Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Financial education courses begin Jan. 14-15 at Kimball library

What questions do you have about your budget, getting started with investments, or retirement planning? Kimball Public Library has resources to help you find answers with our books, DVDs and online resources.

The “Smart Investing @ your library® Builds Nebraska Communities” program is a free resource for the public. This is a unique opportunity provided by your library to offer a self-directed, personally paced program. The program is current, unbiased and confidential. It provides access to a world of information and answers for financial questions. After you sign up, you will receive a notebook of information and a flash drive to store your findings, encouragement from the University of Nebraska and support from the Nebraska Library Commission. No one involved will know your personal and private information.

The aim of this training is to help you make well-informed financial decisions for you and your families. This financial education effort is supported in part by a grant from “Smart Investing @ your library®,” a partnership between the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation. The information will cover getting out of debt, planning for retirement, and knowledge and resources on investing, and after retirement strategies.

Babysitting is available and there will be refreshments at each session. JoAnn McManus, from the Nebraska Library Commission, and Cynthia Gill, UNL Extension Educator, will present the information to start the program. Library staff is available for help in using the computers to access the materials at the library or at your home. The program (or lessons) is spread out over about four weeks. Then there will be a wrap-up program on Feb. 19.

The Smart Investing @ your library® Builds Nebraska Communities program is coordinated in Nebraska by the Nebraska Library Commission and the Northeast Library System.

The library encourages the public to take advantage of these free and unbiased resources offered in its upcoming financial education training. Kickoff sessions will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, and 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10. Anyone may attend either kickoff session. You do not have to attend both kickoff sessions.

Register in advance to reserve your materials by visiting the library to sign up, email [email protected], or call 308-235-4523. Participants who attend both the kickoff and wrap-up events and participate in the online curriculum will be eligible to win an iPod Shuffle.
