Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
A team of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Gering Junior High School in Gering has won the regional finals of the MATHCOUNTS contest.
Students from Kimball Junior/Senior High School and Banner County High School also participated in the contest. Kimball students competing were Madison Wynne and Toby McManigal. Banner County students who competed were Lexie Jackson, Rylie Mason, Avery Wicker and Dylan Watson.
Members of the winning team from Gering are Brock Parker, Isaiah Henderson, Brandon Panattoni, and Derek Sabala. Mitchell Junior/Senior High School finished second, and team members include Jonathan Pieper, Kianna Island, Ian Carrier, and Kenna Krahulik. Both teams qualify for the state contest which will be held on March 21.
The top individual scorer was Jamie Chen of Bluffs Middle School. Second place finisher Brock Parker from Gering Jr. High. Chen, along with Jensen Curtiss of Alliance Middle School, Cameron Wood of St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, and Alethia Henderson of Gering Jr. High, also all qualify for the state competition as individuals.
Mitchell Junior/Senior High was awarded the most improved school.
Each school is allowed to field an official team of four mathletes to compete for team and individual honors. Up to six additional mathletes from the school can also participate on an individual basis.
MATHCOUNTS is a combination math coaching and competition program and is sponsored locally by the Western Nebraska Chapter of the Nebraska Society of Professional Engineers. It is designed to address the problem of poor math skills among U.S. students.
