Kimball boys suffer trio of tough weekend losses

Three tough opponents coming off the Holiday break brought about three weekend losses for the Kimball High boy's basketball team.

It started on Thursday night with class B Sidney coming to Kimball and the tall and talented Red Raiders had no trouble picking up their 8th win with a 60-20 victory over the Longhorns. Another tall and talented Mitchell club came to town Friday night and won out 56-42 over Kimball, and the third straight loss came Saturday night on the road to Imperial to face yet another very strong Chase County Team that won over the Horns 52-29.

Sidney jumped out to a 15-2 lead at the quarter and was on top 35-8 at half time and coasted home for the win with 10 players scoring led by Jared Ross with 12 and Tyler Wintholz with 11. Kimball had 7 players in the scoring columns with no one in double figures. Colton Stull, Jon Withrow, and Michael Ferguson all had 4 points, Angel Flores 3, Enrique Cajero and Tyler Magninie 2 each and Ethan Land 1.

Kimball was out rebounded 46 to 17 by the taller Raider club with Trent Rutledge high rebounder for Kimball with 5. Kimball was 5/7 at the line, 7/45 from the field going 1/12 on 3 pointers, had 5 offensive and 12 defensive boards, 9 steals and 4 assists. They also had 10 fouls and 12 turnovers. Sidney had 8 fouls, were 8/11 at the line, 25/59 from the field including 2/15 on 3 point attempts.

The Horns matched up better with Mitchell and played with the visiting Tigers through the first 3 periods. The game was tied at 10-10 after one period and Mitchell held a 35-31 lead going into the final quarter of play where they out scored Kimball 21-11.

Kimball was lighting it up from long range hitting 9 treys on 26 attempts but they were only 4/27 on 2 point field goals and 7/14 at the foul line. They actually out rebounded the Tigers 27 to 26, had 11 steals, 8 assists and 1 block, 25 fouls, and 15, turnovers.

Big night for senior Jonathon Withrow who was high for Kimball with 15 going 4/6 on 3 point shots. He also pulled 5 rebounds, had 2 steals and 2 assists. Angel Flores was 3/4 on 3 point fie14 goals for 9 points. Ethan Land hit a trey and had 5 points, Michael Ferguson 5 points, Colton Stull 3 plus 4 steals and a block, Tyler Magninie 3 with a trey, and Trent Rutledge 2.

Mitchell was 16/39 from the field going 4/8 on 3 pointers, 20/35 at the foul line and had 16 fouls. They had 3 players in double figure scoring led by Antonio Barrios with 14, Alex Morales 13, and Joe Pieper 11. Colby Eberspecher had 9, Jaden Snyder 5, Creighton Reichert 3, and Chase Watson 1.

After a long road trip to Imperial on Saturday, and their third consecutive night on the hard woods, the Horns stayed close with the Longhorns of Chase County for a half, but the Imperial club is also boasting one of their better teams in years and they wore the weary visitors down in the second half.

Once again Kimball hit more 3 point fielders than 2 point field goals going 5 from long range and only 3 from inside the arc. They shot 8/18 at the line and had 10 fouls. Ferguson was high for Kimball with 8 points, Flores had 7 on a pair of treys and a free throw, Stull 4 with a trey, Land 4 with a trey, Magninie 3 with a trey, Rutledge 2, and Cajero 1.

Chase County had 17 fouls, 14 two point field goals, 6 treys, were 6/9 at the line. They were led by Dickey with 14, Luhrs 9, Fisher 9, with 9 players scoring as they improved their record to 7-2.

A pair of road trips this weekend for the Kimball boys as they are at Bridgeport Friday night to face yet another very tall and talented Bulldog team, and then back on the bus Saturday for a trip to Gordon. Make note that boys varsity game times are set for 7 p.m. Friday and an early 5:30 on Saturday. Kimball will be looking to get back on the winning trail and improve their 3-6 record to date.
