Potter-Dix junior Thomas Muldoon finally got the Coyotes on the board with a three-point hit, then followed it with another three-pointer f...

Well good morning Banner County, friends and neighbors! Much better looking out this window this week. • Potter-Dix Girls, Boys Beat Peetz

    Mike Motz, The Observer|Feb 18, 2021

Potter-Dix’s Coyote Basketball teams hosted the Peetz Bulldogs on a frigid night last Tuesday, but it was more likely the Bulldogs’ delayed start to the season that caused the cold shooting of the visitors rather than the weather. The girls teams matched up first, and the Lady Bulldogs were just what the Lady Coyotes needed to earn their first win of the year over a team other than Creek Valley. Potter-Dix is now 3-16 for the season. The Lady Coyotes built a lead and continued to pull away, playing good aggressive defense and limiting the...

Sedgwick County started fast and put up 25 points before the Lady Coyotes put up a score of their own, pressuring the Potter-Dix squad into...

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, the Lady Longhorns hosted Potter-Dix, another struggling team, and the Lady Coyotes inability to score was exactly what Kimball needed to end its losing streak. Kimball started fast in the first quarter. The Lady Longhorns defense blocked lanes, caused turnovers and gave the Potter-Dix squad no uncontested shots. After building a 22-8 lead after...

  • Longhorn Boys Still In Search Of First Victory

    Mike Motz, The Observer|Jan 21, 2021

Kimball’s Longhorn basketball team is still searching for its first win of the season after a rough week against three tough opponents. Potter-Dix’s Lady Coyotes basketball team dropped a contest to the visiting Leyton Lady Warriors last Friday in a rescheduled and shortened evening of hoops since the boys game was cancelled due to COVID concerns. With Kimball sports also on hold until January, at least at this point, the Potter-Dix girls game was the area’s only varsity basketball game all week. The Lady Coyotes had been playing better under new Head Coach Shannon Wintholz and faced a limited Leyton team very short on players. But the players Leyton did bring were experienced,...

  • KIMBALL'S CELEBRITY

    Daria Anderson-Faden, The Observer|Dec 10, 2020

In the Panhandle and especially in our local Kimball area, celebrities are hard to find, almost impossible to find. But one local individual was a celebrity and lived right here among us and interacted with us on a daily basis. Oh, "our celebrity" didn't even know he was an area celebrity, but he was and always will be in our hearts and minds. Tom Southard was "our celebrity, Kimball's celebrity." He knew almost everyone and everyone knew him, his personality, dedication to sports, to the commun...

  • TOM SOUTHARD

    Jim Orr, The Observer|Dec 10, 2020

Last year, back in the late summer of 2019, the Observer was in need of a sportswriter. Tom Southard, the face of Observer sports since 1964, wanted to finally retire. Or at least scale back his writing a good bit and stay out of the cold covering football. So the search was on. The search for someone to succeed Tom. Not replace Tom. Succeed him. Nobody replaces a legend. As it turned out, nobody succeeded him. The job remained open as football season was kicking off. So Tom did what he had...
