Kimball will be celebrating Farmers Day weekend from Sept. 24-26, and the theme describes Kimball to a tee – Small Town Roots and Cowboy Boots. Area concerns for COVID-19 are rising as the state of Nebraska and Gov. Pete Rickets have announced the state COVID dashboard will be reinstated beginning this week. On Monday, the Unified Command confirmed 223 more cases of the virus in the Panhandle over the past seven days, including all ages. The northern Panhandle recorded 76 cases, Scotts Bluff area 119 cases, and the southern Panhandle 28, according to the Panhandle Public Health District. Good morning! I sincerely hope this week is fire-free. The fire that was in Scottsbluff County last week caused more damage and more smokey air for us to breathe. We are several miles away and yet Thursday evening from our deck we could see a huge orange glow that didn’t seem all that far away. Have you ever wondered how the area fires receive their names? It is not alphabetical like hurricanes. According to Ron Leal, director of Region 21 Emergency Management, the naming of the fire is up to the incident commander. Leal said all larger wild land fires are named, usually named using the closest landmark. An excited 14-year-old Ella Kearney-Turner from Colorado rode in her first 25-mile bike race, the Antelope Stampede. Her brother finished first in the 25-mile race, and she finished just behind him on Saturday morning in Kimball. The 25-mile race was the most popular, with a few riders going 50 miles and two individuals riding 100 miles. A strong start and a big second quarter by the Potter-Dix Coyotes was too much for the visiting Crawford Rams to overcome, and the Coyotes moved their record to 3-0 with a big 65-25 win Friday night in Crawford.
