golf Course this Friday to host the annual Kimball Invitational. The meet follows the local XC team’s meet last Saturday at Gering.     Lady Longhorns Seek First Win Kimball’s Lady Longhorn volleyball team went 0-4 on the new season as they headed into Tuesday’s matchup this week at Bridgeport to face the home team and Garden County.     The Four Winds Women's Golf Association's undisputed race horse winners were Donna Linn and Susie Abramson. With steady nerves and great putting, it took only five holes for them to eliminate all their competition.     The Sioux County Warriors traveled to Potter on Friday for their first game of the season against the D6 powerhouse Potter-Dix Coyotes, and had no answers for the overwhelming Coyotes offense and defense.     The first annual P2P Antelope Stampede will occur on Sept. 18. The Antelope Stampede is an open event bike race on mostly gravel roads. Jon Heidemann, the event director, had initially planned to have this race two years ago, but due to COVID the event was put on hold. The Antelope Stampede bike race will have three options – 100 miles, 54 miles and 25 miles rides.
