Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Highlights were many for the Kimball High Track Team at the George Calvert Track and Field Meet held in Mitchell this past Friday afternoon with many athletes establishing new personal bests for the season, but top highlight was the record setting win in the girls’ 300 meter hurdles by sophomore Madison Biesecker as she kept her win streak alive with the record breaking time of 49.54, a personal best. She easily out ran the field with second place time by Brook Jamison of Hyannis timed in 51.08.
The hosting Mitchell teams won both the girls and boys division edging past Kimball in the girls’ team standings 117 to 99. The balance of the 13 school girls’ team race saw Sidney with 67, Bridgeport 54, Ley ton 51, Morrill 43, Banner County 33, Southeast 25, Hyannis 19, Sioux County 6, Minatare 6, Bayard 4, and Gering 2. (Bayard sent some athletes to Scottsbluff)
Kimball brought home gold in both hurdle races as Mikayla Fiehtner won the 100 meter hurdles in 18.36, a personal best. Ali Hunsaker did her thing again like Kimball coaches are accustomed to running 2nd in the 200 in 27.80, 2nd in the 400 in 1:03.73, and 2nd in the pole vault at 8’0”. Jannell Fiehtner ran 3rd in the 400 with her time of 1:04.65 and the sturdy young freshman has found her pet event. Coach Gene Mohr said “We need to get Jannell involved in another event or two to use more of her talents”. Brooke Hager was the best of Kimball’s sprinters on this day finishing 6th in the 100 meter dash with a personal best time of 14.12. Laura Flores got the Lady Longhorns points in the distance runs finishing 2nd in the 3200 in 13:06.30 and 4th in the 1600 in 6:10.45.
In other field events, Mikayla Fiehtner wound up 3rd in the high jump at 4’6”. Shelby Vogel had a personal best in the triple jump at 32’10” to claim 3rd place. Jessica Hanks improves every meet and her personal best throw in the discus event of 107’5” was good for 2nd place and the silver medal at Mitchell.
Some disappointment in the relay events as the Kimball 4 x 100 relay team, due to technical malfunction on the times turned in was placed in the running of the slow heat which they won by 40 yards or more, but their time ended up as the 3rd best overall finishing behind Morrill in 52.68, and Sidney in 52.83 while Kimball clocked 53.16 running uncontested. Team members were Shelby Vogel, Madison Biesecker, Brooke Hager, and Kelly Green.
The 4 x 400 relay team of Biesecker, Vogel, Hunsaker and Flores also ran 3rd in 4:26.66 while the 4 x 800 relay team improved their time once again with a personal best of 12:25.50. This team was made up of Olivia Ryschon, Taylor Muldoon, Kailey Dickerson, and Ivana Valle.
The Kimball boys finished 3rd in the team standings with Mitchell an easy winner with 188, Bridgeport runnerup with 71, Kimball 65, Minatare 37, Bayard 35, Southeast 28, Banner County 26, Hay Springs 22, Sidney 22, Morrill 17, Leyton 6, Sioux County 5, Hyannis 4, and Gering 1.
The Kimball boys struck gold in the 4 x 400 relay with Jon Withrow, Jake Reader, Angel Flores, and Ryan Muneio running a personal best time of 3:43.58. They just missed the gold in the 4 x 100 relay won by Mitchell in 46.12 with Kimball’s time of 46.25 just a step or two back leaving them in 2nd place. Reader, Withrow, Flores and Colton Stull teamed up on this silver medal unit. The 4 x 800 relay team beat out 3 teams to finish 6th in 10:04.60 with Colt Lewis, Brandon Barker, Enrigue Cajero, and Creg Barker taking turns with the baton.
An individual high light was Ryan Muneio’s personal best run of the season in the 400 meters finishing 2nd in 54.47. Jake Reader ran a personal best in the 100 meter dash clocked in 12.24 to place 5th. Angel Flores ran 4th in the 800 in 2:15.40. Justin Mohr ran a personal best in the 300 hurdles finishing 4th in 45.42. He was one place out of a medal in the 110 highs running 7th but Javier Figueroa ran 5th in 18.06.
A good showing in the field events by the Kimball boys. Colton Stull 2nd in the long jump at 18’5 1/2” and Jon Withrow less than 3 inches out of a place with his jump of 18’0”. Jaden Withrow 2nd in the triple jump as the freshman continues to out jump older athletes with his best Friday at 38’6 and 3/4”. Damien Rutledge with a personal best in finishing 4th in the shotput at 42’3 1/2”. Senior Dakota Jefferson sat out at Mitchell nursing a slight injury but Ethan Land came through with a 6th place in the high jump clearing 5’6”. Two places in the pole vault with Trent Rutledge 4th at 10’6” and Justin Mohr 6th at the same height and another personal best for Justin. Tyrus Gawith was 7th at 10’0”.
Coach Mohr said “We had a good day with lots of personal bests from our kids including several from kids who didn’t place but are still showing improvement. The coaching staff is enthused by the enthusiasm of the kids. We have athletes coming to us asking about trying other events. I think we are all having fun.”
At the time of this writing, no word had been received as to whether the Best of the West meet scheduled for this past Tuesday would go on as scheduled or postponed due to weather. The Longhorns are scheduled to take part in the SPVA conference meet in Grant tomorrow (Friday-May2) with a 12 noon start.
