    The final two spellers at the Kimball Spelling Bee, Andrew Hawthorne and Aundrea Christiansen, battled back and forth with words such as "homeopathic," "ballast," "hematology" and "mercenaries." Finally, seventh grader Andrew spelled "conjugate" correctly to achieve his dream since 4th grade, winning the spelling bee.     The public hearing for the 1/6 Year Road Plan for Kimball County road department was set at the Kimball County Commissioners meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21. The public hearing has been set for March 21 at 9:15 a.m. The plan will be available at the road department or the clerk’s office by Thursday, Feb. 23. One item that could potentially be on the 1/6 Year Plan is the repair or replacement of seven miles of oil road south of Dix.     Potter-Dix FFA began the new school year with a new advisor, Miss Monica Wasielewski. The Officer team began a new tradition of feeding the local farmers at the Kimball and Potter elevators.     LB 712, known as Create the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent Deployment Fund, was introduced by Sen. Brian Hardin of 48th District that includes the Kimball area. Sen.     The City of Kimball and Keep Kimball Beautiful received more than $172,000 in grants to combat waste and litter reduction and help with recycling and scrap tire cleanups. Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy announced $7 million in grants to 140 different projects throughout the state.   • A Look At Golf Pro Chad Wise's Career

    As a junior in high school at Lincoln East, Chad Wise was offered a full-ride scholarship to play golf at the University of Nebraska. On his way to the signing at the university, Wise was involved in a 34-car pile-up on 70th Street in Lincoln. Wise received injuries to his back and left knee. After his recovery, Wise played his senior year at Lincoln East but could not play collegiate golf after the car accident.     Superintendent Trevor Anderson’s annual report released at the school board meeting on Monday, Feb. 13, revealed successful NSCAS Performance Data for the 2021-22 school year. Based on proficiency percentages, the English scores for Kimball students in grades 3-8 and 11 were significantly better than the Nebraska state average in five out of the seven grades.
