Seay to give program on folk music at Friends of Library meeting

The Friends of the Kimball Library invite the public to come to the library at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, and enjoy a program by David Seay of Avoca, Nebraska.

The program David will present is the “Tradition” in Traditional Folk Music. This program examines how over the generations folk traditions of different cultures have merged to become our own traditions as immigrants have found their way to Nebraska. The presentation features demonstrations and stories of folk instruments such as harmonica, penny whistle, Indian flute, ocarina, pan pipes, yak horn, bugle, musical saw, banjo, singing bowl, and limbertoys (jointed wooden characters that dance to the beat). This show works for audiences of any age.

Combining his passions for music, history, and storytelling, David Seay has presented NHC Speakers Bureau programs since 1997. He is a master artist with the Nebraska Arts Council’s Artist-in-the-Schools Communities Residency Program and performs with his wife, Deborah Greenblatt, in the popular musical duo Greenblatt & Seay, which has participated in the Nebraska Arts Council’s Touring Program for more than 20 years.

David plays over a dozen instruments, teaches private music lessons, and conducts workshops in harmonica, songwriting, beginning folk dance, and hands-on-the instruments.

David will be bringing extra harmonicas with him and will teach anyone who is interested how to play them. Young people are encouraged to attend and learn about unusual instruments and limbertoys.

There is no charge for this program. Membership to the Friends of the Library is a big whooping $5 per year.
