Lady Wildcats drop heartbreaker to South Platte

Banner County sliced and diced its way to an early lead through its transition game, but a fourth quarter comeback by South Platte left the Lady Wildcats heartbroken in a 33-31 loss on Friday.

Banner (2-14) led 29-19 with 6:38 left in the game when South Platte outscored the home team 14-2 for the comeback victory. The game was tied at 31-all with 3.3 seconds left when the Lady Blue Knights' Audrey Dickmander hit a pair of free throws that gave the visiting team the win. Banner got the ball with 0.7 seconds on the clock, but Courtney Knisley's shot got off after the buzzer and South Platte picked up the win.

Savannah Jordan and Knisley led Banner with eight points each.

South Platte (2-12) jumped out to a 5-0 first quarter lead, but that lead did not last long. Christina Grubbs hit a pair of foul shots to start the scoring, and then the Lady Wildcats' transition game kicked in. MaKenna Dahlgrin scored on a transition bucket from an in bounds play, followed by a Jordan fast break layup from an in bounds play that put Banner up 6-5. South Platte led 7-6 heading to the second quarter.

Banner jumped back on top 18 seconds into the second quarter as Knisley scored on yet another fast break bucket from an in bounds play, this time with an assist from Jordan, to take an 8-7 lead. Jordan hit a jumper on the break that put Banner up 10-9. The Lady Wildcats scored eight of their first 10 points in transition.

Baskets from Ashlynne Hanan and Knisley put Banner up 14-9 with 2:55 left until the break, and field goals from Hanan and Jordan gave the home team an 18-11 halftime advantage. After trailing 5-0, the Lady Wildcats outscored the Lady Knights 18-6 to end the half.

Banner led 22-13 on a Knisley jumper, and went up 26-15 on back-to-back Paige Cross layups for a 26-15 lead.

The Lady Wildcats led 26-19 heading into the final stanza. A Hanan foul shot extended the lead, followed with a Knisley jumper to give the home team a 29-19 advantage with 6:38 left. South Platte outscored Banner 14-2 in the final 6:30 of the game.

Sioux County 47, Banner County 26

Sioux County cemented its advantage in the second quarter in a 47-26 home win Saturday against Banner County.

Sioux (9-10) held a 15-8 first quarter lead and outscored Banner 9-0 in the second quarter.

Dahlgrin led the team with a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. Hanan also scored 10 points for the Lady Wildcats.
