Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Kimball sent two golfers to the Nebraska Class C Boys' State Golf Tournament and Kimball's two golfers brought home two individual state medals! It was an awesome ending to senior Henry Heeg's Kimball high golf career as he tied for fifth place with his two day total of 75-74=149, and it was an awesome beginning for freshman Jordan Greenwood as he tied for 11th place with his rounds of 77-76=153! For both to score both days in the mid-seventies, and actually improve their scores on day two, shows tremendous maturity for both.
Heeg closed out a senior season where he was consistent each and every time out, shooting out of the 70s just twice the entire season, and despite shooting an 85 at the Scottsbluff Tournament, he still finished 1st. He won the district tournament with his low career round of 69 and he carried that momentum right into the state tournament held at the Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln. Next week we will recap the entire season for both of these young men.
Greenwood showed great poise for a freshman by simply qualifying for the state tournament, but then to play so solid both days, and to score in the mid-70s both days without ever carding a birdie, even in two practice rounds, means he was making a lot of pars. To say his future is bright is an understatement to say the least. His years of playing junior golf tournaments paid off, and he has plans to compete in several large tournaments this summer as he continues to work on his game. Heeg also will be keeping his game tuned as he will be moving into college golf after accepting an offer from College of the Canyons to join their golf program at the two year school located north of Los Angeles in Santa Clarita, California.
Four Winds Pro and Kimball High coach Chad Wise said he was very proud of the way both of his golfers performed at the state tournament. "They both did a good job. When they had some tough moments, they kept their composure and kept going and got the job done." Wise also said he would like to thank the parents and the fans who followed the team all season and gave their support. "It was really appreciated" he said.
Heeg said "It really feels good" in sitting back and re-living the best finish he has ever had in his four years of state tournament play. "It was a goal of mine to medal this final year and to accomplish it makes me feel so good" Heeg commented. Both Heeg and Greenwood kept their composure like coach Wise expressed and again, this is a sign of becoming complete golfers, not just long hitters. Henry also praised the play of his freshman team mate and noted "Jordan is going to be a really good golfer before it is all done".
Coach Wise also sends out an invitation to any young Kimball High students who might like to try the sport to get in contact with him. "We have Jordan coming back of course, and we have Michael Ferguson who will be a senior next year, and Kyle Spicer and Spencer Shields, both freshmen this season, returning, but we could use some more young men who would like to take up the sport," said Wise.
