By all accounts the blizzard of 1949 was a history maker and a monster. For a young teacher in her first year in Kimball, January 1949 offered the opportunity to learn. That young teacher, Dorothy Christiansen, lived with the Lewellen family while in Kimball, though her home was in Wheatland, Wyo. at the time. She recalled going home for a visit and was returning to Kimball for the start of classes in the new year. "I went to Cheyenne early and had stayed on with some friends," Christiansen...
Dix residents lost their post office this week, with services temporarily suspended effective Wednesday, Dec. 30, and with just days notice. According to Dix Postmaster, Kay Atkins, she did not receive enough time to pass on the written notice to customers in a more timely manner. In fact, the only written notice was dated Dec. 23, 2015, however, printed notices were posted in the community prior to the notice received by mail. A deteriorating building with possible mold issues was to blame for...
Staying involved has always been a priority for lifetime Kimballite Jason Lockwood, who continually challenges himself to do more. "Inertia is a wonderful mechanism," he said. "Things in motion tend to stay in motion and I suppose I am one of those things always on the go." Born to Jim and Teresa Lockwood, his family has farmed and ranched in Kimball County for four generations. His paternal grandmother, Wilma has lived her entire life in the Bushnell area and farmed there along side her husband...
8 was a banner year for lodging tax in Nebraska, reaching a record amount and boosting the Tourism Commission's cash funds, according to a recent news release from the Nebraska Tourism Commission. From January through October the Tourism Commission collected more than $4.5 million statewide, an increase of nearly 9 percent over last year and breaking all previous records. That total accounts for one percent of the total collected at lodging establishments throughout the state. Funds are then...
The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality assigned Panhandle Geotechnical and Environmental the task of completing a physical inspection and environmental assessment on the parking lot of the Kimball County Annex building at 209 East 3rd Street. During the 1950s and into the 1960s the property housed underground fuel tanks that are believed to have been last used in the 70s. According to Brian Hilbert, Project Manager and Environmental Scientist with PG&E, the tanks were removed in 1994,...

Winter storms brought plenty of snow, wind and cold to the streets (and sidewalks) of Kimball. As a native of Kimball, I was prepared. I readied myself with a hat, scarf and gloves, to go out into the frigid temperatures at 6:30 in the morning. Okay, first I had only to face the cold of my garage, and at 34, it was cold. I carefully made my way to work. On with my mission - snow removal on the sidewalks at the Western Nebraska Observer. Once at work, I readied myself further, gathering the snow shovel, ice melt and broom. Okay, first I made...
The Kimball High boys are adapting to the fast paced style of basketball that coach Luke Dea and his staff are wanting them to play, and despite a lack of height, the Horns are 3-and 3 at the Christmas break. Almost every time out they are facing teams with more height, but they make up for it by playing a pressure type defense, moving the ball fast on offense, and taking their shots, with a bevy of good shooters. The Horns have scored 357 points and are averaging 59.5 points per game. They...
Coach Chauncey Pedersen saw one of his Christmas wishes come true as his Kimball High girls are 6-0 at the Holiday Break! Now,after an extended break, the Lady Horns returned to practice this week getting ready for a tough return with three games in a row beginning January 7-8-9. The January 7 game is at Sidney against a strong Class B school, then a road trip to face a very good Mitchell team the next night and finally a home game on January 9 with Chase County coming to town. A couple of days...
Good bye 2015 and Hello 2016. You sports fans have had a short break, along with all of our area high school coaches and athletes, but now it is time to usher in the new year and get back to work. All Nebraska high school athletes were to have an NSAA Moratorium where they would not practice for five days from December 23 to December 28. This means that our local programs got back to practicing this past Monday and they will return to action January 7. The Kimball High wrestlers will be on the home mats hosting the Western Trails Conference Tou...
