Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
A busy weekend this past week for the Kimball High boys' golf team as they hit the links three consecutive days. It started this past Thursday when the Scottsbluff Tournament was moved back from the original scheduled date of April 28 because of weather, then on Friday, Kimball hosted the SPVA Conference tournament, and Saturday they were off to Gordon for the Western Trails Conference Tournament.
The weather, and the greens, were not favorable to shooting low scores at the Scottsbluff Country Club as it was still a bit windy and cool plus the greens had been aerated and sanded. The scores went up, but Henry Heeg was the best in Division II winning with a round of 85 and Jordan Greenwood finished 4th with a round of 89. Kimball had only four golfers as Michael Ferguson was home sick. Kyle Spicer shot 113 and Spencer Shields 120 with Kimball's team score at 407, second only to Mitchell with 384.
The Longhorns finished just 3 strokes out of a team win at the SPVA Conference Tournament they hosted on Friday with Chase County winning with 352 and Kimball runnerup with 355. Perkins County received the third place plague with their 392 team score. Another win for Henry Heeg as he took top medalist honors with his round of 74, just 2 over par. He blistered the front nine at 1 under shooting 34 but had a couple of bad holes on the back to shoot 40. Jordan Greenwood took 2nd place with his 77. Michael Ferguson was still feeling pretty bad but managed to get the 18 holes in and shot 99. Kyle Spicer was 105 to give Kimball their 355 team tally.
The van left Kimball at 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning headed for Gordon and the Western Trails Conference Tournament and Kimball finished 4th in the team standings with a team score of 386. At the time of this writing, I could not get the complete set of team scoring although I called and talked to the Gordon golf coach who said the info was e-mailed out to the school ADs Saturday afternoon. As of Tuesday, Ken Smith had not received anything. Bayard won the conference title followed by Mitchell, Bridgeport, Kimball, Gordon, Hemingford, and Morrill. Konvicka of Bayard was the individual conference champion with a round of 75. Kimball freshman Jordan Greenwood was 2nd in his first conference tourney with the WTC shooting a fine round of 79. Henry Heeg was 4th with 82, Michael Ferguson shot 103, Kyle Spicer 122, and Spencer Shields 133. The weather was a bit windy early but not too bad of a day for Western Nebraska.
Kimball was to host their Kimball Invitational today (Thursday) but with a bad weather reported Kimball officials have moved it back one day to Friday. This is the final tune up prior to the District Tournament which will also be hosted by Kimball at the Four Winds on Monday, May 19, with a 9 a.m. start time. The District Tournament will be a big undertaking with 14 schools coming to town to battle for spots in the State Tournament being held May 28-29 at Lincoln's Mahoney Golf Course.
