With weather predications mostly in the 60 degree range this week it sure does not feel like December--which is fine by me, other than I really want some moisture.

Sort of like wanting my cake and eating it too!

I also still have a few things that need taken care of outside that the good old wind has kept me from getting finished. Maybe this week.

I talked to my sister in Wyoming the other day and she is having a terrible time getting into the Christmas Spirit. Personally, I think part of that is the fact that the economic part of the holiday has over-loaded us as consumers. Before the Halloween garb is taken off the shelves we are being bombarded with Christmas trees, stuff, and more stuff. As Thanksgiving draws nearer, we are seldom encouraged by these same stores, to be thankful for anything. Instead we are pushed to buy stuff and more stuff…in the name of Christmas. If they would just stop all of the early sales junk and let us actually enjoy each holiday separately maybe the anticipation that I remember as a child would gradually be built back into Christmas, plus the true meaning of the season.

Just maybe more than my sister would not have any trouble getting into the spirit of Christmas, because the spirit of Christmas would have time to get into us!

Activities last week included the District One Act competition which was held early on November 27 at Hyannis. The students did very well, receiving Runner Up for their play, “After Hours.” Eight actors from our school were recognized for their performance: Noah Huber, Haliegh White, Ben Hostetler, Cody Scott, Rebecca Brenner, Bryce Olsen, Garrett Grubbs and Abby Russell. Congratulations to each of you and to Ms. Leffers for a job well done!

Winners of the Coloring Contest held recently by the Kimball-Banner County Chamber of Commerce included six (of eight total) from Banner County School. Winning either 1st or 2nd place were : Logan Moravec, Abby Bazan, Delanne Stauffer, Halsey Clark, Carollyn Kelly and Jacob Parsons. Great job kids!

Sunday, December 2, was the beginning of the Christmas season in Kimball. The Community Theater presented “A Christmas Reading” at the museum at 5 p.m. We had intended on seeing this, but were running a little late, so had to let it go. The parade was not very long, but the weather could not have been better, and the floats were all terrific. One local Banner County gal, Jacque Stauffer, was in a lighted up carriage, drawn by two leaping…or galloping horses. Very, very nice. We also visited with Gary Hall who many of you know and miss seeing here in the county. The Parade of Lights was at 6 p.m. and Santa was available at 7 p.m. The chili cook off was also in progress at the Eagles, with hot bowls of chili and cornbread served to the public.

Coming up this week, the 4-H Sewing Club will meet after school Friday, December 7. The girls will meet in the school cafeteria from 3:30-5:30. They need bring only their 4-H sewing books. Snacks will be provided.

The big girls will have their quilting class that same evening, same place. They will meet at 6:30 p.m. and go until they get tired! No snacks will be provided. Darn.

The next morning, Saturday December 8, the Wildcat wrestling team will host area schools in an all day meet. The competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. Good luck to each of you!

Also on this date the BeeHaven farm Roadside Market will be hosting their Victorian Christmas Market. The event will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. They will have an indoor Artisan Market, hayrides, food, fresh trees, Santa and much more. There will also be live music, part of which will be Deb and Tim Nolting, who many of us have enjoyed. Other local musicians will also take part. Down south in Kimball on December 8, the Kimball Public Library will have a movie for kids K-5. It is rated G and will begin at 1 p.m. Admission is one item of canned goods per person. The food collected will go to the Food Pantry.

Monday, December 10, is the date of the monthly school board meeting. The board will meet in the school cafeteria at 7 p.m. and everyone is encouraged to attend. Wednesday, December 12, the junior high girls and boys basketball team will be traveling to Gering to compete with Community Christian. I do not have the time for this one so please call the school at 436-5262.
