Fall sports season has arrived for the Kimball Longhorns, Banner County Wildcats and Potter-Dix Coyotes. The Kimball Longhorn football team is making a splash this season. During football camp in early August, the team trained in the Kimball City Pool for a different type of workout. The 2024-25 softball season will be exciting for Kimball High School freshman JaLeigh Bohac. After the Kimball School Board negotiated a cooperative arrangement with Gering Public Schools, JaLeigh will begin her high school softball career with Gering High School. She will attend daily practices after her school day in Kimball. Conditioning for Gering starts Aug. 5. The Nebraska high school softball season runs until Oct. 5. The team of Darrin Lonsdale, Sean Dunegan, Kelly Dunegan and Tim Staab took first place with a 15-under-par 57 in the Kimball Hospital Foundation Golf Classic last Saturday at Four Winds Golf Course in Kimball. Kimball Longhorn head football coach Darrell Howitt said he was "super excited" for the season and said it is "always great to get on the field." Nebraska high school state steer wrestling champion Wyatt Reichenberg of Banner County added an eight-place world finish to his record at this month's National High School Rodeo finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming. There were 13 performances total for Nationals. Six performances made up go-arounds 1 and 2 and then the final performance was the short-go. Twenty golfers at the 15th annual Vince's Corner Golf Tournament won the chance to chip from 100 yards out on hole 16, and the winner of the contest would take home a golf cart donated by the Panhandle Auto Group. Jeff Greenwood chipped within 3 feet of the cup to take home the golf cart. Kimball trap team members gather for a group photo during this past week's national competition at Mason, Michigan. Nolan Cook became the first Kimball student to qualify for the individual national finals by hitting 98 of 100 targets. He hit 98/100 in the finals to finish 66th of 1,800 competitors. Julia Winstrom of Kimball is a team member of the 4-H National Shooting Sports Champions for Air Rifle. She also put up top 10 performances in multiple individual categories. She was selected as one of four Nebraska youth to participate in the 4-H National Shooting Sports Championship at Grand Island. The competition was held the last week of June. High School bull rider Cody Brinkman is headed to the National High School Rodeo finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming, from July 12-21. Cody's third place finish in the Nebraska State Rodeo finals qualified him to ride at the national event. For the second year in a row, Cody has qualified for nationals, and last year he placed fourth at state. Tough news for the girls basketball and volleyball teams for next year as Addison Olsen tore her ACL while playing basketball in Texas a few weeks ago. The Longhorn standout had surgery on Tuesday in Fort Collins, Colo., and her estimated time of recovery is six to eight months. Good news, according to Addison, is that this won’t be her senior years, and the injured foot isn’t the one that she high jumps off of. She will miss the volleyball and basketball seasons for sure, but she will be rooting for the team from the bench....
Banner County's Wyatt Reichenberg is the two-time Nebraska High School Rodeo Steer Wrestling Champion. Wyatt competed at the state finals June 10-12 in Burwell. The Harrisburg cowboy had a total of 132 points. State finals was two rounds and a short go. Wyatt had a time of 6.07 in Round 1, but broke the barrier in the second round with a 14.03. The Men's Thursday Night Golf League had a great turnout, great scores, and beautiful weather at the annual Father's Day golf tournament. League president Randy Bohac announced prizes and winners. The second annual Red/White Classic Golf Tournament on Saturday June 8 raised more than $40,000 for the Kimball Longhorns athletic programs.
