SIDNEY-Several state senators were in Sidney on Tuesday for a Natural Resources Committee interim hearing. The hearing was part of two studies prompted by Legislative resolutions passed last session. A resolution introduced by Sen. Ken Haar seeks to examine a process for shuttering the Sidney-based Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and transferring its duties to other agencies. A separate resolution, introduced by Sen. John Stinner, calls for a study into the oil and gas commission's...
The Kimball County Sheriff's Office and Kimball's Emergency Medical Services responded to a call at approximately 2:20 p.m. Tuesday of a collision between a tractor and a train 2 miles east of Kimball just off U.S. Hwy. 30. Initially, the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department was also dispatched, but that call was canceled as it was determined unnecessary. The driver, Raul Buanteo Sr., was uninjured and is pictured on the left with Michael Reuter, the owner of the tractor, and Raul Buanteo Jr. "The...
For nearly a year the Village of Dix has been operating without one of its three water wells. The village’s back-up water well, drilled in 1954, succumbed to erosion sometime last fall. “Sargeant Irrigation came out and we had them run a camera down it,” said village clerk Sharon Villareal. “I think that was early spring, like March. We went through the whole summer without it.” The main well, drilled in 1964 and relocated in 1971, has been keeping up with demand to date. However, Villareal is unsure how much longer that will be the case. “We...
After 25 years, Tim and Pam Anderson are retiring from the Farmers Day parade committee. "When we first moved to town Barb and Shorty Staab were running the parade and he had done it for well over 20 years, and he thought it was time that he started to step down and let younger blood come in," Tim said. The Andersons purchased the local H & R Block from the Staabs and the two families became like one, Tim said. So, as seems to be the custom, the elders bequeathed the duties to their younger...
A facelift design for the underpass has been chosen. The Kimball city council voted for the first concept and the least expensive one at its Sept. 15 meeting. Three concepts were initially presented, although there were few differences between the three. Though it is the least pricey of the three concepts presented this summer, the chosen concept features a curb and retaining wall with more native grasses. All the designs presented retained a vast amount of the limestone currently used along...

The Kimball County Commissioners approved a lengthy set of specifications for the potential purchase of an ambulance at last week’s meeting. The specifications approved number more than 80 pages and may be viewed by contacting the county clerk’s office. The specifications are so long because of the amount of detail in them, according to county ambulance director Carla Goranson. “Of course these are down to the measurement of how many inches from here to this cabinet,” she said. “It tells you exactly where each flashing light is going to be, it...
A pursuit that started in Wyoming last Wednesday, Sept. 16, ended in Nebraska after troopers use stop sticks to disable the vehicle. Just after 3 p.m., Nebraska law enforcement was alerted by the Wyoming Highway Patrol that they had discontinued a pursuit of a 2005 gray Explorer at the state line. The driver of the vehicle who was believed to be armed was wanted on a warrant out of Laramie County for Stalking. The vehicle entered Nebraska eastbound on I-80 where the Kimball County Sheriff’s Office and the Kimball Police Department picked up the...
Sunny, warm to hot days. Crisp mornings. Cool evenings. September is here. Autumn is knocking on the seasonal door. Fall reminds us that much colder weather is on the way. Succulent peaches and pears will be canned for a cold winter day. Bright purple beets will be pickled for a tangy treat. Green beans will be harvested and canned for future use, p...
While the traffic and construction may be a headache with the growth of Sidney and surrounding areas, one good side effect is a lower tax levy required by the South Platte Natural Resources District (SPNRD) to fulfill its budget needs. For the third straight year the final tax levy is lower than the previous year, this year down 9.59 percent to .051335 per $100 of actual valuation. This means that the owner of a house that is valued for tax purposes at $100,000 would pay $51.34 in annual taxes to the SPNRD. Last year the same levy cost $56.78...

After a hiatus last year, the demolition derby is back. The demolition derby will be held during Farmers Day at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kimball County Fairgrounds. According to Doug Lukassen and Mark Vowers, event coordinators, the derby last year was canceled due to the timing of the Oktoberfest derby the following weekend. “The Ag Society and I felt we couldn’t compete with the Oktoberfest purse last year,” Vowers explained. Vowers sent interested parties the rules, classes and other pertinent information and publicized the event throughout th...
For most everyone, Farmers Day offers entertainment, a chance to catch up with old friends, and even make some new acquaintances. But, really, everybody loves a parade. For parade organizers, including Sandy Dominguez, the Farmers Day parade is a months-long process fueled by a desire to get everything just right for the enjoyment of the crowd. Dominguez has coordinated the parade line-up for at least the last seven years, when she was bequeathed the volunteer position by Steve Brown. With decreasing volunteers, she takes on increasing responsi...
After 30 years of organizing the Farmers Day Fun Run, Pat O’Brien passed the baton to Kimball High School cross country coach Tiffany Johnson. Johnson has coordinated the event for the last four years. O’Brien gave Johnson all the information she needed to take the event and run with it, including where to order bib numbers and medals. Johnson does not do it all on her own, though, as she has relied on partnerships throughout the community and a group of close friends. “The fire hall has been very nice in allowing us to use their space. The c...

We are looking forward to preparing for Bayard this week and working hard to get our first win of the year.” Kimball (0-4) received the opening kickoff to start the game. After n...
Banner County fought down to the wire in all three games Thursday night against Guernsey-Sunrise. The Lady Wildcats had the lead or were tied in all three games before ultimately falling to the Lady Vikings by scores of 25-22, 28-26 and 25-22. "Close games like (Thursday) are always tough to lose. Both teams obviously fought hard in every set, point by point," Banner coach Bethany Cooper said.
