    JaLeigh Bohac of Kimball threw the discus 111 feet, 5 inches, to win a state championship and set a new eighth grade record during the state junior high Nebraska Champions Meet in Gothenburg. JaLeigh, who bettered the old record by 6 feet that Laurie Shadegg set in 1972, also plays softball on a Cheyenne traveling team during the summer and fall months. Junior high pole vaulter Brayden Fuss also represented Kimball at the state meet and vaulted 8 feet, 6 inches....

    In a one-hole playoff, Kyler Lusche took first at the District golf meet Monday in North Platte. And with a third-place team finish, the entire Kimball golf team will play at the State meet next Tuesday and Wednesday at North Platte Lake Mahoney. The Longhorns shot 374. According to Kimball golf coach Chuck Christensen, Lusche shot an 80 on a challenging North Platte course. Christensen said it was "set up really tough."     The Kimball Longhorn golf team took first in both the WTC and the Kimball Invite last Friday with Kyler Lusche leading the pack. Lusche talked about the highlights: "My chipping, my wedges were the best. I couldn't really hit any good drivers but made up for it with chipping. I didn't really have any bad chips, left me short putts." He said the greens were a little slower, but he was able to land the ball closer to the hole.     The Kimball and Pine Bluffs trap teams got together for a friendly "border war" on April 28, with 22 shooters from Kimball and 14 from Pine shooting two rounds in Kimball. They were mixed teams with shooters from both communities forming each team. The top three Kimball shooters were Teague Mazza with 46 points and Grace Anderson and Nolan Cook with 45 points each.     The Kimball Dead Eyes Shooters 4-H club took home gold and silver medals at the 2024 Nebraska State 4-H BB Gun and Air Rifle Championships on April 20 and 21 in Grand Island. The Sporter Air Rifle team of Julia Winstrom, Karsyn Chesley, Ainslie Hottell and Chris Foster took first-place honors with a team score of 1,999.     Seventh-grader Breckyn Kiefer crushed her own pole vault height at Best of the West last week. As the only seventh-grader competing against eighth-graders, Breckyn tied for second place with a vault of 7 feet, 6 inches, in the prestigious meet.     Longhorns golfer Kyler Lusche had a good week on the links last week, rounding into form before this week’s play at Four Winds Golf Course here in Kimball. Lusche won the SPVA Golf Tournament at Sutherland, shooting 75, after carding an even par 72 that earned him second at the Scottsbluff Invite.     Kimball Longhorn Kyler Lusche shot an even par 72 at the Scotts Bluff Country Club Invite on Monday and finished second only to Tommy Dredla of Scottsbluff, who shot a 3 under par 69. The Kimball team placed 11th against some tough competition, including Scottsbluff, Gering, Sidney, Ogallala, Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne East.     The Kimball Longhorn golf team placed third at the Bridgeport Invite on Friday. Top finishers for Kimball were Kyler Lusche with an 85 for fifth place. Right behind Lusche was Connor Deboodt in sixth place, also with an 85. The team continues to improve in giant leaps.     Chance Johnson, 10, son of Tiffany and Ryan Johnson of Kimball, competed at the Nebraska USA State meet in Grand Island on March 13. The past week the teams saw action at the Mitchell Invitation and the Tri-State Meet at Creek Valley in Chappel.     Kimball’s Kyler Lusche finished second at the Sidney Invite on April 3 with a four over par 76. He was the only Longhorn to finish in the top 10. The Kimball team placed seventh with a 116.     Kimball schools Superintendent Trevor Anderson has added the role of boys basketball coach to his responsibilities. Basketball and coaching are in his blood. His head coaching record at Battle Creek, a Division C2 school near Norfolk, was 86-52 over five seasons from 2013-14 to 2017-18.
