Daum tallies 12 three-pointers in Vegas tournament showing last week

Big men aren’t supposed to be able to shoot.

Someone forgot to tell Mike Daum.

In the third game of the Las Vegas Classic Bigfoot Tournament last week, Daum hit 12-of-16 three-point attempts, en route to a 38 point, nine rebound tally - leading his team to a 73-51 win.

He was joined for the final tournament of the summer by fellow Kimball athletic standout Jake Reader, who filled a roster spot vacated by a Sidney player who suffered an ankle injury.

The Las Vegas tournament is the last week for NCAA coaches to observe high school players across the country. It is also one of the largest tournaments of the summer, with over 250 players in the 17-age group alone.

The Rocky Mountain Fever opened the tournament with a game against a “Fastbreak Sports” club out of California.

In a competitive matchup, the Fever came out on top, by a final of 70-64. Daum led all scorers with a hot hand from the floor, collecting 31 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Reader added “stellar defense” against opposing players who had size on him.

The next game in the tournament, which ran from July 24 to July 28, placed the Fever against the El Paso Titans, out of El Paso, Texas.

Despite a slow start to the game, the Fever got things rolling and bounced back to put together a 63-48 win. Daum tallied just nine points, but pulled down a staggering 14 rebounds.

Reader added four points and five rebounds of his own.

Continuing the theme of Lone Star State showdowns, the Rocky Mountain Fever continued their tournament play against the ISTI All-Stars.

The ITSI All-Stars proved no match for the Fever, as they cruised to a 73-51 win, leading to the Fever earning a berth in the Platinum bracket.

Daum lit up the Texas team, shooting 12-for-16 from three-point range, as part of a dominant 38 point-performance, with several college coaches on hand to witness it.

Platinum bracket play did not go as well for the Fever, as they were defeated by the Seattle Rotary by a 47-70 final.

Daum saw few touches, ending the game with three points and nine rebounds. Reader finished with a personal-best eight points.

It is expected that Daum will likely take a few weeks off before beginning prep for his senior season at Kimball.
